The cost of the shots might have been high, but didn't the article say that the meerkats had just been tested, and were awaiting results? Why couldn't the parents wait to see the results? Why did the animals have to be put down anyway? I still see no valid reason as to why the animals had to be killed.

And wouldn't a lot of that cost of the shots be covered by medical insurance, anyway?

The article says the only way to test the meerkats was to put them down.

Quote:
State Health Department rules mandate that exotic animals must be tested for rabies if a bite victim is not treated, said department spokesman Doug Schultz. "And the only way to test the animal is to put it down," he said.

As for it being covered by medical insurance, that may be true. But they might not have had enough insurance, or something. There are a lot of things that we don't know.

Animals aren't any lower than humans. It's better those carefree parents get a call from child services. Even if they did have rabies, killing them won't do anything, because she would still die. They could vaccine the kid and the meercats, and everything would be fine, but apparently the child rules the household. The reason parents are parents are for kids to learn, and be guided. The kid needed to learn, getting a shot is better than losing a life. They don't care for their kid, and apparently are blind, and stupid..

Ok, first off, i like animals, they have a right to live, but i am not so crazy that i would prefer that 5 meerkats live over a human being. You say that it is better that a little child is taken away from her parents that kill 5 little animals. Yes all this is a shame, but even if there was a slight possibility that i could have rabies i would also want that those animals be killed and tested to see if i needed the shots. You guys can call me heartless but they are just animals. You are saying that a little child should die because she did something stupid.

Hey, danger is nature's way of getting rid of stupid people. (That's why tornadoes attack trailer parks. o.o) Seriously, though, I do feel more of an instinctual "duty" to preserve my own species before I preserve others...but it's still a difficult dilemma, with a lot of factors and ethical questions involved. And thanks Acekirby for pointing out that part of the article--I obviously skimmed over that. My bad. :coachz:
