So, in the way of the Internet, I stumbled on to this very peculiar website.

Genpets

I've been browsing it up and down for the past, oh, I don't know, hour or so, trying to figure out if it's for real. If it's a hoax, it's an exceedingly elaborate hoax, but if it's true, it seems extremely unbelievable--and kinda creepy. Basically, this company claims to sell genetically engineered pets that are sort of like living dolls. I've been in every nook and cranny on the site I can find, but there isn't any sort of Bonsai Kitten-esque "We pwnd j00 punkz" written anywhere. It seems surprisingly legit. The press page even list specific articles in reliable sources about them. I tried looking for some of them online, but couldn't find any--which would normally scream "FAKE" at me. But then I did find the New York Times one by searching, though due to their policies, I couldn't access the full article online to see what it said. The creatures themselves look almost too plasticy to be real, but the store that claims to be selling them seems real. At this point in time, I have no idea what to think.

Thoughts?

They look fake to me, but I won't make any pronouncements of their fakeness yet, lest I look like a fool when they are revealed to be real.

If they are real, PETA ought to have a real blast, eh?

I'm not sure...it could be a bizzare Bonzai-Kittenesque fraud...I've seen other sites that have looked just as legitimately professional and still have been total hoaxes, for entertainment purposes. I was fooled into thinking that http://www.irobotnow.com was really going to supply androids, until I learned it was just a promotion for the (then upcoming) movie I-Robot (which stank, IMO), even though there's no mention of the film whatsoever on that site. There was one other site, too, that was designed to look like you could sell your very soul for personal gain--fame, wealth, supernatural abilities, etc. So I wouldn't rule it out as a hoax.

EDIT: Since Wiki didn't have the answer, I found that Snopes did. It's fake.

Awww, I was gonna post that link... :(

Personally, if they were real I wouldn't get one, just because, well, they're ugly. But, say, they engineered a tribble, or some kinda other cool/cute thing... Ja, I'd get one.

Ahh. I thought about looking at Snopes, but I had no idea where to check.

But that's a very interesting hoax. The artist wanted to provoke a reaction, and he definitely got one.

I think genetically engineered pets will probably become a reality within the next fifty years or so... initially as a toy for the rich, no doubt. I mean, the concepts are all sound... the only real hindrance would be a bunch of tree-huggers protesting it.

If those were real, I would never want to see one in real life. Ever. They're just so very creepy-looking!

I can tell, almost immediately, that this is 100%, Grade A hoax. It looks completely hoax-ish, and, to top it off, I heard about Genpets from an email "petition" to ban it. If I find any proof, I'll post it.

edit: OK, I found something... If you google Genpets, the 3rd link is to the snopes page that tells you it's a hoax. You didn't "research" it very much, did you?

Uuum.. I already posted proof...

Besides, I'm sure if someone was to actually make genetically engoneered pets, they would look... not horrible.

Oooh! How about a little Teh C. for a pet?

And yet, they're so ugly... they're kind of cute. Sort of the naked mole rate effect.

Honestly, Googling it never crossed my mind. Instead I went searching for the articles it mentioned on the site through places like EbscoHost.

If these WERE real, I'd have a fit.

There's enough animals in shelters for people to get a pet.

Pfftbah.

That looks like it's actually going to be a good Sci-fi Original series.
