I really detested shows like "Extreme Makeover" or "The Swan" where they take mediocre people and make them beautiful with cosmetic surgery (sp). That is what's wrong with the world. Be happy with who you are, or fix it yourself. Eating right, exercising, that sort of thing. You can't change what God gave you, but you can at least make the best of it. I can understand plastic surgery (sp) if you were born with some disfiguring feature. But for vain purposes, I can't respect that.
As the popular Homestar Runner quote goes: Yes. Very yes.
I remember the commercials. They really made me angry. There are enough women that feel insecure over their looks and shows like that make things a whole lot worse. What kind of message is it to say, "Why live with your body when you can become skinny, pretty, phony and perfect?" But these messages were around long before The Swan. I could get into my frustration over turning on the TV and everyday seeing the latest diet commercials. I could get into my anger toward the music industry for the focus it places on looks rather than talent. I could get into these things, but I'd be getting off topic and would probably sound like an obsessive feminist.
Anyway, since it took me a minute to actually remember what The Swan was, it's pretty safe to say that it's dead and gone. That being said:
Moving on, I'm quite shocked that reality shows are still profitable. How much old ground has been treaded on, dug up, and made into a grave for originality and creativity? I hear the new season of Survivor is different somehow and it would be a little unfair to make accusations about a show I honestly know nothing about, so I'll leave it alone.
American Idol. Why is this still being aired? Who among the winners has any amount of attention in the music industry? I know for some reason, people can't get enough of Kelly Clarkson. I'm sure the reason for that would be revealed by a simple Google search without filters. It's sad, she really does have a good voice, but it's wasted so much. One of her latest videos, whichever one it is that she's basically making out with herself, proves that point. But, I digress. Simon... Oh, Simon, what a life you must have. You've become such a popular figure merely by spitting out insults. You know what they call people like you in school? Troubled. A bully. It kills me that people think he's so funny. I think he's bitter, but it's more likely that he's portraying the character written by the same people that control Kelly Clarkson's career, therefore losing what little respect he may, unlikely as it is, have earned.
After reading over my last few sentences, I don't sound much better. I admit it.
Another thing about reality shows:
Everyone can fit into one, usually more, of the following categories:
Slut
Bimbo
Gay
Bitter
Egomaniac
Pretty-boy
Athlete
British host
Boring, non-British host
I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting. I should mention, though, that I have nothing against homosexuality, but it's portrayed in such a stereotypical way on TV.
I'm done venting for now.
