For those who bought American Idiot, does anyone want to discuss what the album is about?
Hmm... I'm not really too sure what it's about. I think maybe...um...I'm very unsure on this...but...how America is falling from its once great position where everybody wanted to be in America, and how it's tragicly falling downard in its own calamity?
I dunno, so please,
please don't make fun of me or critize me harshly. I don't know.
Here are some examples to my theory:
American Idiot- that's obvious.
Jesus of Suburbia- tells about drugs and other bad stuff, all with teens. And how they are getting into bad situations. I dunno.
Holiday- As Billy says- " A big F-sensor U to the congress and representatives
Letterbomb-somethings in it that I can't really say too clearly
Wake Me Up...-The harshness of the war and the feelings of lossing and leaving loved ones.
My idea is not too clear.
EDIT: I'm going to do American Idiot in a nut shell on my guitar. What website can I post it on? I'm doing it on the program Audacity.
Does anybody even know that American Idiot is a rock opera? Listen to it. Fine, I'll show you how it seems to go for me.
American Idiot-Might actually be a flashback. It sort of sets the setting of the rock opera.
Jesus of Suburbia
I. Jesus of Suburbia-describes how Jesus of Suburbia, the main character is, an unruly young adult experimenting with drugs and alchohol, basically caught up in everything bad. He is a leader in his little "group"
II. City of the Damned-shows how messed up his town, named "Jingletown", is and how he hates it.
III. I don't Care-Jesus of Suburbia is starting to dislike his town, but he feels like nobody cares.
IV. Dearly Beloved-If you watch the music video, I beleive this is Jesus of Suburbia's "counselor" who lives with him. He starts telling her how messed up Jingletown is, and she doesn't seem to listen either.
V. Tales from another Broken Home-He is tired of people not listening to him, so he leaves for the city.
Holiday-It's about war, but I can't really think of how it ties into the story. Maybe the music video has to do with it.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams-He finds that in the city, things aren't much better. His opinions are his own, and nobody likes him. He "walks alone"
Are We the Waiting-Jesus of Suburbia looks back on his actions, and contemplates what to do.
St. Jimmy-Jesus of Suburbia abandones his identity and becomes St. Jimmy. He is a rebel of the city and starts a group of followers there.
Give Me Novocaine-St. Jimmy starts giving drugs out to people. This is where he meets "Whatsername"
She's a Rebel/Extraordinary girl-St. Jimmy starts dating and stuff with "Whatsername" I can't really tell the difference between the two. I think St. Jimmy gets busted for drugs, but I can't be sure.
Letterbomb-I think the reason Whatsername dumps him is because he gets caught, but I can't be sure really. Either way, she dumped him.
Wake me up when September ends- This doesn't have to do with the album. It is a tribute to Billie Joe's dad dying.
Homecoming
I. The Death of St. Jimmy- St. Jimmy is sick because his girlfriend dumped him (and maybe cause he gets caught), so he kills his identity and returns to being Jesus of Suburbia.
II. East 12th Street- Jesus is basically filling out paperwork at a police facility. This is why I think he got caught with drugs.
III. Nobody Likes You- Jesus of Suburbia is at his dwelling of sorts. He is re-evaluating his life.
IV. Rock and Roll Girlfriend-If you have the album, the lyrics for this are in the form of a letter. It is from a follower, "Tunny". He is saying that he doesn't need to be in St. Jimmy's group. Yet another reason why I think St. Jimmy got busted.
V. Homecoming- This is where Jesus of Suburbia finally decides to come back home to Jingletown.
Whatsername- In the lyrics, this is January 1st, the start of a new beginning. As he is back home, he thinks back at his girlfriend and why they left each other. He shows that he has no regret.
Back to American Idiot-The reason why I think it's a flashback is because he did all the things that everyone was caught up in (drugs, sex, violence), that he decided that America was messed up.
