I just really like the clarinet part. No piano can do that justice :)

Been playing for the past 4 and a half or so years. I think it was better that I started on that about the same time as I started playing saxophone, as we covered a lot of music theory really fast in my pia no lessons, which really helped my sax playing.

Oh, and considering a xylophone/marimba has the exact same key layout as a piano, I got coralled into playing that in my school band. Fun stuff.

Though of course the spacing and technique is WAY different than piano...and even different between different makes and models of keyboard instruments...I mean, I have piano skills and other music knowledge, but I've never been trained on any percussion instrument, even keyboard instruments, so whenever I've tried to hack at a marimba, it's only with limited skills.

I've always wanted to start playing piano, but I haven't...
I think I could pick it up easier than most people could, since I have been around one all my life, but I don't think I will anytime soon.
My mom is giving free lessons, though.

Of course rap is music! Music is an expression of emotions via sounds, words and instruments. You can't call something 'not music' just because it's not something you're into! That's really ignorant of you. I mean, what if I didn't like classical music and said that IT wasn't music, hmm? It's the same thing.

Be nicer and more careful with your words. You're not gonna make any friends if you keep making general insults to people.

But, toastpaint.

I like the piano, but alas, I canot play it. Weep for me.

You know... technically, the piano is a percussive instrument :)

Or would it be a stinged instrument... I can never remember

Interesting definition of music, Musachan. I always thought music had to have melody, harmony, and rhythm, but I'll look into that ;)

This might give you somewhere to start.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_music

As for rap not being music because it lacks "melody, harmony, and rhythm" I think it's quite obvious that you haven't listened to much rap. Just because the lyrics are often spoken doesn't mean that the song is missing those characteristics.

Technically, it's debatable as for its classification. Some people say it's percussion, others say it's string, and yet others put it in a fifth classification (after woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion) of "keyboard instruments" that also include organ and harpsichord.

Heh...not according to such minimalists as John Cage, who saw every single noise in the universe as some form of music.

I used to bug people with that question. My friend Greta said that she considers piano it's own class, because it's a combination of percussive and string...

Whatever it is, I can't play it...

I used to play, but not anymore. Though I love listening to piano music - especially the violent variety, like Rachmaninov and Liszt.

Oh man, I don't practice enough. My mom took away my computer privaledges (sp?) until I practice enough. I'm lucky that she's in Telluride at the moment. I better go down and practice.

The fact that I don't practice enough and get by on pure heredity from my grandpa's cousin (polish celebrity/opera singer) will haunt me until the day I die.

No!! Has the public lost interest in the piano? There haven't been any posts in a while...

I actually just got home from a piano lesson.

I'm learning one of those dainty Clementi Sonatinas. It's a lot of fun. But what I really enjoy is playing Bartok. I just finished learning a Sonatina by him and I'm working on his Allegro Barbaro which is just plain weird. I love playing the piano no matter what I'm playing. I play lot's of classical music, but also Chicago, Billy Joel, Elton John, Diana Krall etc. just for fun. I can usually just sight read. Hyms are also very good practice for sightreading and I play a lot of them on Sunday.

I also play trombone, y'all. And I'm learning tuba.

I play quite a bit of piano. Interest in the instrument sprung five years or so ago when I started listening to Ben Folds. I don't consider myself in any way to be great, but I have a good sense of the instrument and can fiddle around on it if I do please. The day I know that I've reach expertise at the instrument is the day that I can fluently play Rhapsody in Blue.

Wow....you read my mind..... I'm working on Rhapsody in Blue for a school talent show. Got about another month to perfect and memorize it
