Post subject:  Martial Arts, anyone?

Okay, I did a forum search for this and found nothing, so if it's ABP'd, please forgive me and redirect me. Anyways...after the Medieval Weaponry thread where I stated my interest in quarterstave training, I really started looking around online to see if anyone offered training in that department. Anyways, I came across a site for a really terrific-looking dojo in Austin that offers training with such weaponry. And I've discovered that I really have had a desire for quite some time to study martial arts. So my basic question is: Has anyone here ever had training in any form of martial arts? What were your experiences?

I pratice martial arts. For the past few years I particied Iron Kim style; a major difference is the belts, instead of colors, there are 8 sections until black belt. I was at 3rd section, almost fourth. I should've been higher, but we kept changing instructors, so my class rarely got tested. I had to restart at white belt this year, because the style of martial arts is different. So, now I'm a yellow belt.

Obviously, since I'm a pretty low rank, no weaponary yet. All pretty simple stuff right now. The most important thing is that physical strength is only half of the battle, you must have mental strength, too, you must be able to endure tiredness. After doing hundreds of kicks, you get exhausted, but you just have to keep going. I'm not that strong of a guy, but my mental strength is well developed, so I do well.

I'm actually the president and founder of the Kendo club at my university. Since we're so new, we're sharing a sensei with another nearby university, but once we get things going...

For those who don't know, Kendo is a sport based on olden-times Japanese swordsmanship - it's the Japanese version of fencing. It's hella tight, and loads o' fun.

Doesn't Kendo involve the use of bokkens?

I took American karate a number of years ago. Had to drop out after a year because I had to start working nights. I'd like to get back into it some day, but I'm thinking about a more traditional style.

Hey, my friend is, (or was) taking up kendo. Man, those were interesting swords, those kendo sticks :p

I myself am studying Tae Kwon Do. I've got my Brown Senior Belt, and am training for my black belt test that's coming up this June, which has been a majorly tight squeeze for me because of my crew season that's going on at the same time. I was lucky though, that my teacher randomly decided to start us on our black belt testingg forms while I was still two belts away. That gave me a nice head start

Bo staff is teh awexome lol

Actually, Kendo uses Shinai, which are straight swords made of bamboo. Bokken are only used for katas and single-person demonstrations.

I did Kempo for 6 years. I wish I stayed with it. Imagine the shape I would be in.

I'm training Han Moo Do. Now that I've got purple belt, I can start practising with nunchucks (as a matter of fact, I've already tried a bit).

I have a black belt in origami. I can fold you into a paper duck if you cross me.

LOL...wouldn't that be more like...black paper clip instead of black belt?
