You probably have some guitarist friends. You might be a guitarist yourself. There are a lot of guitar songs out there. But some have a knack for being catchy and easy to learn. What songs does everyone at your school/workplace/whatever know, no matter what. Riffs that everyone knows.

Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple, very catchy. Even a not even guitarist me can play it.

Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne. So simple, yet so awesome.

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. I bet everyone knows this.

Back in Black by AC/DC.

Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. A staple guitar song. You don't have to know the entire song, but the opening riff is necessary.

The outro to Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. That's as much Green Day as I'm exposed to among other guitar players. See! Even in real life I put up with more of this Green Day stuff.

What's my Age Again by Blink 182. A fun song.

Adam's Song by Blink 182. Possibly one of the most known riffs ever.

Carousel by Blink 182. That is such a beautiful song.

And I almost forgot Iron Man by Black Sabbath. I. Am. Iron Man

So... What songs does every guitarist need to know? Heard from you.

You know, I read your post the wrong way, and wrote for like an hour to prove that you were wrong. Then, when the post was finally ready to submit, I look back at your post, and saw what it actully said. Boy, do I feel like an idiot................................

For real beginners on any instrument, there's always the melody from One Note Samba...>> But what do I know--I'm just a pianist/saxophonist. Guitar is beyond me...though I tried picking up bass a couple times...

As far as I know, everyone can play Mary Ha A Little Lamb on every instrument, and possibly Ode to Joy.

The songs I can play on pretty much any instrument are the Lost Woods theme from OoT, Lowrider, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Chopsticks is easy, although I've forgotten it by now.

If there is a guitar or bass present in the room, some dork will HAVE to play Seven Nation Army. Come on, it's not even a good song, guys.

I think in this day and age the opening riff from Unholy Confessions is pretty standard issue for any guitarist serious or otherwise. I remember I went into Guitar Center one day with a friend and the second I walked in I was assaulted by 10 different versions of the song ranging from pretty good to "I just learned it yesterday".

Really. What artist is that that makes it?

What do you mean? Saying that not everyone knows those songs?

The first four bars of RHCP's Scar Tissue... back when I was at high school, nearly everyone with access to a guitar could play that...

I'm a keytarist. :P I think pretty much any simplistic riff, melody or anything can be played by anyone with even the slightest idea of playing the guitar, keyboard etc.

And anyone with significant talent can play just about anything after hearing it a few times.

"I'm Gonna Be" by The Proclaimers has 3 chords. E-A-B.

Some worship songs, like "Unashamed Love", "Meet With Me", and "I Want To Know You", have the same chord patterns throughout the entire song

Haha, I love that song. But it was the first song I learned to play, before I even knew what a pick was.

Seems like most people know the obligitory Blitzkrieg Bop. Everyone I know who plays the guitar knows Day Tripper.
