Sarah, Plain and Tall. It was boring and dragged on too much.

That's about it.

I had to read that in third grade. Didn't it involve the characters standing in a cornfield for half the story?

It is a mathematically proven fact that any book first read in an English class will be considered a bad book, regardless of the a priori probability.

On my list of books that are generally considered "good books" but that I hate because I was forced to study them are Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird and Looking for Alibrandi - Couldn't stand any of them while we were studying them, but they've since grown on me... they're still not my favorites but I don't hate them with a passion like I used to.

Hmm, Looking for Alibrandi...never heard of that one. And yeah, studying books tends to suck all the soul out of 'em sometimes - I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence for recreational use, but I imagine if I had to write essays and fill out study guides on the dang thing I'd probably have to start burning some things down.

When I was in grade school, our teacher had us read The Hobbit. At first I hated it because it was assigned, but that was what actually sparked my love of LOTR.

I actually just read Of Mice and Men, and I read To Kill a Mockingbird last year. TKAM wasn't that bad, but it did kind of drag on.

And Of Mice and Men made me cry. :((

I actually thought To Kill A Mockingbird was excellent, as was Of Mice and Men.

BUT!!!

Huck Finn.

The book was a living nightmare. Absolutely horrible.

Tom Sawyer is a cruel little jerk, isn't he?

Oh how I sympathize. I had to read that book in either 4th or 5th grade, and then I had to watch the movie. The movie was worse than the book.

Ahhh, I disagree. To my recollection, Sarah, Plain and Tall was the only movie that was BETTER than the book.

HEATHEN!!!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest books EVER.

Not my favorite, but definitely on my top 100.

You must be insane or summat.

WOW. You just lost the very little respect I had left for you.

Well, YOU might have liked it, but I thought it was abysmal. And you have to admit that Tom Sawyer is evil. Look what he did to poor Jim!

Hey, he's not that bad. He taught me the joys of whitewashing fences!

FOP'd!!!

And last year just about everything I read in English was great. Catcher in the Rye is now my favorite book. I swear, Holden Caulfield's personality is IDENTICAL to mine.

My English teacher last year rocked. My English teacher this year rocks too. He's like, a former hippie, but still has the long hair. And the room is filled with all these rock posters, some schoolish ones, and a random Super Mario Bros. movie one. And like, a framed lion king poster.

I read Catcher in the Rye once, for fun, but didn't like it much. It's about a guy. Who goes around. And does...stuff. Meh.

I have to read it again. Obviously it was too deep for me at the time. ;)

And Tom Sawyer and/or Huck Finn is good readin'. Funnier than most "classic" books (I should read these again too, come of it...)

Yeah :P Just the other night my mom was ranting how JD Salinger (the author) should just give up and let people see all the other work he's being doing the past 20 or so years. He's a major recluse.

I read The Catcher in the Rye in grade 11 and didn't like it. I'd probably give it another chance if I could read it again, though.
