Being a Washintonian, I come across this argument alot. I would like to get other people's opinions on this, so that I could tell everyone the truth.

MY OPINION: 100% Pearl Jam. Why? Consider the Wayne's World-esque song structure of songs like "In Bloom" versus the beauty and avant-garde creation called "Yellow Ledbetter". Evidence...

While both are great bands, Nirvana is the better of thw two in my opinion. Nirvana was the band that put the nail in the coffin of hair bands and made it possible for bands like Green Day, STP, and others to make it.

Nirvana. Nirvana was the reason Pearl Jam had a career.

Nirvana. They're one of the only bands of their genre that I have heard of/like.

That's because there are only five grunge bands. And Mudhoney isn't reallly grunge at all.

As for the question? Soundgarden.

Yellow Ledbetter.

The only song I've run across that purports to be in English, yet is entirely undecipherable by me.

:)

I like Nirvana better. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a great song

Okay. I am a hardcore, hardcore Pearl Jam fan. So clearly Pearl Jam is better than Nirvana. Also.....BTG....I'm going to have to kick your butt, in regards to your above statement. :P

Pearl Jam is wicked awesome.

Betterman...come one....best song in the world. The end.
Yellow Ledbetter? You can't make out half the words, and it's still rockin.
The rest....just supremely great.

I'm biased. So shoot me.

Until very recently, I would have said Pearl Jam easily, but now the gap between the two is somewhat less in my mind. Now that the hype has died down a bit, I've come to appreciate Nirvana's contribution to music and Kurt's songwriting talent a lot more - maybe it helped suffering through their hopelessly lame imitators a few years down the road. Plus, I've come to realize that while Pearl Jam's first two albums were awesome, a lot of their stuff afterwards leaves a bit to be desired to me.

Alice In Chains are still my fave of the 'big four Seattle bands', though.

Alright, Yellow Ledbetter lyrics
"Unsealed, on the porch a letter sat..."
Go look em up...
BTW, Nirvana is CATCHY, but i LOVE hair metal, and HATE WITH THE PASSION OF A THOUSAND SUNS THE MUSIC OF GREEN DAY!
Anyway...
Just look at the notation...Pearl Jam is SOOOO much more impressive musically, and vedder has a musical style all his own, and ANYONE can scream like Cobain (who was murdered by his wife).

Nirvana, simply because I don't know anything about Pearl Jam except that they are great. And I actually own some Nirvana stuff.

You = teh rock.

Seriosly, if I had the money, I'd buy everything Nirvana related. Even H* has dressed up as Kurt Cobain. Need I say more?

Eddy Vedder's voice gets boring after a while, he makes no effort to change the sound from song to song.

Victory goes to Nirvana

I got into Nirvana in my, "OMG NIRVANA IM SO HARDCORE" phase, but picked up Nevermind recently, and even got past the first song!

So, Nirvana.

I'll go with Pearl Jam only because it led Wierd Al to write 'My baby's in love with Eddie Vedder', one of the few songs I can play on the harmonica.

And with that, he dissapeared into the night leaving behind nothing more than another pointless comment in a thread! -Krazed Squirell

Ya, it's hard to not have a bit of a grudge for that, but Nirvana is so...good it can slide.

grudge? GRUDGE?

I love Nirvana for that. Hair metal woulda been ok if they all hadn't tried to do ballads. I mean, look what Damn Yankees did to Ted Nugent! He hasn't been right since (ok, so he wasn't right before that either  )

If I had to pick between the two, I would pick Pearl Jam. I like most of their songs.
Yellow Ledbetter is great. Vedder mumbles through and nobody knows the words! You can be completely thrashed and mumble in rhythm and people think you're singing the song. I'm kinda suprised Scott Stapp hasn't tried that song.

Blasphemy! all nirvana and grunge bands are all just EMOs! all singing about how they hate their parents, how their life sucks, how their girlfriends left them, how they need to buy milk, and everything that you hear most people whining about. they killed rock and roll for ever! from that came freaking political Punk bands like System of a Down, which ruined it all for everyone!

I think your definition of "emo" varies slightly from mine...

I don't know how people compare Nirvana and Peal Jam these days. Pearl Jam has taken "seattle grunge" to levels that I am not even sure that Nirvana could have done (with or most certainly without cobain). But that isn't to say that nirvana is/wasn't great.

Nevermind was one of my, so to say, coming of age albums. I listened to the tracks on it over and over and over again when I was a early-mid teen. But now that I am a little older, I don't find myself listening to those same albums nearly as much.

As for Pearl Jam not changing, you only need to compare tracks off of their early 90's albums to tracks off their most recent album to know that there is no truth to that statement. That's part of what makes Pearl Jam so great. Everytime the media thinks they have a handle on them, they go and mix up their style a little (and all the little fanboy bands have to rework their sound to try and compare).

So to answer the original posters question... I am going to have to go with Nine Inch Nails :)

Hey, Grunge fashion was cool. I liked it. For a while, it was interesting to see preps dress like lumberjacks.

I dressed the grunge part for a little while, It woulda worked a lot better if I woulda had the hair I have now. Oh well.

Nirvana.....emo? Whatever you're drinking, you should put it down. Much of Nirvana's songs made little sense. The lyrics in some songs seem to come from no where. But that's what made Nirvana great. Does talking about going to your Grandparents house make you emo? Because, if anything, it's just kinda weird.

But once Grunge had it's run in the light rock had no where to go and began to turn into the crap we see today.
