I suggest you listen to their old stuff. Dookie and Nimrod were two great albums. Money well spent.

They just DON'T SOUND GOOD, and if they had a respectable image originally, they lost it and went for the "I AM A REBELLIOUS PUNK! HEAR ME WHINE!" image.

If you listened to their music, you would like them.

Let me ask you something. What songs give you a "hear me whine" image. The way you say it, you seem to think that Green Day tried a more punk image in today's music. Absolutely not the case. Lately they have been experimenting and becoming more pop.

Or are you just jealous because they outdo some music you like better. I agree that some songs are overplayed, but they aren't that bad.

Green Day is alright. I have to admit, I was thrown off when I head Boulevard for the first time: I knew very little Green Day, and thought they were a folk band. And this is coming from someone who attends a three-day folk music festival anually  I listened to Dookie, but I thought it was really repetitive. I listened to the lyrics, and even they all seemed to be saying the same things. I think I need to get Nimrod to make my final judgement about Green Day. You're not going to like them if you think of them as a punk band. They were a punk band. And now they're not. They changed their style (although for some reason they didn't change their appearance.)

i gotta say, topofsm, you really need to ditch the hard sell on green day in this thread. you're making me hate the band and i realized what bothers me most about green day. the fans. green day fans can be so cheesy, and i like the band okay but they are not exactly the pinnacle of anything. no brilliant songwriting, no amazing instruments, its just solid modern punk rock that i kind of like but dude don't ruin it. some people will just never like it.

Green Day hasn't been whiney, like...ever. If you want to listen to whiney music and make fun of it, check out Simple Plan.

And yeah, I know that American Idiot is a rock opera. It's about Jimmy. I can name a couple of the songs meanings off the top of my head, too. Like Boulevard is Jimmy being lost in the city, not knowing who he really is and having no companions(or something like that.) American Idiot is the introduction to the opera. Wake Me Up When Septemeber Ends has like, five meanings, one of those about Billie Joe's dad who died of cancer(it was cancer, right?)

Their new stuff is actually pretty cool, in my opinion. But I've only heard like, six songs form that album. Nice Guys Finish Last is also awesome.

Don't think I'm so quick to pass judgement. I've listened to their music. I hate it.

It's not their music, it's their image. They play dumb, poppy "punk" songs and dis the government by repeating the same things over and over. They wear mascara and try to look original when all they are are clones.

Name one band who wore/wears exactly the same style of Green Day. Before American Idiot came out. Then I might beleive you when you say that they are clones.

Considering that she said that Green Day doesn't sound good, I think she has listened them.

Agreed. How could she have said she hates their music without listening to it?

"They don't sound good,"
"Listen to it! You'll like it!"

...It doesn't make sense.

How can a combination of two genres of music be original?

A bit too much of a generalization, and it depends on who you're talking about. you ever listened to Beck? he is really eclectic and toys with genres in a very interesting way, but i see what you mean. some very skilled artists can use various styles but i must say that as a rule i abhor pop-punk. new found glory and all that crap...ugh.

Punk - Three-chord riffs, repeating tunes throughout the song, basic lyrics
Pop - Power chords, experimental structure, very important lyrics
Pop-Punk - Three power-chord riffs, experimental structure, pretty good lyrics.

That's about as good as I can say it.

(?)

Here's what I think:
Pop = can be played on the radio at any time of day without people complaining, and is often accompanied by ponytailed fangirls

Pop is an abbreviation of "popular".

Um...most pop songs have a reputation for the least-meaningful lyrics. Almost all of the pop songs I've ever heard don't have very important lyrics. The same goes for pop-punk. Also, pop usually isn't very experimental. It's usually what the labels know will work in the market, what is gonna sell.

Listen to Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake me up when September Ends, both of those had a slightly experimental structure, and they were the greatest hits of American Idiot. Why couldn't they play Letterbomb or Homecoming?

yeah and i think for a kid who likes green day you need to appreciate your roots a bit more, topofsm. punk is not all three chord riffs. you are in fact leaving out the most important detirmining factor of punk music: attitude. nickleback has 3 chord riffs and poor instrumentation and VERY repetitive lyrics, but that's only because they suck.

punk is about people like johnny rotten, joey ramone, joe strummer (to name some of the biggest) and an anti-establishmental attitude emphasizing personal liberty and living life. usually punk has some politcal messages (see the Clash) and often distorted guitars with fast playing and repetivie riffs are part of that. plus genres don't really work for everything. there are a lot of subcategories and other categories (ghoul punk, hardcore, power-pop, bubblegum pop).

and FYI both pop punk and pop music are pretty bottled styles of music, especially structurally: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, etc...

Boulevard of Broken Dreams doesn't have an experimental structure. It's somthing like 8 chords in the entire song, it has whiney lyrics that thousands of whiney pre-teens can relate to, and it's something that the producers know will work on the market. That's why it was a hit. It took no risks at all. September Ends is pretty much the same...it's a tad more complex than Boulevard, but still similar nonetheless.

I personally don't care for Green Day. I've got some rather picky tastes in music, and basically anything outside of them I just stay away from.

Anyone can throw together 4 powerchords and a vague psuedo-political message and call it punk. Those who actually do it well are few and far between.

Greenday is not one of those. Punk is about rebellion and not falling into the mantra of conformity. Greenday has a very toned down sound , say, pop-punk on stool-softeners. Real punk is loud abrasive and an aquired taste. Listen to the sounds of The Dead Kennedys and see if ANYONE else sounds like them. Greenday is pretty much just turning down the volume (and intelligence) of The Clash.

Band who sent real political messages have had great lines that stick with your forever. Would you call this Sex Pistols lyric something that would show up on todays main-stream radio: "I am an anarchist, I am the anti-christ" No. Greenday gives out a pre-polished politcal messgae that has been stated a million times. Say their innovators, but they are to freakin conservative to take real chances!
EDIT:
And topo I believe you asked what other people dressed like Greenday, well take a look at Depeche Mode, The Sex Pistols and throw is bad teeth you've got Greenday's 3 hour make-up regimen.

What are you talking about? It goes like this:

Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-end thing

And September goes:

Verse-Verse-Verse-Verse-Bridge Solo-Verse-Chorus (I don't even know if it has a chorus, It's mostly a bunch of verses.

Oh, sorry, I misread your post. My bad.

But....Boulevard of Broken dreams has in no way an "experimental" structure. The Verse-Verse-PreChorus-Chorus (how the song begins) is used a lot in mainstream music. And the rest is pretty uniform as well. But yes, September Ends has an interesting structure, but the structure plays a small role in making good music.

I own American Idiot and International Superhits, but they're still pretty "meh" to me. They're good to listen to when you're in that mood where you just want to turn the music up really loud and pretend your golf club is a guitar.

Erm. :poop:
