Who here plays the piano? I personally love the piano and think it is the most sophisticated and efficient musical instrument in the world. There are some pieces composed for the piano (Note: For this thread, when I speak of pieces composed for the piano, I refer to classical music, or music in the same general style or genre.) (Other note: Those of you not cultured and/or smart enough to enjoy classical music, you are given the kind option not to post;if you do it may lead to irksome thread inefficiency.) that are simply awesome. What are your opinions on anything pianop realated

You beat me to the punch, Jones. I was just about to say something very similar.

I took a few years of piano a long time ago to help me with my electro beat programming. I always got up to playing on an intermediate level, but never got great at it, and now I'm years out of practice.

Setting aside the "not cultured/smart enough" thing, I do love the piano. It's my favorite instrument. Whenever I find any kind of piano-ish instrument, I sit down and play. I once sat in a RadioShack for about an hour and did nothing but play their keyboard. =P

I play the piano. I am mainly into songs from the 60's through the 80's, but my piano teacher has me play classical songs and also some contemporary songs as well.

I play piano... but there's no cool songs for piano, and I don't really like piano rock, so I'm thinking of getting into bass guitar.

I plays the piano! I can play it good. I play the drum too. I play it better than piano. This band teacher guy says I should stick to piano, cause it's probably an easier path if you are good at it.

I also started guitar a bit, but I had to skip it for soccer.

I play piano...if my screenname didn't give me away yet. I mostly get into jazz, but I love piano for its versatility in all genres--its timbre has something about it that just can work for anything, it seems.

I've written plenty of stuff (most of it not so good) for piano...and I'm currently finishing up a minimalistic piece for two pianos and synthesizer. As far as classical piano literature, I really can get into some of the Romantics: Liszt, Chopin, and Debussy, to name a few. Beethoven's also got some phenomenal works for piano (but rarely did that genius of a man write anything NOT phenomenal).

But perhaps my single most favorite piece for piano is something I heard recently by composer John Anthony Lennon (no relation to the Beatle, I think). His piece called "Death Angel (Metamorphosis)" is absolutely gorgeous. Here's an mp3 sample.

The only good stuff with piano is rock with piano in the background.

Green Day: listen to them enough, you will hear it.

Umm....no. Listen to some Beethoven and Mozart, those two will show you how a piano is supposed to be played.

Though Chris Martin of Coldplay knows how to tickle the ivory. Same goes for Sir Elton John.

Now Coldplay isn't bad. I actually like them. I didn't even think about them. But they are still rock. Soft rock, but still.

Yeah, of course I play. Keyboards are kinda my main instrument, you know. Or at least they were until last summer.

I cannot play piano (wish I did...) but my sister plays a little piano. She can sort of play 'good day sunshine' on piano. I sing along. It's much fun. And she can play 'Here, There and Everywhere' and we both sing it. Sometimes at a really high key to freak out the neighbours. Hahaha. Those guys are weird anyway, though.

But getting off topic here. I wish I could play Piano, and I am insanely jealous of anyone who can.

And 'tickle some ivory', I gotta remember that one.
I play piano, I am currently in 6th grade in the "piano for leisure" category.
I also write my own songs on piano, Douglas should know that.

I play the piano. Or, well, keyboards in general. I have taken only two piano lessons in my life though and I don't own an actual acoustic piano. But I do make music and I've got a keyboard hooked up to my computer.

Wait, what? Oh, that's fair, man.
Look, I don't mean to start a flamewar or anything but that's just plain snobby and rude. I don't really listen to or play classical music but I've got full respect towards classical music and the people who enjoy it.

Well, I suppose I'm just an uneducated mule and wasn't suppose to post here after all. Sorry.

I am a big fan of the piano. My favourite would have to be Chopin's Nocturne. That rocks my world.

I used to play the piano, when I was younger. I think I got up to Grade 4? Not quite sure. I couldn't play today, even if I tried. I forget it all. Kind of a shame, really.

My one friend takes Jazz Piano in college, and he's amazing. I love to listen to him play.

My bud Kory plays some mean piano.
He goes to Belmont in Nashville right now, and plays with pretty much anyone who will let him (and that's pretty much everyone who hears him). He's been playing since around the time he learned to walk.

The man makes ya sick with his talent. He's doing some of his own composing, too, so he's even deadlier.

Me, no so much.. I can pound out a couple of old rock songs, things I picked up while working at the performing arts center back home, but beyond that, I'm not much better than your average 6 year old pounding on the keys.

I love listening to piano, but I'm not much on "Classiclal". I really like Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (it sounds mega cool on piano), jazz, and piano bar stuff (Howl at the Moon). I know Howl just does covers of stuff, and it's not instrumental, but it's still cool. Actually, I like pretty much anything on piano, as it amazes me how many sounds (styles) you can get out of a hunk of wood, some wires, and some keys.

My neighbor can play the piano really well. It puts me to shame. Actually, most musicians put me to shame, since I have no musical talent what-so-ever.

Well, when I was younger, I used to take lessons, but then, you know, I quit. Last summer I began to pick it up again, this time by myself. I can't play notes fluently, I basically just take songs I already know and play them, or write my own. So basically I've taught myself. I'm actually pretty good at it, and its not stressful and its perfect for me.

I'm flattered. By the way, I'm 11, just to give you an idea, so I might not listen to some weird old crap from the '60s by hippies on pot. Just to let u know.

Whoops. I apologize. I didn't mean it that way or nuthin'. Post all you like. I was just referring to some people who only like rap ( not really music) who tend to get into some really stupid arguments with me, in real life and on forums, where they have no evidence to support that rap is, in fact music, except, "Classical is retarded. It is by people who wear a freakin' wig.." etc. Post all u like, just dont flame classicals. Thank you for allowing me to clear that up.

My lil sis plays the peeyanner, and she's pretty good. I'm still waiting for her to learn "Rhapsody in Blues", arguably one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed.

Wow, for a second I thought you were going to redeem yourself with an actual apology but then you just turned it into another random, undirected insult. Way to boost your popularity.

I play the piano, but not nearly as much as I used to. I took lessons for the better part of 8 years. I finally quit when I got into high school. I wasn't emotionally ready for the Rachmaninoff piece that my teacher had me learning. I also played some of Gershwin's work. (not Rhapsody, but I think that is a better orchestra piece).

Lately, whenever I get the chance, I find myself playing Jon Schmidt or sometimes if my little brother has his drums upstairs by the piano we rock out with a little Ben Folds Five. :)

Some of my favorite music though is from (oddly enough) the video game, The Sims. Listen to the music when you are in building mode. I only have the original game (no expansions) so I don't know if it is the same in later versions. There is one song in particular that I found sheet music for. The title is "Building Music #6" I think. I also seem to remember that they person who transcribed it was named "Michael Jordan". I didn't realize that NBA stars had such musical talent though...

This link might get you started if you are interested.

Something about this really bothers me. You know, not all people/musicians living in the 60s were "hippies on pot".

Eh...I can't play the piano for beans.

EDIT:

Whoa. I thought me and my friends were the only ones.

Anyhoo. Piano. I still can't say I like classical. But Queen is an awesome rock band with the piano.

It can be played by a single pianist though. I once saw a one-man play called George Gershwin Alone, in which one man portraying Gershwin told his life story and played some of his music. At the end he played Rhapsody in Blues with just the piano. Even if all he did for the play was just play music, he still would have gotten a standing ovation.
