hey, does anyone else out here think that Christmas has become owned by the big corperations and that you are expected to buy theese several items like Trees, and lights, and lawn ornaments and big expensive toys and machines. what do you guys think? [Edit by InterruptorJones: Just fixing the spelling in the title so I don't have to look at "Corperate" anymore. ]

Absolutely. People fail to look beyond all the presents, shopping hassles, financial debt & commercialism & see the 2 real gifts that come from this season: God's love, & His Son. |

I think it's funny that people are so upset about students saying Merry Christmas to schools, and the like, but don't seem to have any problem fighting each other in the malls on the day after Thanksgiving. It would seem that, if Christmas bothered them THAT much, they wouldn't spend so much money. |

yes, gods love and his son...... but as for terms of what the Jehovas witnesses belive, we dont know what date Jesus christ was born on, they think that they just picked out the 25 of december because it was a cool date. to some, The three wise men arrived to where Jesus christ was born and met with the child. some just say they dont care. but what date is it really on? |

I asked a history prof that knew a lot about the Roman Empire if he could shed some light on that. According to him, the actual date was probably sometime in the spring, as the Roman tax season was around that time. Still, the date doesn't REALLY matter, it's not WHEN it happened, but WHAT happened that matters. |

December 25 wasn't a "Cool date"; the Romans chose it to coincide with Sol Invictus. Besides, does it matter which day we celebrate Christ's birth? What really matters is that we celebrate it in the first place. |

Thank you, Linus.
No, I do agree. When advertisements for gifts start four months before Christmas, it's officially gotten over-commercialized. It's always been commercialized, though. Just about everything done in this world is done for money. It's kinda sad when you think about it. EDIT: I read somewhere that Jesus was probably born in October. Don't remember where I heard that, though. |

Ya, The holidays are getting way to commercial. I mean like, if you look back to see when that Peanuts thing was made, apparently commercialism was bad back then. So, considering how much more superficial we are today, things must be horrible. |

Things are getting bad. They are making new Charlie brown X-Mas specials and Linus has a younger brother, and like...56 new cast memebrs. But hey, I still see the giving side of things, and I appreciate the Christams air, not only for gifts. |

You must not be very familiar with Peanuts, then, because Linus has had Rerun as a younger brother for a long time. I agree, though, it is getting too commercialized. I mean Christmas trees in June? That's WAY too freaking early. And they used to wait until December to start playing Christmas carols on the radio, now it's whenever they feel like it. But hey, yeah. |

No, Christmas was over-commercialized then too. That was kind of the point of it, that Charlie Brown was tired of all the commercialism. |

That was like, the bread and butter of what I said, it was a compariosn thing of like..."if it was bad then, it must be horrible now". |

Well, what I hate is that Christmas tree lights are always designed crappily, so that you'll always have to buy new ones. |

And THAT is why we cubans and other spanish speakers let chistmas be the spiritual holiday and 3 king day the commercial one, since nobody else celebrates 3 kings day anyway... |

I know what you mean. Back in the day, the lasted for AGES. There's a strand at home that we've used since I was 5 (read: before almost everyone on the forum was even BORN!) You'd be lucky to get a string to last 5 years now. You can save money on new ones, though, by getting them the day after christmas. If you wait a week (and they aren't sold out) you'll get them even cheaper. One year I bought 6 sets of 450 lights each for under 5 bucks. The only risk in waiting that long is that they are usually sold out. |

Huh. I'd heard he was born sometime in Spring. Yes, Christmas is way over commercialized. It gets blown so much out of proportion that it's kind of overwhelming. |

I look beyond the gifts, mostly in part to the disapointing Christmas(kitchen remodeling and whatnot). Christmas is another time when my family comes together(11 out of 12 of my fathers siblings come together on Christmas and all of my mothers family on Christmas Eve). Anyway, it seems that Christmas has been blown a bit out of proportion. |

Why is his name Rerun? 3. Who in the right mond would name there kid Rerun?(The Van Houten parents, obviously...) Also, that Jesus being born in Spring thing is pretty interesting... |

2. Why is his name Rerun? 3. Who in the right mond would name there kid Rerun?(The Van Houten parents, obviously...) 1. Closer to the end of the series, I assume. 2. Who knows? Why is one of Penny Arcade's characters named Tycho? 3. Once again, who knows? But interesting trivia here- one obscure character was named 5.

You're thinking of The Simpsons; Milhouse Van Houten. |

When he came to be in the Peanuts comic strip, Lucy referred to him as a "rerun" because of Linus having already been born. The name stuck. |
