Now, I know not everyone can be a computer genius. Some people could put togeather an entire computer from scratch, but some don't know how turn one on, let alone make one. This thread is for those among us who may be closer to the latter, or even if you're not, because every one needs some help. If you're haveing computer troubles post here, and out of the goodness of their heart, someone may help you.

Lately my computer has been really slow. I mean REALLY slow. I've tried all the anti-virus software, and that helps a little, but my computer is X_X. Anybody know of a good free program to help this?

Have you tried Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy? Both are good about cleaning up spyware/malware/etc....

The biggest thing I can suggest is use a browser that doesn't allow active-x (something like firefox, mozilla, opera... anything other the internet exploder).

here are some links:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
http://www.opera.com/
http://www.mozilla.org/

Hope that helps some

My laptop copmuter is getting pretty old, about 4 years. The graphics card has expired, it's really slow, and the hard dive is nearing cappacity. And it's the best computer in the house. We're going to be getting a new computer this January when they go on sale, but were not sure what to get. Mac, or Windows? Laptop or Desktop? We have no idea. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Yeah, I've done all those. I've been using Firefox since before it was cool. I guess I'll just have to reformat again. Ugh, backing up files is a pain... I really want to get a nice Mac, but they're too expensive. I'll have to stick with this for a little longer, I guess...

For those with adware/spyware/malware, I reccomend using HijackThis and posting a logfile somewhere like here.

I like Linux, I really do, but it just doesn't support all of the programs I need. My laptop has Linux, and it works great for what I need it for, but when it comes down to it, it just doesn't work as well for me as a Mac would. Even though they are both based on UNIX.

It's a good thing that my computer isn't a Mac. There's no way I would understand it.

To anyone: Use Firefox. It's so much easier then IE.

Actually, Macs are more intuitive than PC's. So much more fluid and organized. It's awesome. I just need to scrape up the money for one.

I liked Firefox, but it's not compatable with Acid Planet. It won't let me download anything.

Most of you saw this coming from me, but, iMac G5 17". Fast, 80GB
Hard Drive out of the box(though I upgraded mine to 200GB and I still have 40GB left), widescreen.

And the whole right-clicking thing, Mac OS X is compatible with that and uses it quite well.

Yeah, I've noticed that before. I just switch back to my old IE for that. IE's okay, but you gotta coustomize!

Depends on what you want to do with it. I mean, if it's gaming you want, a desktop is the only way to go (a comparable laptop is usually magnitudes more expensive than a desktop). If it's portability you want, a lappy is the way to go.

If you plan on upgrading it at ANY time, a desktop is the only way to go. They are so much easier than lappys to work on.

If you're not planning on using it for any special purpose, I would stick to a windows box.. I know I'm going to get blasted by the anti-microsoft fanboys, but Microsoft's stuff is the most widely supported, and supports the most stuff you're likely to use. Granted, there are advantages to Mac and Linux, but your average user is probably going to be OK with Windows.

With that said, I'm thinking about getting a new desktop to go along with the new Lappy, and then converting my desktop into a Unix system. Mainly because I need a UNIX box to use some of the software packages for my classes.

True dat. I basically use my compy for homework, webtoons, and the Wiki. An average person will most likely use Windows because it is so simple. Although this means I'd use a laptop, but it's a family compy.

I suggest a desktop Windows. Especially if your entire family is going to use it. If it's just for you, go with a lappy Windows.

Mac. Laptop. Powerbook 17" with 1GB RAM. Love it to death.

Personally, I want a port of GNOME for OS X.

15" Dell Inspiron, 1.6 Ghz Pentium M, 768 megs of ram.. Not too bad..

Especially with the wireless. I'm loving me some wireless interwebbage!

If you get a laptop, get you some wireless and a good wireless router. Then, "secure" that thing. A good encryption and a good firewall will keep out most people who would otherwise get in. Granted, it's not entirely secure, but if you want your computer to be totally secure, unhook it and bury it 5 feet deep in concrete.

edit: I just measured, it's 15.5 inch diag. Granted, it's not a 17, or the 19 I have on my desktop, but still, it's nice and bright and works just fine for programming and web stuff.

Well, our compy is going to be basically for general use for my whole family. I mean, as long as I can play my games and use the internet, I'll be pretty fine. I've been considering getting a mac, but I don't know. I don't know about linux, mainly because my parrents have alot of trouble with the computer.

Linux is great, but not for people that aren't technically inclined. Or are without such a technically inclined person (such as myself) to set it up for them. After that it's pretty easy, if you limit them to the GUI.

If you decide on Linux, you might want to use Kubuntu or Mandriva. Anything with KDE is generally easier for the user than GNOME, although I personally prefer GNOME.

(Or, you can download Ubuntu then install KDE. Whatever floats your boat, man)

The only thing you have to remember about Linux/Unix is that a lot of the popular "family" type software is Windows only. Linux IS gaining ground, but I don't think it will ever be as widely supported by most general purpose "family" type software. Mac is similar. Microsoft stuff is far from the best, but you can do more with it. Funny isn't it?

Then get a Windows. It's the simplest operating system for the whole family. And, it can run all my games, so I think you'll be fine.

Wrong, with the Dock and Spotlight everything I do is extremely easy. Along with widgets, Mac OS X is the perfect mix of convenience and practicality.

I've noticed that lately, everything on windows media player, has not had sound. Now, that's the only thing with sound that's not working, I mean H*R toons, I can hear them fine. PC games, I can hear, and I know it's not the speakers, because they're up as loud as I can put them, and you can hear that little buzzing sound that happens when you have the speakers loud enough with nothing playing, you just can't hear anything on media player. Help, Please?

Try looking at the volume on media player.. OR Make sure that you haven't muted media player.. I turned media player down once, and it took me a while to figure it out.

It could be something more sinister, but before you go tearing down Windows, check the simple stuff.

I just tried the simple stuff, but it wasn't muted, and the volume was all the way up. What's wrong?
