Mine would have to be John Williams.
He has great works such as:
    Jurrassic Park
    Star Wars
    Indiana Jones
    Olympic Fanfare And Theme
    Jaws

Such an amazing man.
What about you folks?

Gershwin and Randy Newman. Thomas Newman's pretty great too.

Ugh...I really can't stand most of John Williams' stuff--especially since I can usually pick out where he's stolen his ideas from. I will credit him for Schindler's List, Hook, and Harry Potter, though.

My favorite composer? Hard to say now, though it used to be Danny Elfman for the longest time. However, I've recently (as in within the past couple of years) been turned on to a number of other magnificent composers, including:

Alban Berg
Igor Stravinsky
Bela Bartok
Viollaine Corradi
Lisa Gerrard
John Adams
Jack Stamp

...I think I'll leave the list there for now.

I know he's not classical like some of the other people up there, but I have to say Tsuneo Imahori is one of my favorite composers.

Camille Saint-Saëns, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms.
There are more I like, but I don't have time now to mention them all.

Arvo Part. I love his Te Deum, Magnificat, and De Profundis. His style is a combination of Medieval/Renaissance sacred choral music and modern classical. You can sample some of his music on AMAZON.COM.

In addition to Arvo Part, I also love Feliz Mendelson, Giovanni Palestrina, Orlando de Lassus, and Gregorio Allegri.

And of course, Homsar. :homsar: :p

You forgot Jean-Babtiste Lully! He ruled! He was the baroquemeister! And I always thought of Monteverdi as being late Rennaissance.

didymus, i am very impressed with your inclusion of Arvo Part! excellent. i wasn't sure how many other people know about him. i am going to be a pain and list a lame non-classical non-movie scoring fellow who IS still a composer. Sufjan Stevens. love him or hate him (a lot of people discredit him as another quiet, boring indie dude) he has some serious composing chops, and if you doubt it check out the way he uses all sorts of guitars, strings, voices, percussion etc. as a sort of not quite orchestra in songs like "They Are night Zombies" "The predatory wasp of the palisades" and "Chicago" on his Come on Feel the Illinoise album. i'm a fan and hooray for his Pantheon award!

I especially love Wagner, Mahler, Weber, Schubert, Mozart and Haydn. But there's lots more where that came from. I listen to lots of classical music.

I too am a huge fan of Rachmaninoff. For modern(er) composers I really like stuff by Robert W Smith. John Williams and Danny Elfman are great for the type of music they are doing... but trying to compare it to some of the classical greats isn't really fair.

I also really enjoy stuff by Gershwin. :)

One of my favorites is, I think his name is Robert Schumann. I think. He made "Wild Horseman" and "Knight Rupert". Maybe, I forgot who did it.

Wow...yeah...Knight Rupert pwns all..... I feel the urge to put some of the single notes down here for anyone who wants to pick it out on piano or instrument. These ones come first, and are eighth notes: A B A B C B C B. Then there are staccato quarter notes : A B C E A B C E and then quarter notes B B C. Just the main them though. Well written and easy to play piece.
