They make you go to the gym to bring out your school spirit while a bunch of athletes run around and pretend to smile when they'd really be anywhere but there. I'm gonna ditch one of those some day. I could've ditched the Pep Rally of Disaster on Friday. |: My mom works at the school, I could've just hung out in her office. I think they should sell tickets to pep rallies for upwards of $5 - that way only the ones that really want to go will go, since the ones that don't want to go won't buy a ticket and the ones that want to go just to get out of class probably won't throw away $6-10 just to get out of one or two periods, tops. Plus, this makes the athletic department a little money. |

Before they knocked it down and built a new one, my school had a completely annoying library rule. The library connected two dead-end halls, and was large enough to contain four or five rows of computers, several shelves of books, a bunch of tables and chairs, a huge front desk, a giant 9/11 memorial poster, a couple of meeting rooms, two special ed classes, and a Spanish class. It never got congested, ever. Now, there were two double doors on one side of the library that connected to "Hall 3", and one double door on the other side that connected to "Hall 2". Should be a simple shortcut, right? Wrong. We were only ever allowed to use one of the Hall 3 doors, specifically the one farthest from the end of the hall and farthest from the Spanish class. If we tried to go through the other Hall 3 door, or through the Hall 2 door, they made you come back in and wrote you a referral. No explanation was ever given. Other than that, though, our faculty is and was pretty laid-back... Edit: Pep rallies eh? I personally enjoy them, even though we get "banned from ever having them again" about every other time we have one. Two pep rallies ago half the school booed our awful football team as the ran out, so at our last one the coach came on the PA beforehand and talked for ten minutes about how six high-school football players died because of the heat during practice last year and how we were all negative nancies or something. I love our school. |

I think illicit drugs were involved, personally, since the principal does not sacrifice class time for anything. Anyway. The administration seemed surprised when things got out of hand and tried to punish individuals. I think all the details are a bit too vulgar to post here, though. Long story short: we're all immature and stupid so we can't have pep rallies anymore. Condom balloons. Quote: *Looks over at the Noid's sig*

We did that one year when I was in high school. Our opponents were the Trojans. We skipped out of school after lunch.Their stadium was decorated with a couple boxes of condoms, filled with helium, and tied to the bleachers. |

I have made that connection hours before you. And I hate pep rallies with a passion. I think I'll fake faint and then hang out in the nurse's office. Or explain to some teachers why I don't want to go to pep rallies and hopefully they will let me hang out in their room for the duration. Or better yet, just walk out the door, stating the stupidness of the pep rallies. Wait, no. Then I'd get suspended.

By the way, I wasn't merely being silly when I said that. Get a load of this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 02122.html That beats almost everything else in this thread. (I think it's tied for first with that gun thing.) Speaking Spanish with your friends at school is not grounds for suspension. Doesn't matter if they were repeatedly told not to do it; they shouldn't have been told not to in the first place. Doesn't this sort of thing go against pretty much everything that our schools are supposed to stand for? Aren't we supposed to embrace language and culture, and promote mutual understanding and stuff like that? That guy doesn't deserve to be principal. A decision like that should be grounds for freakin' firing him. - Kef |

I am in agreement with Gov. Arnold: it is important for immigrants to learn to master the dominant language of our culture. I also like that some Hispanic groups agree with it. But this is ridiculous. Why would speaking a foreign language be problematic at school? Heck, most decent schools TEACH foreign languages (I wouldn't send my kids to a public school that didn't). On the other hand, all that "Like, you know" talk... |

I agree with you on that. But it shouldn't be mandated. If you want to succeed in life, then yes, you bet you should learn your English. But if you still want to hold onto some of your culture, then who's to stop you?

I can't remember exactly the reason, but the administration at my school didn't want people speaking foreign languages because only the few people who speak it would be able to understand what they are saying. I guess it was a threat to school safety or something like that. EDIT: iand93 wrote: Just found this on stumbleupon.

I gots another story! My math teacher openly insults the kids during class. She used to talk about how badly the kids screwed up on the tests that she just took back with the student teacher. At least the student teacher isn't here anymore... Anyway, she still finds ways to reveal kids' grades to the entire class. Here's how she did so one day... Teacher:I finished grading your tests, and they were horrible. I have never seen such terrible grades. Joe, you haven't failed this badly for a few years now, right? Joe:*Is very close to crying* And... Teacher:OK, I'm done grading your tests. Jake, 100. Matt, 100. Tom, can I see you for a sec? Tom:*Talks to the teacher, and walks away very sad looking* Teacher: Zach, 100. Joe, can I see you for a sec? Oh, and I forgot to mention:The principal does not give a crap. (No, I am not listed as one of the kids above.) Oh, yeah! More lunch monitor stupidity! Monitor:Hey, you! Young lady! Get down from there! Me:*Is standing on the bottom step of the bleachers, and thinks she's talking to someone else* Monitor:Hey! Get down from there! You, on the bleachers! Me:*Realizes that she's talking to me* Me? Monitor:Yes, you! Get down! Me:But I'm not doing anything...or a girl! Monitor:Yes, you are! On both accounts! Jerk. |

The article about being suspended for speaking Spanish - WTPF? Being bilingual is a GOOD thing. Or did Kansas miss that memo? He didn't even say anything objectionable! Now, I'm not saying all idiots deserve to die, but why can't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |

About the whole condom balloon talk. The other week, this kid at the table got a ton of condoms and anal lube, and things kinda got out of hand, and by the end of lunch, the table was covered in Astroglide and a couple of condoms. |
