Does any1 here listen to rap or hip-hop. cuz i haven't met a person that does here.

Toastpaint. I don't listen to much rap or hip-hop because it's not a style that appeals to me, just like the music from Grease is not a style that appeals to me. It's highly unfair, however, to judge that all rap and hip-hop is only about swearing or for people trying to be cool, just like it's unfair to say that it's all about promoting gang activity and teenage premarital sex and drug usage. Are there examples of that out there in rap and hip-hop? Yes. Does that mean that ALL rap and hip-hop are like that? Of course not. MC Hammer may be washed up, but he's still rap, and his messages were only positive (and rather Christian-inspired, I might add). I've heard such positive rap in today's music scene as well, so don't think that it's all negative.

What I dislike most in music is the trend in much of today's pop music that promotes shallow materialism. I like classic rock much more than modern pop. Why? Because more people back then were creating music for the sake of music--not for the sake of profit and fame.

I only listen to guys who convey a message in their songs. I listen to guys like Jay-Z, NWA, Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, The Sugarhill Gang and Eminem. You guys are stereotyping every rapper out there, stereotypes are bad.

You know, I like all of them except Eminem. He is just a phoney. He tries to talk about his family and all to seem like he's from the hood or something. I would hate to be his daughter, being in every song.

Rap is alright, but, if you see them on MTV or BET, chances are they suck.

I can't stand the current trend in Hip-Pop (what I call BET/MTV rap), it seems like anymore all the "artists" do is talk about how much money they have and how big their car is and stuff.

The good old days were so much better. Sugar Hill Gang, NWA, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Beastie Boys (the original, and only true, hip hop honkeys), etc. were artists.

I don't like Eminem. This whole "I act all bad and hang with people that pull an unloaded gun on ICP"
He's like Marilyn Manson to me, he just says things that he knows will shock people and make disaffected youth buy their albums.

My taste in rap/hip hop is kinda limited and mostly old school, much like Coach Z. I particularly like what I've heard from OutKast (though a lot of The Love Below is barely rap at all) Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, and some Run DMC. It's hardly the center of my musical taste, but every once in awhile it's fun to listen to.

Can we help it? No. The media only pushes rappers who claim to be "Gangsta", such as 50 Cent, he made a movie and a game about his life in the "hood" which are probably fake. And if you watch the music videos early in the morning on MTV (yes, MTV still plays music), all you will see is some guy rapping in the "hood" surrounded by women.

How can you not like Grease songs? Especially with awesome lyrics like...

"A-wop bam boo do bop a wop bam boo!"

But seriously, I don't like too much Hip-Hop. There's some stuff from the early 90's I can listen to, but stuff like 50 cent and G-unit and all that stuff is annoying, it all sounds like the same thing, over and over and over again.

Melody is an essential component of music. And rap and hip-hop prove it.

But old-school hip-hop is pretty good. Just ask Coach Z. I seriously doubt that guy would listen to the new stuff if his life depended on it.

You can't spell "crap" without rap. Sadly, most of hip-hop & rap today is materialistic and shallow; not everyone in the hood wears bling, drinks Cristal, & parties with chicks until the place goes up in flames.

Sadly there is very little truly "positive" hip-hop out there. Back in the day, you had Arrested Development, Queen Latifah, and Digable Planets, among others. Today, you have Gorillaz, Black-Eyed Peas, Matisyahu, and The Roots, but what also sets them apart is their unique sounds & production. In the Christian music world, there are some truly great hip-hop artists, such as GRITS and KJ-52, plus rap-rock groups like Thousand Foot Krutch.

But that's just the opinion of a white dude from Denver.

That's really insulting... calling RHCP something with rap blended into it.. :p

I always thought of them as a funk based band. Whatever you call them they're good.


As for hip-hop groups I can stand, I kinda like Nappy Roots. They're a little more positive than other groups out there today. Of course, since they're not all "I shot him in the head made him wonder why he's dead. yeah yeah yeah." or "I got 20's on my doorknobs" few people have ever heard of them.

Much like the Gorrillaz, much/most of their famous songs feature rapping even though most of their music isn't actually like that(the Chilis).

Gorillaz didnt' even technically had a rapper. They sort of had Del as the secret 5th member, but with his new album it's all guest stuff, I believe.

If you mean Demon Days, then you are absolutely right. I think there's one song on there that doesn't have someone doing it with them. Really.

I listen to quite a bit of hip hop and rap. But then again, I listen to a lot of top 40, and its all in there.

It's not all bad. I mostly enjoy the beat, and not so much the lyrics.

Basically, I don't like gangsta rap, as it's the most prevalent today. It wouldn't surprise me, however, to learn that old-schol rap isn't so bad. At which point we'd be getting into issues of (for example) I don't like the messages - i.e. "omgz i grew up in the hood and it sucked" - as I did not, in fact, grow up in the hood.

I like very little rap. It mostly consist of this young talented rapper named "Coach Z".
