Post subject: Saddest Video Game Ending.
PostPosted: Mon May 08, 2006 4:55 am
I think I just found it. Mother 3.

I imported this game, so I had to use a translation to understand everything. But gosh, it's incredible.

Here is the video: ( CAUTION Major Spoilers and Confusion if you don't know the story of the game )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RCZOO5VYI8&search=Mother%203

This I find the most saddening.

But others I would include would be:

Shadow of the Colossus-2005, Playstation 2.
I couldn't play this game for over a week after I "won" it. The plot was so cleverly hidden. Revealing everything after its too late. But it did have a small bit of hope.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker-2003, Nintendo Gamecube.

Seeing Daphnes in his last moments of life...

Riven-PC Computer, Cyan.
Seeing the world of Riven completly fall apart was both spectacular, scary, and sad.

So, what are your moments?

Hmm. First post and I'm already dragging it off toastpaint. I don't know about endings, but I do know that I've only ever cried four times at a video game. They weren't at endings, but maybe they hold some relevance.

In Ocarina of Time, part with Link and Saria on the bridge is just... heartrending. I still cry a little every time I play through that game, and I've done that a LOT. The forlorn look on Saria's face as Link runs away just grabs at my soul...

Staying within the Zelda series, in Majora's Mask, when Penelope (...er, that is her name, right? I can't recall) and her father reunite gets to me too. Usually you see parents comforting their children, not the other way around, but the way she goes "It's alright, it was just a bad dream..." had me.

Going outside that, I also cried in Metroid Fusion. I can't really say what happens, since it's a spoiler--but it is right near the end, so maybe it counts. Check the Spoiler Box below if you reeeeally want to know.

Quote:
Basically, what's going on is that the Galactic Federation is coming to take over the space station to try and harvest the X parasites, but Samus and Adam, the computer, know that this can't be, because the X cannot be tamed, and they'll pretty much kill all the soldiers without a second thought. Samus offers up a solution: activate the self-destruct mechanism. Adam considers this and says something to the effect of, "Lady, if that we to happen, you would most certainly perish in the explosion." Samus pauses and replies: "...I know." I choked up pretty bad. Then I went from crying to cracking up when Adam said (basically) "Well, that's fine, but you could also change the space station's direction to crash into that planet there, and escape on your ship and get out without a scrape." Cue cutscene in which Samus' eyes fly open in a way that makes it look like she's thinking, "D'oh!"
Quote:

But the most I EVER cried at a video game was playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I was reading Scarlette's letter to Bobberey out loud, because I like reading the text in the Paper Mario games to my own strange voices. (...Don't ask.) I was sobbing along with the text. Man, am I a dork.

endings... the saddest part in a video game is probably most of Final Fantasy 7 but that is because it is THE defining game for just about everyone i know. too many sad moments, but i guess aeris's death beats them all, although cloud's flahsbacks and stuff... blah blah i could go on forever. as far as an ending: final fantasy 9, and i only say that because the gae was so silly and goofy that i didnt want to stop playing. so it was a sad for me ending.

Woah, creepy...that's exactly what I was gonna put.

But yeah...Final Fantasy IX's ending was sad to me for some reason...

The ending of Wind Waker is the only video game scene that has ever made me cry.

I never really cry when I end a video game, but the ending to FFX just grabbed me really, but then again, I'm probably obsessed with that game anyway :p

That part does suck, but it's so worth it to get to the final battle.

Killer7. The plot is way confuseing, And the ending makes little sense, but it's really emotional. Probbly like, the only time I've cried like ever.

I can't even remember what happened in the Windwaker Ending. I remember being really angry like "Man! That ending sucked!"

The Zelda nerd shall describe it as thus;

Ok, so I'll start at the finishing move on Ganon; Link uses his roll jump on him (his counter) and stabs Ganon in the head, turning him to stone (HOW?!). Next, Hyrule starts filling up with water more vastly, and hence the Kind of Hyrule gives Link and Zelda a limited oxygen to go back up to the surface. And The King of Hyrule dies with his country, presumabley the sad part. But after, they see the pirate ship with Link's sister on it and all of the other crew waving at them, then you get those funny credits.

I'm obsessed, yep.

Saddest ending? OoT, the last part was emotional... (him going back to a child, I also thought Zelda and Link were going to kiss right before you fight Ganon, when they are just standing there, staring at each other... but then BAM!! WHY GANONDORF?! THEY COULD HAVE KISSED!! :p)

Spoilers within this post. Massive ones.

Jak 3: Near the end, Jak and Damas take the strongest vehicle they can and go into the waste lands, to stop Errol. However, after a few bumps and turns, the car overturns and gets hit by a flaming boulder. Jak gets out alive, but Damas dies - just as Jak finally figures out that Damas was is father(he got that from his final words). And Damas didn't even know it. At least veger probably got eaten at the end, and Errol pretty much died(for the second time.)

X1(Mega Man): Near the end, Zero dies when Vile holds him as a hostage. But he gets ressurected in the second one.

X4: Okay, this one is sad - General, leader of the Repliforce, was coined into going on an all-out attack against the Maverick hUnters by the sill-not dead Sigma. He ends up dying. Colenol, Iris's big brother, dies, too. And Zero, who loved Iris, was forced to kill her because she went totally insane. And Sigma still doesn't die until gour games later(at least I tihnk he's dead.)

...I have to think, cause I'm sure there's more....

That was easily the most emotional scene in a game I'd ever seen. Here it is for those who want it.

The wind...is blowing...

The end of Yoshi's Island (best Mario video game/video game/computer video game?) makes me sad...the credits music just tugs at your heartstrings...best credits music ever...call me geeky, but I LOVE IT!

I think FFX's ending was pretty sad. FF7's wasn't though, Aeris had it coming to her!

Holy crap, people, practically every other post has a Zelda game in it and yet NOBODY has mentioned the ending to Link's Awakening? :o I mean... the whole island and everyone on it just disappears forever! ;_; The part where it shows them all fading away still gets to me...

Even though I've never seen the whole game (it was my friend's game) Panzer Dragoon had a rather strongsadesque ending. If I remember correctly, you die, you dragon dies, your friends are left hopelesly wandering a desert looking for you (but you're not there anyway), the world is about to violently end...

Hmm... another one...
Star Fox 2 for de GC was almost sad, but then Peppey and Rob come back. Thank heavens for escape pods, eh nintendo? why can't they kill off that stupid frog!?!

Zero dies enough times that I don't get emotional about it. :P Is that X4's X or Zero ending? I forget.

:((:((:(( I have scattered the seeds of the future...
Oh man, the music alone brings it all back. Both the tunes during the king's speech, and during the credits (the latter of which I am trying to learn to play on the keyboard :3 ) just blow me away with the sense of epic storytelling. It's a mix of sadness and hope.
I think this ending is a lot sadder for us watching it than it is storywise. I mean, for Link and Zelda, it is sad that the king died, but they saved the world and get to go on new adventures. They weren't a part of Hyrule, the sea is their home. But for the player who's been through every past Zelda title, the destruction of Hyrule is heartwrenching. Now when I play Ocarina of Time, I go through the whole game with this feeling of general depression, knowing that I'm not in the long run saving anything.

I laughed at that one actually. Link went on a date with a girl, and then it turns out he was dreaming.

LOL, PWNED

I find the plot of the Zelda games to be convoluted enough that the ending of WW doesn't bother me in the least. XD Continuity theories; bah! I'm just going to make up my own version anyway, so really. Yes, the King dies, and it's sad. But the rest of it is just like "meh." Sorry if I'm coming off as cold, but... XD

Hah! Well you can always take solace in the knowledge that Link and Zelda do find a new Hyrule, because WW is not the last game in the series. Phantom Hourglass should tell us of their discovery.

Yeah, and what about all the other games like MC and stuff? No indication of where that falls or anything, and you never know, and WW seemed like it was heavily based around just OoT, didn't it? Maybe it'll end up being like some sort of Noah thing. I don't know. I'm just yakking.

I can't remember any game endings that were particularly sad. Maybe I'm just playing upbeat games for the most part. There was the end of Riven though, the sequel to Myst... But that wasn't all that sad.

I found the ending sadning because of the fact that you saw the immense world that was Riven completly falling apart around you.

Cyan spent over 7 years making that game. The graphics are showing some age, but I'm still impressed with it for its age. But to think that the people at Cyan spent all that time making that world, only to completely deystroy it.

The saddest video game ending? Three words; old, Zelda, games. You go through all the crap to win the game, and then Zelda just says "Congratulation Link!! You are a real heroe!!" and then they, like, make out or something and then the curtains fall and it says the words, "THE ENDING" on the screen. Then the NES bombs. All those depressing endings in old video games are real tearjerkers. :((

not exactly the end, but i was playing this game called Sheep. perhaps you're heard of it.
anyway, the scene is the sheep are on a space station, that is about to explode. the leader sheep is herding them all onto the escape shuttle, but the door closes before he gets in. the next scene is a close-up of his gun, which slow-mo drops to the ground. the next scene is the shuttle heading towards earth, as the space station explodes.

Wait, I take back what I said earlier. FF7's ending was sad. Not because of the storyline or plot, but because at the end if you save in the crater you can't get out! There was so much extra stuff left to do! I had to start another game. That made me sad...

Oh, Yoshi's Island. That was sad. I completely forgot about that.

I remember quite a few bosses from that game, too. There's Bert, Big Boo, The Potted Ghost, Rafeal The Raven, and, the ultimate boss fight, that really huge/cool Bowser.

But I forgot a lot of them, too.
