Question about emulators:

People always say "It's only Illegal to use an Emulator if you don't own the game."

Well say, would be illegal if I bought a PS game with my own money and played it on an Emulator?

I don't think it's legal per se, but I can almost guarantee you that unless you post on every government website "Look what I'm doing, this is where I live: " then it doesn't really matter whether or not it's legal. Of course, then you may as well just download the game, too.

Not that I endorse, support, or am in any way liable for someone doing any of that. It's illegal, and laws are meant to be followed.

Yeah EDIT: it would be legal if you own the game. It's just backing up your software.
It's legal to download roms you do not own if you delete the files within 24 hours.

I think I have over 30 SNES roms, about 12 NES roms and under 10 PS1, N64, and Dreamcast roms.
About 5 of them are legal.

Actually, that's not true. It's still illegal.

And even if you own a game, downloading a ROM for it is still illegal.

Not like I ever cared. :P

You're allowed to have one back-up copy of any (read: most, some things you can't) software that you own, however, you have to actually make the copy from your own piece of software, not download it.

Erm, Yeah. I'm buying the game cause all PS roms (or, ISOs) are really, really large. At least for a dial-upper. And apprently the PS emulator I'm useing can work if you insert a PS disk into your drive...

So yeah.

Ahh, I see now Jon. I think that would of been very illegal 7 years ago, but now that the PS1 is no longer made, I'm sure you'd be able to do that.

What PS1 emu are you using? Mine is ePSXe and if it has that play through drive function you ogt to tell me where that is. My old Jumbo PS is gonna die any day now.

I think you just go to File > Run CD-ROM.

Err... at least, that's what I imagine one would do if one were so inclined to run a PSX game on their computer.

It's because Windows XP doesn't use DOS. It uses its own thing that's like DOS, but even suckier. Most DOS programs don't work with it. Get Windows 3.1 :P

or, a DOS emulator.

Yeah, most of this thread discusses one of them, "ready for prime time".

Also, regarding PSX emulators: buying the game and playing it on an emulator is only legal if you already own a PSX console, as the emulator will require you to locate a bios image (the software that is pre-installed on a PSX) and technically the only way to get one of these legally is to dump it yourself from your own PSX. However, in practice this is much more effort than most people will have the patience for, and most people will just download one from the internet. I run all my PSX games on my PC now, it's much more convenient and a lot of the time the graphics can be improved...

I think that emulation of old games should not be illegal as the makers no longer profit from them unless they make a remake (and I usually don't like remakes), however if the game is new than I think it is just wrong.

I know this is an old thread, but for the record:

The "one backup" rule cited a few posts above does not apply to ROMs. In other words, you are not entitled to have a "backup copy" of a game. Therefore, downloading a ROM is still illegal even if you have the game.

Also, to answer a question earlier in the thread, it wouldn't be legal to emulate PlayStation games if you don't actually own a PlayStation, even if you do own the game and use that copy with the emulator. The reason is that a PlayStation emulator is going to require a ROM of the PlayStation BIOS (a chip inside the PlayStation itself), and that ROM is protected by copyright law. If you were to somehow get a legal copy of this ROM, then emulating the game would not be illegal (it's not the use of an emulator that's illegal, it's copyright infringement).

So, what happened to C3E? Has development stopped? What's going on?

Well, I haven't talked to Snowthrower in a really long time. I'd say it's just on a really long hiatus. Maybe I can update it, though. I still have the source code.

That'd be nice. It doesn't seem to load at a resolution supported by my LCD.
I assume it's fullscreen 640 X 480. Is that right?
