Post subject:  Favorite Movies Growing Up

Just kick me if this topic's already been posted.

I came to a sad realization recently--they just don't make kids' movies like they used to. It seems like filmakers are more concerned with special effects and fancy techniques then they are with good, solid storyline. Worse yet are the film distributors who create dozens of stale, re-hashed sequels that sour the excellent, initial film that they are based on.

So here's a thread for those who remember the "good old days" when kids' movies were actually GOOD and fun to watch. I grew up in the late 80's-early '90s, so I'll naturally showcase a few selections from then. So here, in no particular order:

1) The Land Before Time--and I'm talking about the first one, not the seventeen terrible sequels. Those sequels do not exist to me. This movie was short and solid, sweet but not saccharine. All of the characters were adorable, but I remember especially liking Ducky, aka "yep yep yep!" (and I was most depressed when I found out recently that the little girl who voiced her was brutally murdered just before the movie's initial release). I'm amazed that my VHS copy is still functioning because I watched this one so often.

2) Okay, this one's a bit more obscure. This one's for all ten people who remember The Brave Little Toaster. It's a movie about abandoned household appliances in search of their beloved owner. No joke. The music was VERY catchy if I remember correctly (most of it '80's pop-style). My favorite character was this adorable little lamp, who was named....Lampy. (Yeah, they weren't really creative with names). I still cry on the inside when I think of Lampy getting electrocuted. Apparently a sequel was made to this but I've never actualy seen it...they probably ruined it somehow, anyway, so I doubt I'll even bother.

3) Time for animal movies! Milo and Otis and Homeward Bound. Particularly the latter. Homeward Bound is one of the few movies that makes me cry EVERY time I watch it. Just pop in the last five minutes and I'm bawling my eyes out. Shadoowwwwww....*sniffles*

4) The Lion King. I was eight when this came out, I think. It's probably the last good movie that Disney made. There's not much else to say as I could go on and on about its greatness. I used to drive my poor parents mad because all I did for the longest time was just go around singing the songs and play "Lion King" with my friends at school.

As I think of more movies, I'll likely mention those, too.

Fantasia, I remember as a kid I watched that hours on end. I don't know why I liked it :p

You liked those movies too?! I used to watch them soooooooooooooo many times! I'd have to say, I didn't like in Milo and Otis how the split apart... :-S

I've also seen Homeword Bound, many of times, I have one and two. I perfer one a lot more though, I like the mountainess, nature kind of setup in Homeword Bound one. I know one part that would make a lot of people feel sad, the part where Chance fell in that mud hole and like broke his leg. I wasn't sad. I'M A MAN! :p

Oh, I used to love that movie when I was younger. I hardly remember it anymore, though, but I remembe3r it being really sad. And then there was The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars, but I don't really remember that one. I think I only say it once, on the Disney Channel...

*giggle* Shadow fell in the hole, not Chance.

Nah, the saddest part of the film is at the end, when the boy's all sad because everyone's pet returned except his...and then you see Shadow limp over the hill and you're like "YES!!! He made it!!"

There was a third one called "The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue" made in 1999.

My favorite movie from when I was younger was Toy Story. The only thing I remember from when I was two was when this movie came out in theaters and I saw commercials for it all the time. Then I waited forever for it to come out on video so I could finally watch it.

My favourite movie was, is, and always will be Ghostbusters. It has been since I was three. The librarian in the opening used to scare me. =)

This sucks. I can't find my old Milo and Otis movie. I remember it like perfectly though... how the cat (I forget which is which, isn't Milo the dog?) jumped in the box and was sent down stream for a long time...

Whoa, Windee. It's like you're......... INSIDE MY MIND.

Seriously, I absolutely adored The Brave Little Toaster as a kid. And I still like The Land Before Time (once again, the original, not the crappy sequels: by the time the ninth or whatever one came out, I realized that they had finally reached an entirely new level of sucky).

I don't remember liking Milo and Otis that much, but I watched it once..... when there was nothing else on TV.

Oh, and I watched the Brave Little Toaster sequels too (TBLT Goes To Mars and TBLT To The Rescue). I used to like them, but then I realized they sucked.

The Secret of N.I.M.H., All Dogs Go To Heaven, The Land Before Time...*sigh*...Don Bluth is an animatic genius, plain and simple. I also liked some of Disney's stuff, such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

Oh...and anyone remember "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest"? Included Robin Williams and Tim Curry as character voices, though criticized by some as having too much pro-environment political overtones directed at children...I never saw it as such when I was young.

I remember that one! I remember very much liking the bat. But yeah, it was a bit preachy in many ways. I had a copy of it but I don't think I watched it that much.

I was thinking a few days ago about how that's pretty much the best scene in a movie EVAR! So anyways:

-Brave Little Toaster
-Toy Story
-Fantasia
I'll prolly think of more later.

1.) Lion King. I used to watch it like twice a day when I was five.
2.) Toy Story. Good lesson in friendship.
3.) Muppet Treasure Island. Just too funny. I still watch it.

Cool World. I specifically remember that. Even though it's one of those cartoon-real-life crossover type of things, it's not a kid's show... at all, but I still remember enjoying it. And now I can't find it anywhere. *weeps*

Who Framed Rodger Rabbit... such pwnage. Such pwnage.

Then there's Beavis and Butthead Do America. Seriously. One night, there was this accident in the house where I ended up under a bunk bed and a scar on my head (which is still there). My parents took me into the living room where they were going to watch this, and I ended up being able to see it (where the reason I was in my room in the first place was because they were going to watch it). So, for this reason, this movie holds a special place in my heart. Plus, it cracks me up. I have a crude sense of humor. xD So I watch it any time I can, now.

OKAY, okay, um... kid's movies. I know I saw kid's movies.

We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story... or something like that. I used to watch that all the time. I was (and still a bit am) super obsessed with dinosaurs. =B
The Last Unicorn. I loved it so hard.
THE SMURFS AND THE MAGIC FLUTE. HOLA CRAP. I LOVED The Smurfs! I still love The Smurfs! Plus, I got that movie for Christmas! Can't beat awesome Christmas gifts.

Um... pretty much all I can think of right now.

Holy-holy snap. I was just about to post that until I saw your post. I don't remember much....actually, I don't remember if I liked it much.
Actually, I dont even remember what it was about.
It sure was....a kids movie.

OH-MY-GOSHNESS. So many of you used to love the same movies as me!

1. The Brave Little Toaster. YES. VERY VERY YES. LAMPY OWNS YOUR SOUL. Blanket was pretty cute too, though. (Was his name Blanket or Blankie? Don't recall.) I loved the song with the "new-fangled" technology singing about themselves.

2. Fern Gully. I love this movie, but also am a bit surprised that it didn't scare the living daylights out of my younger self--Hexxus is really, really freaky! And the ending upset me...

3. The Hobbit. SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS THIS MOVIE. I could pretty much recite it word for word when I was younger.

4. The Land Before Time. 'Twas the first movie I ever saw in theaters. Wow... that's so sad about the little girl... I actually enjoyed a couple of the sequels, though. They weren't all bad.

5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Watched. It. To. RIBBONS.

Here's a few more nobody's mentioned yet...

-The Felix the Cat Movie. OK, this was incredibly stupid, but I loved it to absolute DEATH as a kidlet. (Not to be confused with a Kidlet.) There's one scene in it though that still cracks me up--The weird professor and his assistant are trying to buy their way into a circus, and the creatures up ahead buy their way in with wrenches and stuff--man, the way the ticket-taker deadpans the line "Or, if you are still an amphibian and require a wet seat..." gets me good!

-Samson and Sally. What? Yes. It was a movie about two whales, one named Samson and the other named Sally, and... well, honestly, I can't remember much about it, except that I rented it more times than I could count! It was a film by a tiny little company, and they had another movie I always rented, Scamper the Penguin. But because they've disappeared from the shelves of the Blockbuster I always used to rent them from, I doubt I'll ever see them again...

-Aladdin. This movie still remains one of my favorites to this day.

Pretty sure there was a different plot to the Smurfs one. xD But, bah, what do I know? I haven't seen it in years. I don't know where any of my VHS tapes are.

I must go... on an expedition one day. I really want to find them all again.

One woman,
One VCR,
One quest.

I really didn't watch movies when I was growing up. We were a non-watching-movie-family, my family was. I guess...a whole lot of Disney films! Both Disney channel original and classic cartoons. I've seen a lot of 'em, but my cousin has probobly seen them all, except for maybe a few. And I guess the Power Rangers movie, although I don't remember what it was about.

Ooh, and I just remembered some more that I watched growing up:

Disney's Pinocchio (the 1940 cartoon)
Banjo, the Woodpile Cat

And these two were my first introductions into Animé (sp?), long before I knew that Japanese animation had its own classification:
The Fantastic Adventures of Unico
Unico and the Island of Magic
