Oh, ok...Ya, I've played games like that, not many though. I never really liked Doom and that's the only game I;ve ever seen in abundence.

That would be Spear of Destiny.
I think that was my first FPS.
You shot Nazi's and demons and I think the final bad guys were Hitler and Satan.

Um.. no, that's not correct. "2.5D" just means it looks 3D but isn't true 3D. As usual, Wikipedia knows. Doom, for example, is 2.5D because sectors can't be placed on top of eachother (i.e. you can't have a two-story building in Doom). Quake was one of the first true 3D games.

Actually, if it were true 2.5D, then that would be impossible. You can do some hacks, like in Duke Nukem 3D, but it's still not true 3D.

I've played all the major ones, like Doom and Doom 2. Wolfenstien 3D was a good one, too.

Yeah, in Duke Nukem 3D you could stack sectors but only if one wasn't visible from the other (you'd get a Hall of Mirrors effect otherwise). Basically, it's like this: If you can make a solid bridge (i.e. not out of sprites like in Rise of the Triad) that you can pass under, you've got true 3D. Otherwise you've got 2.5D.

Concerning Marathon, to quote Wikipedia: "True bridges or overhanging platforms are impossible in the Marathon engine, and maps must be planned accordingly." That makes it 2.5D, though from the sounds of it Bungie was able to do some sector-stacking similar to DN3D.

there is a way that you can make a bridge to go under and see into in the map creator forge. and there was a few levels in m2 and mInfinity with stuff like that. i never said it was actually 3d though

I've never played one of those games before. I don't play a lot of computer games.

I've played Dark Forces; It's like a prequel to the Jedi Knight games.

I've also played Descent and the original Half-life, if they count.

Well, most of them use polygons for map geometry, but most of them don't use polygons for sprites. I'm not sure whether or not tile-based games like Wolfenstein 3D used polygons or something simpler for map geometry.

There's no such thing as a 2.5D game. That's just stupid.
Just becasue it used software rendering instead of hardware rendering doesn't mean that it used 0.5 of a dimention.... something that's imposible, by the way.

What you're talking about is a 2-dimensional map with height information which is then rendered to 3D. The final rendering is three-dimentional, but the basic information isn't. In other words, walls don't have thickness, monsters are paper dolls that move, bullets are one-dimentional, etc.

Belive it or not, there was a time when the video card didn't have a procesor on it. It didn't have much more than a megabyte of ram, and there was no such thing as a vertex or a texture or a bumpmap. All it did was act as a video adapter and maybey a VESA decoder. (Video Electronics Suppliers Association, and industry group active in the let 80's, early 90's, now defunct. Not to be confused with the comercial electronics name brand that uses the name "VESA")

Everything before Wolfenstein was not a FPS. Period.
Wolfenstein used sprites, so did Doom. However, Doom used texture-maped sprites while Wolfenstein used no texture maps.
Quake was the first comercial game to use polygons in a 3D FPS. Quake was the first 3D game that really neede a hardware accelerator card (what we now just call a video card) to run properly, but it still could run in software rendered mode.

I've played all of the first 3 Quake games. (my computer can't handle Quake 4...)
