edit by SR: Fixed the title. I hated the first one and despise Mr Depp, but the least I could do was to spell the movie correctly...

Midnight showing!

July 7th happens to be my best friend's birthday, so we're making an extravaganza out of it. All I have to say is that it better not suck. In my personal opinion, the Pirates franchise should have quit while they were ahead, but the movie looks good. *Crosses fingers* Don't fail me, Pirates!

I wasn't too impressed by the first, so I probably won't see this.

I've got tickets to see it with my wife and two sisters Friday night! Woot.

And Funkstar, you must be extremely hard to please in the movie department. I've only heard of one other person who didn't like Pirates 1.

Why should I see the next one?

Well, I guess that makes it 3 people I've ever known who didn't like it. I didn't notice any lighting problems whatsoever, and how can you say Johnny Depp was far worse than mediocre? He was brilliant.

And the scriptwriting was great! No, it's not Shakespeare, but it's not trying to be, either. There were great lines!

Quote:
Barbossa: First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothin'. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the Pirate's Code to apply, and you're not. And thirdly, the Code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner.

Quote:
Elizabeth: Captain Barbossa , I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal .
Barbossa: There are a lot of long words in there, Miss; we're naught but humble pirates. What is it that you want?
Elizabeth: I want you to leave and never come back.
Barbossa: I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means "no".

Quote:
Will Turner: You cheated.
Jack Sparrow: Pirate!

Quote:
Jack Sparrow: [to Weatherby Swann] I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically.
Jack Sparrow: I want you to know that I was rooting for you. Know that.
[to Commodore Norrington]
Jack Sparrow: Elizabeth... it would never have worked between us darling. I'm sorry... Will... nice hat. Friends... This is the day that you will ALWAYS remember as the day that you...
[backs up and trips over ledge]

I agree with lahimatoa. The first movie wasn't exactly Oscar material, but it was certainly a high-quality movie. The directing was excellent (Gore Verbinski, natch), the script was decent, and lighting problems? Uh, I've seen the movie three times and never noticed a thing (and as a photographer I'm constantly noticing these things). It seems more likely to me that the theatre you watched it in had projection problems. Hollywood doesn't just let its multi-million-dollar blockbusters off the lot with something so easily corrected as "lighting problems."

Heh. I love that line.

Okay, last one:

Quote:
Will Turner: Where's Elizabeth?
Jack Sparrow: She's safe, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word really... except for, of course, Elizabeth, who is in fact, a woman.

Hehe!

I saw this recently, July 2nd, actually. It wasn't as great as I kept hearing it was, but it was good. I'll probably see the next two 9Assuming the 2nd will be as good as the first).

I'm not very interested. While I think everyone thinks Mr. Sparrow is a very nice pirate, I was never very impressed with the story of the first film.

But then again, everyone I know in my town loves this film except for me.

My brother and my father are going to see it, but I think I'll just wait for Tales from the Earthsea.

i think that jonny depp is an amazing actor. Orlando Bloom is one of the worst actors to ever walk this planet, but i thought that mr. depp did a great job. the other people who's names i dont know were pretty good too. i thought it was a great movie.

um... yeah, I really did love the first movie, the story, special effects, acting and everything was amazing, it's among my favorites. I will probably see this movie a few weeks from now (I don't like going to see anything popular on or close to opening night, toooo many people.)

Haha, I told my Orlando Bloom fangirl friend that he dies in the first 10 minutes of the movie...

I suggest trying it.

I saw it today, and I was in shock. I really admire the acting, especially Mr. Depp. It has to be fun to play Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Both movies are my all time favorite.

...so....you expect me to beleive that Disney has sweatshops? And you're boycotting them for inneudo that they probably don't even have*?

Orlando Bloom isn't too bad, either. Give him credit and be original for a change, whydontcha. At least he wasn't too prominently featured(and he broke nearly every bone in his body).

Anyways,the review, spoilers I guess:

This is probably my new favorite movie. I loved every second of it - right from the beginning all the way to the suprising end. Johnny Depp was really good as a pirate, as always, and so was everyone else. All of the scenes were great, especially:

- When Jack escapes from the cannibals
- All of the climax(yes, I consider every thing from when they land on the island to the when Jack cuffs himself part of the climax).
- The end.
- That really long swordfight that Jack backs out of.
- When the barrels explode.
- Uhh....did I mention everything else?

So, yeah, it was awesome. It looks like they are bringing back(huge spoiler wearning here) Barbossa. Didn't Barbossa die, though?

And if you want to criticize a movie, Magna Carta, see it and we'll see if you change your mind.

* As far as I'm concerned, that said SFX, and yes, there is some inneudo in their films, but none in the ones you're saying.

Okay, lemme give me my reasoning on why I don't like this movie (I already did, but this time I'm going more in-depth):
  • Horrible Acting - The acting was atrocious. 'nuff said. I've seen better acting from Tom Cruise. And we all know how bad he is! (And sorry, for the most part, I found Jonny Depp and Orlando Bloom the ugliest people I've ever seen. I'm glad Orlando only got a small portion of attention in Lord of the Rings, and even there, he was as bad as any other mediocre actor.)
  • Terrible Plot - Oh ,yes, that cliche "a bunch of dead pirates come back in skeletal form and haunt [s]themselves[/s] the Caribbean to death." I haven't heard of any original, unbiased, non-blasphemous story of a pirate. I would have rather watched a biography on Holy Roman Emporer Carlus Magnus (Charlemagne). ...oh but wait, he wasn't a pirate!
  • Bad lighting - For some reason, every place that "wasn't" a place of peace was lighted dark. While this gives a bit to the environment, you could still do such in daylight, except with ominous clouds looming over the city.
  • Film by Disney - Okay, I am an anti-Disney maniac. I am boycotting all of their films and products because of the lies and hypocrisy they display on us. On every film, be it animated or real-life, contains hidden innuendo. Anyone remember Lion King? Not only that, Disney is just in for the money: in California, police raided illegal sweatshops (yes, in California, not in Vietnam or Cambodia) which had hired children. All of these sweathshops were manufacturing the famous Disney Happy Meal toys that kids love to play with. Disney's evil, and I'm not supporting their mass-murdering of society as we know it.

...yeah, that's why. I'm probably going to receive a lot of comments stating that I'm just crazy and doesn't want to admit anything. Admit what?

Okay okay, I liked the movie, so I guess it's time to express my opinion of what you said.

A) Okay. Bloom sucked. We get it. No reason to condemn the movie because one actor was really really sucky. And I personally think that Depp did a great job acting over the top, for an over the top character. Just because it was outrageous doesn't mean it was bad. And really, who cares if Bloom and Depp are ugly? That doesn't prove ANY point at all. Why even bother mentioning it?

B) Um, okay? What if I were to tell you that you were wrong? Last pirate story I heard was a pirate who kept his wives heads in his basement. Nothing skeletal there. I have truly never heard of a spectral or skeletal before, except in Spongebob, which doesn't really count.

C) The night is as good a time as any. It adds to the effect and all. I mean, really, you think someone wouldn't sit up and take notice if a buncha pirates were duking it out in the middle of the day?

D) Not Disney's fault. Just because McDonalds hires little kids to make the toys doesn't put Disney at fault. Who's descision was it to hire them? McDonalds'. Disney just sold their liscence, unknowing of the sweatshops. And who cares if they're in it for the money? Everyone's in it for the money! That's the way this world operates. Also, I find the innuendo very funny.

There's another reason they wanted to use not too much daylight -I think they wanted to show as much of the Pirates having the curse as they could, seeing as they are only showing their skeletal selves when it's in the moonlight.

And they are pirates - you don't expect ANY inneudo references?

Saw it last night. I, for one, feel lucky to live on the same planet as Johnny Depp. And pirates.

The beginning is kind of "whuh?" and then it gets all "woah." And it continutes to increase in awesomeness from that point onward, until the end where you feel you might die from the awesomeness at any moment.

They need to make the third one. Now. Or else.
