I can't listen to that song anymore without thinking of that horrible Vanilla Ice song.

I think it's the other way around for me. For several years, I only knew that bassline from "Ice Ice Baby", but hearing "Under Pressure" enough times since while happily ignoring Ice has effectively erased that association. The fact that "Under Pressure" isn't based on the same groove and melody the entire time kinda helps too. :)

Another song I really like is Time Stand Still by Rush. It's a pretty cool song. It kind of makes me think of Ocarina of Time in some parts.

NOTE: Most of these will be by They Might Be Giants.

-"They'll Need A Crane" by They Might Be Giants. It's kinda sad, but it has all this awesome staccato and some great lyrics.

-"I've Got A Match" by TMBG. So sad, so beautiful.

-"The End Of The Tour" by TMBG. Another one that depresses me, but it's such a lovely song!

-"I Should Be Allowed To Think" by TMBG. More great lyrics, and even though the lyrics are kinda depressing, it has this wonderful, catchy, upbeat tune.

-"Cowtown" by TMBG. It's a funny little song, and it has some excellent lyrics.

-"Rhythm Section Want Ad" by TMBG. Just a great song.

-"Albuquerque" by Weird Al. Not really a song per se, but it's so much fun!

-"Your Horoscope For Today" by Weird Al. Just plain hilarious.

-"Existentialism On Prom Night" by Straylight Run. Just a beautiful song.

-"Mistakes We Knew We Were Making" by Straylight Run. A lovely song with some nice lyrics.

-"Polaris" by Jimmy Eat World. Another really pretty but sad one.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Bohemian Rhapsody. If ever there was a song that should be declared all-round best song ever, it should be that.

For those that haven't heard it in a while, allow me to refresh your memory - http://www.flashplayer.com/music/megama ... psody.html

Other great songs -

Waitress(extended/live) By Tori Amos
Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix
Money by Pink Floyd
Riders on the Storm by the Doors
Tank! by the Seatbelts
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater
The Figurehead by The Cure
Fade and Remain by Faith and the Muse
Mine Eyes by Switchblade Symphony
Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie
Sadness by Enigma
How Soon is Now by the Smiths
Teardrop by Massive Attack feat. Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser
Spiritual Fear by Rhea's Obsession
Soma by the Smashing Pumpkins
Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
New Born by Muse
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin
Paranoid Android by Radiohead
Pure Morning by Placebo
Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones
Hey Jude by the Beatles
Know your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine
Who Shot Mr. Midnight? by Bauhaus
Amphetamine logic by the Sisters of Mercy
Any song from the Cocteau Twins' Treasure album
To Live is to Die by Metallica
Walk by Pantera
Orchid by Opeth(all the tracks flow into one another so it's best to take the album as one long song)
Spiders by System of a Down
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhodes
Anarchy in the U.K. by the Sex Pistols
(Insert random Joy Division song here)

Sort of a mix between ones people will generally hold as best ever and ones I think are worthy of being in some kind of a top 100 list but don't get enough attention.

Good song's a good song, even if you've heard it too much. Just because I can't stomach Stairway or Canon in D anymore doesn't make them worse.

You're absolutely right about "Bohemian Rhapsody" - I could easily have put that on my own list, and it would at least make my top 50 (a collection of songs which, on any given day, would be my #1).

Almost every song on your list that I've heard (and there's only 6 or 7 of them I haven't) I hold in very high regard myself. So that probably means I should check the stuff I haven't heard out. Props for mentioning Dream Theater, Joy Division, and several other obvious classic songs in there.

This string is dead, but what the hell. Here's my opinion:
Turn Around, TMBG-Ah, morbid humor!
Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head, Gorillaz-Already mentioned, but one of the best songs...ever.
Absolutely Bill's Mood, TMBG-Perfect insanity Song
Cut the Strings, TMBG (as Demchuk)-Who doesn't like heavy metal physics?

I'd like to add Gorillaz' Sound Check(Gravity) as a bit of an afterthought. I'm not sure why but I think it's a really amazing song.

Also, A Perfect Circle's cover of John Lennon's Imagine is highly recommended, as is the original, obviously.

I edited it to add Amish Paradise.

Have you heard the original Gangsta's Paradise? Amish Paradise seems like an odd choice. I wouldn't exactly call it "Overwhelmingly cool" though I could understand the original one being that way. I loved the original song because it gave a kind of depth to a culture that seemed so empty.

Here's some more!
Become a Robot, TMBG-Polka weirdness
Come to think of it, the entire Demon Days album by Gorillaz.

Actually, the "original" is really Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise". The music is basically the same - the lyrics were just changed and made more rap-oriented. That's why it's hilarious to me that Coolio got offended by "Weird Al" parodying "his" song. I bet Stevie must be getting some nice royalties from both of them. ;)

I didn't actually know that. But I'm pretty sure Weird Al was parodying Coolio's version. I'll have to find Stevie Wonder's version.

I quite like the song he did that the Chili Peppers covered... Higher ground.

On the BoRhap thing: Yeah, well, Queen is kind of a given. You either like 'em or ya hate 'em, but I definitely like 'em, and just about everything they've done except for maybe "Seven Seas of Rhye" (sp?)

Best mainstream Queen song: I love "Killer Queen." It's kinda goofy, but I love it.

Best more weird Queen song: Either Invisible Man with its wicked cool synth hits (or, whatever you call that "WHOAMP!" sound) or "The Show Must Go On, which is dramatic, orchestral, and beautiful. I really like the cover that's in Moulin Rogue, too.

"Your Song!" How could I have ever forgotten? That song is so lovely. I sometimes cry listening to it. I suppose there's another song I wouldn't mind being serenaded to.

I hope you don't mind,
I hope you don't mind,
That I've put down in words...
How wonderful life is
Now you're in the world.

It's sad that I would list two Garth Brooks songs, but The Dance and Unanswered Prayers are on my list of "best songs".

Also on the list: Revolution by the Beatles (or, better yet, the cover by Blessid Union of Souls), Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (supposedly, it's a tribute to Dwayne Allman, which would make it double awesome), Turn the Page by Bob Segar, Amazing Grace (played remarkably well by Phanton Regiment), Dream On by Aerosmith, and My Way by Frank Sinatra (All you fellas gotta learn, ladies love some Blue Eyes)

On Elton John, I think I could easily have added "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" onto my all-time list. Everything about that song is just... wow.

"Your Song" is very beautiful and a classic, even though a couple of those lines jump out at me as hilariously awkward. Consider:

"If I was a sculptor, but then again, no"
"I sat on the roof, and kicked off the moss"

Moss on teh roof! LOL :)
