Wow, this is amazing.

A paralyzed man using a new brain sensor has been able to move a computer cursor, open e-mail and control a robotic device simply by
thinking about doing it, a team of scientists said Wednesday.

Imagine the possibilities...

That's really awesome. I've heard of things like that before, I'm sure that we'll be hearing a lot more about all this during the next 20 or so years.

I remember people talking about years ago having this technology back in 2000. It's nice to see that it seems to be making some progress.

I actually did a report on this back in my freshman year, around 2003. I think I got an A...

Yeah, I heard a little bit about it here and there for a few years. By "hearing a lot more about this" I mean it will have developed a lot more. I don't think it will be used for the average person in my lifetime. But, it's hard to predict these things. Could come sooner than I think.

Automail. Does this mean I can have guns attached to my arms? 8-)

Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel or some such channel had a special about this sort of thing a couple weeks back...in addition to the dude who was able to operate a computer cursor with his brain, there was also talk about the growth of study towards moving robotic items such as fake limbs for paraplegics by using just the brain. What really interested me in the program, though, was the talk of having additional implants to modify the human, making one something of a cyborg. The first idea would be like having extra memory space stored in a chip in your brain, where data could be downloaded or uploaded (Johnny Mneumonic, anyone?). I must say, I'd really be interested in having all of that; considering how small text files are and how large computer hard drives are today, I could store thousands of volumes of information on subjects of interest such as philosophy, theology...and maybe even do a Matrix thing and store martial arts training.

We could have four arms if we needed to. Just stick two robotic ones to ourselves, and let the brain do the work. Cool.

Hey, if you can get a petri dish of rat brains to pilot an airplane, you can do anything.

I heard about this a while back. I'm not so hot on the idea of having a microprocessor in my brain (I like who I am without having to be part computer), but having four arms wouldn't be so bad. :P Me, I just like the fact that it gives a new hope for people with prosthetics.

I wonder, do they "feel" the prosthetic limbs?

Wow, that's freakin' sweet.

Am I the only one hoping they get thought-controlled video games up and running in my lifetime?

I'm really hoping for the knowledge-upload chip to come to fruition soon. Think about it: You get one installed, and then you pay a company say $500 for the Chinese language or complete knowledge of computer programming.

Gonna be sweet.

no, not extra robot features, remote robot features! that would be so awesome. you could have a robot controlled by your thought and get it to go and do tasks while you sit and watch it working.

Well, here's the thing: No one knows everything, and no one ever will.

And I'm with CT on this one...it's kinda weird having micro-chips in your brain or other weird cyborg stuff. Just be human. It seems kinda nice for people who need prosthetics, though.

Well, fine, Jimmie. You don't have to get the brain chip if you don't want to, but I'll be first in line.

I don't think it would make me any less human to be able to download information into my brain like in the Matrix.

The only concern I'd have with a brain chip would be things like the potential to spread computer viruses to our brains and what the result of an electric shock or EMP might do to a human with a brain chip.

Yeah. The thought of brain chip terrorism is pretty scary. Someone could put a mind-erase program into a language program and that would be that.

Of course, before anything like that were to ever become available, they'd have to ensure its complete safety and security. I imagine that, in the event of an EMP, only the chip would be affected.

At least, I hope so... ;)

I also agree with CT and Jimmie.

This is a very grand thing for those who need it, but I feel that we don't need to update ourselves with vanity things. Not to mention I also feel uncomfortable with any sort of metal object in my skin or my brain.

I'd much rather be natural thank you.

this isn't much unlike the question: would you put your brain in a robot?

Will the robot look like me? Will it be able to do all the things I can do and more? Does it have a longer lifespan than I do now?

If yes, then I would, when I got old and/or sick.

Boy, what a question. I'm afraid of dying, but I'm also afraid of living forever. So I have no idea what I do.

Reminds me of that game Too Human that's coming out... where you have to choose whether or not to cybernetically upgrade yourself... too bad that game sux, apparently.

Probably, but ask yourself this first... Who would give you a gun? Honestly, I wouldn't give you a gun. You'd probably search for Clan's adress, then track him.

All I need is an IP tracer and google earth.

Which is exactly why no one will trust you with a gun. Now all I need to do to avoid that though, is use several different computers, and use the one that isn't yours more.

I wouldn't even trust you with a butter knife. Although I wouldn't even trust me with a spoon.

Was that a reference to the 'butterknife of doom' I used to use in fanfictions ECT?

PM me the answer, as this needs TOASTPAINT.
