When you start to argue/discuss/fight with someone do you hold to your opinions no matter what argument is presented, or are you willing to be turned by a side which you had not previously thought of.

I bring this up because a lot of the "discussion" we are exposed to as americans (for any of you non-americans chime in on whether you have this or not) is simply people yelling at each other, getting angry, or the argumentative equivalent of shoving your fingers in your ears and going la-la-la-la-la-la.

I don't even really care about which side is "right" but more about who prefers which method of discussion.

I hold my opinions to a certain point. I can be swayed by evidence or other views, but you have to present some valid stuff for me to accept it and turn.

Well, when ever I debate something, I always present my side and listen to the other person's side, and if I can see their point and realize why mine was not the right one, then my opinion will most likely change. I've done it quite a bit.

Considering my own on-the-spot debating skills are pretty terrible at best (which is the main reason why you don't see me posting in the R&P very much, and the reason why I was conveniently "absent" on my debate day against the class valedictorian during my junior year in high school), I'm more likely to be swayed by someone else's argument, especially on this Forum. Some of the debaters we have here are very good at getting their points across strongly.

But usually, it depends - if my opinion is strong enough, then I'll hold to it no matter what.

That pretty much says my opinion on this, too. You don't wanna be unchabgable, but there should be a reason to changing your opinion.

my philosophy professor last semester told me about this activity that Greek students used to learn. it was a debate method called augon (a wrestling term used to describe something like turinging someones head literally around backwards and kind of breaking the neck..i think) and it involved two students on opposite sides and the one who entrapped the other with logic into forcing an agreement to the opposite side, won.

just thought that might be some brain candy.

Hurm...I get an image in my head of a whole bunch of Leonard Nimoys dressed in togas addressing each other...heh.

I agree with the other sentiments that I usually have my own opinions on any matter (though not all--there are some matters that I've never really sat down to think about much, and therefore have no real opinion on) and would request some sort of logical argument to change them.

On pretty much everything I keep an open mind, except for my faith (I believe 100% word for word everything in the Bible, no compromises). If something goes in opposition to the beliefs I hold, I don't immediately discard it, but I don't immediately throw out my beliefs either. There should be a balance struck between what you believe and what others want you to believe. Don't give up your beliefs just because others attack them. Remember the golden rule. A stitch in time saves nine. Chuck Norris created the Grand Canyon when he was challenged do a ditch digging contest.

Words of wisdom from sb_enail.com. Use them wisely, and responsibly.

In all honesty, I'm stubborn and (more often than not) uninformed. So, in other words, I usually stick to my guns even even when all logic has abandoned me. It's a bad thing, I admit, which is why I usually keep my opinions to myself. I try to keep an open mind and, much like Ace said, I too can be swayed. It just takes a lot of swaying.

Hmm. It depends. Certain topics I'll allowed myself to be swayed by well-thought out opposition, but others I'm stubborn as heck. Normally, though, those are topics that are very personal to me or affect me in some way directly. I can be a total pain, but eh, I have my reasons for my beliefs. I don't look down on anyone for their opinions, and I expect the same from everyone else.
