Does anyone read anymore?

I try to read as often as a possibly can, because I love to. I have coined the phrase "Being eaten alive by literature" to describe the sensation of being so deep into a book that you try to do everything else around it, with one hand, and your eyes focused on the page. I read magazines very often, the newspaper when I can, and regular ol' books less becuase my life is hectic, but still frequently. I almost always finish books, even when I dislike them. I'd have to really, really hate to book to quit in the middle of it.

Normally, if I had just been to the library, I would read 3 or four books a week. I spend every night up late with a book... That's why I am always tired looking. Because I am tired.
But I feel like all the good books have run out. I keep having to RECYCLE.

I read, not just for school, but for pleasure.

For example, I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, and currently I'm reading this cool teen fiction/sci-fi (yes, really) novel called Uglies. None of this was assigned for school, and I often prefer the books I read outside of school to books I'm assigned. (Well, except for Surviving The Applewhites and Stargirl, both in 6th grade. I love those books.)

I'm one of those people who really likes to re-read old favorites. I generally keep books (as opposed to selling them to a used book store) on the basis of "Will I ever read this again?" Most of the stuff on my shelf I've re-read at least twice, and if I haven't, and don't plan to, I'm probably going to sell it soon.

My absolute favorite book ever is Abarat, by Clive Barker. It's a great, surreal adventure on its own, but what really gets me into it is the fantastic characters. The villain is wonderously un-villainous in many ways, and a side-character with only a few appearences is infintely more horrid and despisable than the main antagonist.

Maybe it's me, but I think we all read. I just don't think we do it while posting. It's kinda hard to read and post at the same time. That maybe why the book thread is empty.

Yeah. Keeping books. We have two huge shelves at my house full of books. And not just novels, picture books too. Oh yes, I love those picture books. But I don't like to keep a book, because sometimes I only read it once, and I don't take long to read a book. Libraries are so useful in the sense that you can go get a book, read it, then take it back. So easy!

I read occasionally. The last thing I read was The Complete Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy (all five books in one collection). I don't read as often as I should, though.

When the new Harry Potter books came out, I read those in a day or two. And no, I didn't run around going "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE! Argl Bargl Mcfargl!!"

I never stop reading. I am an English minor though, so I really don't have a choice. Although, I suppose I chose to be an English minor...knowing that I would be reading an insane amount....so there was a choice in that regard.

I plan to teacher either English or History. I'll be certified to teach both. I volunteer with a bunch of grade 9's at my local school, and am shocked to see how poorly most of the kids can read. It's such a shame. When I was in grade 9 I was reading books like Jane Eyre; these kids couldn't even attempt to read Jane Eyre. It's pretty sad.

You can always tell who reads, and who doesn't. How? By writing ability. Even with my friends, I can tell who reads and who doesn't. Writing skill is tied to reading skill.

Everyone should read, because it makes you more intelligent! I've seen the proof!

I'm proof. Back in kindergarten, I had one of those teachers who had very specific ideas about what five-year-olds should know about and what they shouldn't. So when I started asking her big questions about things like abstract art, racism, paleontology, and the circulatory system, I got frustrated and from then on decided to self-educate. If I wanted to know about something, I'd check out a book and read about it. Thus, I taught myself an unholy amount of things. How many kids knew what hemoglobin was when they were in first grade? I did.

i read like- all the time.. except.. most of the time. i read when i'm supposed to be asleep.. or doing homework.. or both :eek:

when i have kids, i'm going to force them to read To Kill A Mocking Bird. because it rocks.

I finished Stephen King already. And Dean Koontz.

And Robert Jordan, and Douglas Adams, and Dan Brown.

Well, not ALL of Robert Jordan. Yet. You can only read so many thousands of pages about the Wheel of Time per year, man.

He's my favorite author EVER!!!!!!!!!!

I've read all of the WoT books at least once...


So um... yeah... I read a lot. Mainly Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Tad Williams... not the most popular authors, but I like them bunches.

I read before I go to bed. If I don't, it can take me hours to go to sleep. I'm having to limit how much I read because I keep staying up too late. Through this, and reading I do throughout the week, I'd say I finish about 2-4 books a week.

I'm running out of books!

Please don't do that, as a favor to me? There are few more sure-fire ways to ensure that someone hates a book than to force them to read it. You could heavily SUGGEST it, which by all means is fine, but kindly don't force. I've had a lot of books ruined for me by being forced to read them. I initially hated one of my now-favorite works because I was forced into reading it.
