Being relatively new to this forum I'm not quite sure how old all of you are, but how many of you are seniors? Or have had to deal with the evil organization called the college board, the long common application, go through financial records to help pay for college, and get letters back saying in fact, you can attend and afford the school of your choice... and so on.

So far out of eight schools I've applied to I've only heard back from one of my safeties (SUNY: New Paltz) and I got in. :D I'm glad I'm going somewhere, but I'd much rather go to Skidmore College or Hampshire College, but I don't get results back from most of my colleges until early April. (also applied to SUNY: Binghamton, Drew University, The College of New Jersey, Tufts University, and Swarthmore College.)

I doubt I'm alone. :D

I am a Sophmore in college, I go to Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. If you live in New York, go to a SUNY school, you'll get a great education at a nice price.

Right now I am looking to transfer to either SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Oswego or Syracuse University.

I've tried to avoid the topic of college as much as I possibly can.

Thank you oh so much for bringing it up.

...

(I'm a junior in high school, and I've looked at two schools so far. The University of Arts in Pennsylvania (where I REALLY want to go), and the Colorado State University here in the city (where my mom REALLY wants me to go)).

I tried to avoid the topic of college in a frickin' magnet school. Try that. I didn't finish my applications until I realized that half of my school applied early for some [censor'd] schools. A friend of mine got into MIT with a personal note on his admissions letter D: One tip: if you're applying to a college that requires reccomendations, get those sorted out by the end of junior year. Waiting until senior year was a huuuuge mistake for that.

I'm from New Jersey but none of the New Jersey schools really do much for me. Rutgers is mehhhh, TCNJ was way too happy, Montclair isn't a great school. I want to go out of state, probably to Massachusetts or New York, far enough to live away but close enough to visit once or twice a month.

I never really had to do all that many applications. I just but mine into Onondaga Community College, along with BTG. I'm just there for my Associates for Criminal Justice, then going into the Police Academy. I never had to worry about getting accepted, because most people that apply there will get in.

I can go here for free.

Then I'll probably hit up the University of Virginia for grad school.

I'm dealing. I still have to take my SATs. (I've got the April 1st test lined up. That's an ominous date for an exam...) I'm probably going to Northern Arizona University. I already visited it last week.

Hey Teff, I could have gone here or here for free if I wanted. So don't get too high on yourself.

My sister's going through it now (graduating in June (!)) and I find myself rather wanting to avoid it when the time comes starting next year.

I got my PSAT scores last week; 202 out of 240! In September I'll find out if that score was high enough for me to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Competition...

I'm a junior now, but I've been looking at colleges since my freshman year:

Metro State College of Denver (My dad's alma mater; they have a fairly open admission policy)
Colorado Christian University (Too bad they don't have a theatre program.)
Unversity of Denver
Regis University
University of Colorado-Denver (Even though CU Boulder abolished drinking from their campus, they're still a freakin' huge party school.)
Cal State Fullerton (My mom's alma mater)

I'm going to fill out the FAFSA as well as apply for some grants & the College Opportunity Fund created by the CO state legislature.

Good luck to all you applicants! :)

You DO know that place isn't real, right?

So, aside from applying to real schools, what can I tell you.

Best advice I can give you all is to apply for EVERY form of financial aid you can. Apply early and often. Have your parents do their taxes ASAP so you can get your FAFSA (or is it FASFA? I don't remember) in soon. Most states have their financial aid decided well in advance of the June deadline for that thing. Try to mail in the FAFSA in the first week of Februrary if you can. Don't stop once you've applied for enough aid to cover you. If you can get grants and scholarships, take them!
Most importantly, save the loans til last (in terms of paying for school). If you're getting grants and scholarships (basically free money), why take money you have to pay back?

I have 1 loan right now, and I am paying a little on it as I can afford to do so (I still have about a year and a half left of grad school, so the loan won't actually have to be paid back until I graduate).

I could've gone to Yale, or Oxford, or one of those big-name schools, with my SAT scores... but instead I chose to take a Media program at the local college. Guh.

I haven't applied anywhere this year, because I'm most likely going to work for a year, but after that, I'm planning on going to Capenrae (a Bible college in San Antonio).

I left my college applications until the last minute, but I still got into my first choice. :eekdance: It is a liberal arts program though, so they accept nearly everyone.

I got to visit and/or visit with representatives from a bunch of schools, but when it came down to it, I just picked my favorite (that I could afford) and only applied there.

In an ideal world, I would have loved to go to the university of pennsylvania, but for any of the ivy leagues, it is required that your parents pay for some of your tuition. That was a no go for me, as I had to pick somewhere where I could pay for it all myself.

But in the end, Utah State was the perfect place for me to go.

Go Aggies!

Edit: Ian, good luck with that NMSC thing. It totally makes getting scholarships most anywhere a piece of cake.

I conveniently live a 10-minute drive from Yale. Yes really.

Hmm. I was a senior last year. Currently, I'm attending Temple University on both a.) scholarship and b.) tuition remission. I don't pay a dime aside from books, but my job SUCKS so that totally eats into my pocket.

Heh, just gotta keep my gardes up. Last semester, I lived at the dorms and it totally freaked me out. Homescikness in the form of depression. Ooof. Not fun. I wouldn't reccommend dorming it your first semester.

I also got full scholarships to La Salles University, Holy Family University and Arcadia University, but chose Temple because my siblings all went there as well. Nyaha ^^

Who cares if it's an Ivy or not? you're going to get a good education virtually wherever you go (sure, some places may be better than others, but it's still college) and what really matters is if you're happy for however many years you attend. If you're not happy with college, I have nothing against you. I know people who might think you're an idiot for doing so, but that's okay in my book.

I wouldn't be happy at an Ivy League. If I had actually worked, studied for my SATs, and didn't have the problem of undiagnosed ADHD until the middle of high school, I might've been able to get into an Ivy League. But I don't have the disposition for it. I know that. I want to go to a really tiny artsy little school where I can take whatever classes and courses I want with less pressure. I'm not sure what I want to do with my life, but I like to learn. And it's an institution of higher education, after all.

As for living away, all of the colleges I've applied to are far enough to live away and two to five hours from my home. I personally love the northeast, the weather, many of the people, and the coastline, the cities... so I'm staying in this general area. But what has factored into my college decision process lately is how will I acclimate to a new environment? The thing is, if I go to Hampshire, I'd know plenty of people in the area (a friend of mine got into Smith college early decision and I know a bunch of other people applying to colleges in the Five College Consortium). If I go to Skidmore in Saratoga, I'd probably be nearly alone in going there from my school, but I think the school fits me better.

Whatever. Carry on with the discussion!

University of Utah here. Presidential Scholarship. (Sadly, this required me to keep a fricking 3.7 GPA). In high school, I had a 3.85ish, usually all A's with an A- or maybe 2. Then I get to college, suddenly things got tough again. Calculus, Chemistry, Physics... all tough courses. Needless to say, I was on probabation after my first semester, and I lost the scholarship after the second.

Now I apply for FAFSA, and pay for everything with grants and student loans.

Thankfully, this is my last semester.

I had the Presidential Scholarship as well, and the GPA requirement was a big reason why I picked USU. They only made me keep a 3.5. Like you said, U of U wanted a 3.7 and BYU required a 3.85 to keep it.

I kept mine the whole time, but there was one semester where I did badly enough that I dropped my overall to a 3.52. I never would have kept mine at the U of U though.

I thought I'd bump this rather than starting a new thread.

So, it's the summer between my junior and senior years of high school, and I've been spending it traveling around the northeast looking at colleges. So far I've seen Cornell, Bucknell University, and the University of Scranton, but I'm going to check out Villanova and possibly Georgetown soon.

I'm really leaning toward Cornell right now. Anyone else looking at colleges?

I gotta start looking. I should start applying for scholarships and such. I got instate univerity tuition taken care of, So i'll probably just go to the University of Arizona. But I'ma apply to MIT, Caltech, possibly Stanford. Just to see what happens.

I am so amazingly glad that this process is over for me. I shocked my friends by only applying to two schools (our school heavily emphasises three, at the very least), getting into both of them, and turning down the big name state university and honors program in favor of the tiny private Christian college in the far north of PA. It was secretly my #1 choice the whole time ;)

Ah, but the catch is that now I'm in college I've got to pay for college, so that means applying my backside off of every scholarship I can get my hands on. Fun times, asking for money.

Depending on what you want to do with life, the tiny, private school is a lot better. If you're going into any sciencey type stuff, the Big Name State university will be a lot better for you, as they typically get more funding to to cool stuff.
As for paying for school, I highly urge you to apply for EVERYTHING you're qualified to recieve. Remember, even though they don't seem like much, those little $200 grants and scholarships can add up.

I'm approaching my senior year, so the barrage of applications is gonna be interesting. I think I'm gonna stay in-state, so I can get lower tuition that way. Besides, I love Colorado.

So I got a 1900 on my SAT (680 Writing, 630 Reading, 590 Math) & a 27 Composite (30 Reading, 31 English, 22 Math, 25 Science) on my ACT this past spring. Pretty good, but not astoundingly amazing. Still, I'm happy with 'em, so I'm not going to take them over.

With my 3.2 GPA, I can get into a few decent Colorado schools, but at some places I'll have to audition to get into the theatre program. If I don't go into theatre, I'll probably do graphic design or something like that.
