You rule for making this thread! Prog rock is very dear to my heart, especially the old school stuff like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Rush, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, etc. As a listener, it's always exciting to have a whole bunch of creative arrangement ideas and awesome musicianship come at you for long periods of time.

More modern prog is okay as well I guess, but apart from Dream Theater, I'm only casually interested in it. It just feels so much less vital.

Apart from them, I really like Queen. And as other people have said, Pink Floyd's a favourite of mine too, but doesn't even come close to Dream Theater. :mrgreen:

Does anyone like any? I love Dream Theater, I also quite like some of The Yes and Pink Floyd too. I wouldn't mind finding more. I guess Opeth count, sort of.

Not a big fan of some Prog Rock, but Rush is certainly a fave. Don't know if it's the prog rock thing so much as it is Neal Peart. THAT MAN IS A GENIUS! Someone mentioned Pink Floyd earlier. Dunno if they're prog or not, but, regardless, they rule. As for Dream Theater, I haven't heard a lot of their stuff, but people say I would like it. I downloaded some MP3's by them some time back. They were covering some Queen and some Pink Floyd. The sound a pretty pretty good.

Yeah, I like Progressive. Yes & Pink Floyd have got to be my favorites there. Though I still liked Pink Floyd when they were Psychedelic Rock too, I still love their Progressive work.

Yes, Pink Floyd, Coheed and Cambria ... mmm, progressive rock drool I STILL need the stupid Live 8 DVD just to see the rest of the Pink Floyd set (as well as the Killers and some other cool cats. Wasn't Green Day there? I was at work and didn't have the chance to really watch it).

i dunno what is considered progressive rock, but the only rock i ever didn't like was some of the really really old stuff... so i guess i'ma say yeah. i'm totally not picky about certain kinds of music

Rush is the greatest band ever. No foolin'. Pink Floyd is awesome. As is ELP and Dream Theatre.

Never liked Rush very much. I hear the talent, but just can't get into the music. The deepest I ever got into Progressive Rock is Pink Floyd. And maybe by stretching the definition, could I also put Tool in that category? I never really figured out what genre they belong in. But I guess I don't care either.

I love prog rock of all - well, most - stripes. Yes, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, as well as shedloads of not-particularly-well-known European acts (particularly from Germany, where much of the most radical stuff got grouped together under the vague "Krautrock" umbrella). Then there's more recent stuff starting, ironically enough, with post-punk and moving up to groups like Godspeed You Black Emperor and The Mars Volta. I much prefer the more radical 80s-onward stuff to crap like Neoprog, which is basically just a lot of bands picking up on clichés from old Yes and Genesis albums and repeating them as a style instead of, y'know, actually progressing Don't really like Dream Theater either, sorry

Two of my friends love Rush and Dream Theater, so whenever I'm in the car with either one of them, it's all I listen too. Not that I'm complaining though...

I've mentioned a few times that Dream Theater is my favourite band. I'm not too much into older progressive rock, but I haven't really listened to a lot of it either. I suppose what I like is classifed as progressive metal, bands like Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Symphony X, and Ayreon.

The most I've gotten into progressive rock is Tool. I don't reallt listen to a whole lot of progressive rock.

Progessive music is one that goes against the verse chorus verse structure, and both changes and builds up every few minutes. Songs are often quite long. They generally have lots of soloing on both guitar and keyboard, and usually have some of the most talented and famous keyboardists(Rick Wakeman from the Yes, several including Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater). Concept albums are very common in prog rock. Songs often also bleed together. There are some progressive songs that don't count as "Prog Rock", One by Metallica, and All Along the Watchtower.
