When I'm using a nonliving pillow, it's gotta be cold. I do the pillow-flip thingy too. My cat Sparky makes a great pillow, though, if she's up for it.

I like my cold, but If it is summer I have to constantly flip the pillow, but it does get kinda yucky down there (I toss and turn, so my head goes all over and it sheds hair).

Cold. Although when it's winter, I prefer it warm. Not hot, but just warm. I flip the pillow only when I'm ill, because the pillow just gets too hot then.
