I was just wondering if anyone else here is affected by Hurricane Rita. It's currently headed straight for me. Click the link below to see where I am at in relation to the hurricane's current path.

Just wondering if anyone else is caught up in it. They were showing on the news how the newscaster guy could walk faster than the flow of evacuating traffic. 1 mph vs. 3 mph walking. lol.

So far, our only plan is to drive 15 minutes or so away to the hospital for shelter. I can't bring my dog, a 6 year old golden retreiver. :( I'm so worried about him.

I hope whoever may be caught up in this stays safe. Catch ya'll after the hurricane.

*Sidenote* Hurricane Rita makes me think of Rita from Power Rangers.. remember? "Ahhhhh.. After 10,000 years I'm FREEEE... It's time to CONQUER earth!"

More like...

"Ahhhhh... after just a few weeks it's MEEEE... It's time to CONQUER Southeast Texas!"

or.. Make my prettyies groooow could be make my wiiiinds bloooow. Ok... that was lame.

anyway... lol.

Well, I'm not caught up in it myself, but I'm really hoping all of you on the Forum that are right in the middle of it get through this okay, and the same goes with those from other boards I'm on. At least you've got a sense of humor about it, which is good, even though mentioning Rita from Power Rangers just triggered a gag reflex in me. ;)

Luckily, I've never been in the middle of a Hurricane, Tornado, etc. so it's hard for me to sympathize. But it sounds like New Orleans won't be hit as badly as Texas.

Props to the Texas government for doing a better job than whoever was supposed to help with Katrina.

They actually are doing something smart for once.

Best wishes to you, your house, and your dog. Plus, best wishes to anyone else caught up in the storm.

My sister's over there. She's just waiting for it to be over.
My dad's advice to her: "Just don't follow the college jocks outside when they go to see what the weather is like outside during the huricane."

Where I live, we'll likely just get ... ahem ... taken-a-leak-on by Rita.

Not sure. But by the time it reaches as far inland as I am, it should just be a tropical storm and not a hurricane.

My thoughts go out to anyone who's about to feel Rita's wrath. :(

Man, it seems like we just get over one tragedy, and another one strikes.

That's the way the world works Didy. Quite unfortunate.

As for myself, I kinda don't have to worry about Hurricanes, being that I live in Central NY. Represent! I do feel sorry for you though PC, as well as anyone else that's being effected by this or any other Hurricane.

Hey isn't COLA down in that area, too? I think he said he is from Corpus Christi.

It took me 13 hours to drive from my house in the Houston area to get to my Grandmother's house in Austin, for safety. That's normally a 2 hours and 30 minuts drive, people. 13 HOURS! THIRTEEN! AAAARRRRGGGLBLBLBLBL!

I know. Sorry. That was in bad taste, but I just wanted to lighten the mood.

On the upside to this, Texas is a LOT more prepared due to Katrina, and I hope with all my heart that there are nowhere near as many casualties.

So a bus exploded on the way there.

A bus. With a couple of dozen people in it. Just caught fire in the middle of the street and blew up.

What else could go wrong?

It was full of evacuees from a nursing home. My guess is that the bus probably overheated, no doubt a result of sitting in all that traffic. When buses or most vehicles REALLY overheat, the engines CAN catch fire. Since it was full of elderly, there were probably oxygen cylinders. If those things get hot, not a lot of good things can happen. If someone was using oxygen, then it, no doubt encouraged the fire to burn a lot faster than it would have normally done (find a video of a cigarette dropped into pure oxygen to see what I mean)...
My girlfriend's dad and I talked about the bus fire about 10 minutes ago. My thinking, more or less, goes along the same lines as his the fire. He's a retired firefighter (Batallion Chief from Roseville, MI), so I feel pretty good about thinking along the same line as he was.
Buses catch fire a lot more often that you'd think. I think it's happened to the band Pinmonkey twice..

Looks like the levees in NO failed again... I suppose it should have been expected. The fixes that were done were only supposed to be temporary, not made to withstand an actual storm.
Thankfully, or at least hopefully, everyone is still out of town, so the flooding hitting the same area isn't really destroying anything.

Someone made the point that the areas in Texas likely to be affected are mostly evacuated as a result of people seeing what happened after Katrina. As bad as it was, it appears that Katrina has saved some lives. Hopefully the media will keep Katrina fresh on everyone's minds for a long time.

Yeah, well, at least you're safe, right? Plus, you hav internet access.
Being safe+internet access>Not being safe+internet access.
Seriously though, I'm glad you are safe.

My sister just went into the "emergency center" in the Cafeteria at Rice University.
