So, what science projects have you done? We're they succesful? We're they hard to make? Do I sound like a teacher?

Well, this year, I measured the speed of light by melting cheese in a microwave; Pretty complicated.

Didn't even make it past the school.

Last year, I did it on electromagnetic coils. Kinda easy.

Made it to regionals, I think. Then the people at the community college didn't even know how to judge.

"Are we supposed to ask questions now?"

Sheesh.

I once made an underwater ant colony... with like, an air tube and stuff.

For this year's science fair (yeah, its mandatory), I did "The Effects of Caffeine On People."
Yep. Copied straight from caffeine.

And you can bet it was fun.

Let's see... I've doen one every year for the past 6 years, starting with first grade..

1. Classification
2. Light and Prism-typew stuff
3. Albinism
4. Optical Illusions
5. Chain reactions
6. Stirling Engine.

The optical illusion one was probably my favorite. Those things rule.

Probably the most fun I had doing a science project was in 8th grade. The task was to build a skeleton using recyclable materials or stuff that was otherwise going to be thrown out but still perfectly good to use for the project. I (unofficially) named it "Michael Jackson", since the way I did the skull would have looked like said singer had I cut a hole for the nose.

Fun times...

This year (bio) we don't really build anything, but I got to do one project as a series of 3D renderings. One of the coolest projects I ever did, except for....SPANISH!!!!11!one! OK, so I'm getting really off-topic here...but anyways the gist of that project was that our group built a Quake III level as a model of an Aztec city.

Toastpaint.

Oh wow, Science Fair Projects. For whatever reason I never had those in grade school--but I DID have one in high school. Voltage power of organic batteries. Lemons and potatoes won. Lame project, though.

High school! Wagh! I graduated in Aught Four...seems so long ago...*paints her toast*

I'm taking a genetics course now where I have to work with fruit flies. I classify their phenotypes, produce crosses, and predict the phenotypes of their progeny. The only problem is that you need to gas them before you take them out to work with them. If you gas them too much, you end up killing them, but if you gas them too little, they wake up really fast and start walking away as you're working with them. It's fun but it's a LOT of hard work--it's a semester-long project and you're often required to go into the labs at bizarre times--you can't control when the flies will start hatching/reproducing, so somebody always has to be on watch to catch them before things go out of control. One day last week I was in the lab until 11 at night. Ah, what fun...this project will last well until the end of May. If this thread lasts I'll let you know how it goes.

I've done two on the same subject (follow ups eight years later...mwahaha) one why/how toast lands jelly-side down and the effects of changing the drop height to the chances of landing face up or face down. Conclusion? Everyone needs to go out and but eight-foot high counter tops and tables, or try to launch the toast as far as possible horizontally if you see it start to fall.

And I've done a robotics event, which at first failed miserably, but it turned out fine due to incoherent rules and specs that ultimately resulted in a five way tie for first place

The last Science project I did was in my Junior year of high school. I had to make a Bio-Dome. We could place it anywhere in the galaxy. We had to make it have everything that you would need to support 10 people and the subsequent generations that were to follow. If I remember correctly, I did a full LEGO model and got an A on it.

I never did those. I'm not very scientific.

The only science fair I ever did was in middle school. I studied conditioning (i.e. Pavlov) on my pet rat (don't worry, there were no electrical shocks or anything involved, only treats). I don't even remember what the results were.

Thank God I haven't had to do any lately. We were forced to do this stupid science fair in 3-6th grade. I did have to sing a song about Venus with a friend.

"Venus! Venus! Venus! Venus!
It's not appropriate to rhyme with Venus!"

No, It's not really that sort of thing... I'd say it's a good Off-Subject thread.

I was homeschooled up until university, so I rarely had science fairs... :p
There was one year, where I went to a Chrsitian school for Grade 5 and made a science project on rust.. It was pretty dang sweet. I used a Tonka Truck.

I had to do a "cell city" which is a city having all the functions of a cell. Mine and my partner's was terrible. But the bad part is, the teacher gave us a mark down for not using our time wisely. ????????????
We barely talked in class, and when we did, it was about the project! We even came in for lunch twice! Yeah, that sucked.

In 6th grade, for the mandatory science fair, I did a project on whether the brain memorized black + white text or colored text better, and whether girls or boys had better memories. Black text did better, even though colored text was SUPPOSED to do better. This is because our printer printed colors crappy. XP And girls did better... by one point.

This year, our only science project so far has been to use taxonomy to classify something. I did Elmer's glue.

That's horrible. You let a Tonka truck rust?
