| Post subject: | Synaesthesia |
This thread stems from a Gabbly conversation I started. Synaesthesia is basically a mixing of the senses. A synaesthete may be able to taste colors, see sounds, or hear numbers. This condition can be caused when the various parts of the brain that would normally separate during development don't fully separate, resulting in those 2 senses being merged. Mixed Signals is a website all about synaesthesia; it includes a list of the various types. Myself, I have morphophonia, "shape, movement, and/or texture illicited from a sound". When I listen to music, I always see the band playing onstage in my head, no matter what band it is. Also, I always see some kind of abstract form and/or shape when I listen to sounds produced on a synthesizer. Snailmail has geusaphonia; he can taste sounds. To him, guitars taste like chocolate. That's the sole reason why he learned how to play guitar. I don't blame him.
So is anyone else a synaesthete? |

I think synaesthesia would be a dang cool thing to have. I can easily visualize sounds- and I know what they look like the instant I hear them- but I doubt it's the real thing because it's pretty uncommon. |

I think that would make you a synaesthete, MR. Do you automatically visualize those sounds? Is it different depending on what sounds or music you're listening to? |

Yes, I do, unless I'm thinking of a particular other thing while I'm listening to the sound. Similar sounds look similar but they vary a bit. |

Yep, that would be morphophonia, same as me.
Another thing about my case--when I hear an overdubbed vocal, like an Enya song, or the chorus of a song where the vocals are overdubbed, I see "clones" of that singer. I also have phonographemia; I hear voices when I read text. |

What about tasting sounds. I know we were talking about that, because I taste sounds. |

...Weird. The page telling you what kind you are makes no sense to me. |

I don't have any of that other crazy stuff, though. Like, I wouldn't say this forum smells green or tastes loud. |

That thing you described about seeing th band play when you hear music is what some people use to try to achieve perfect pitch. Except instead of what you said, for every different note they associate a colour with it. |

I remember someone telling me that they can see music in colours. I wish I could do that. (Sidenote........ Though this probably isn't related, for a while now I realised that I'm able to think two different thoughts at the same time. It's common enough maybe, but it's a bit strange. I wouldn't even realise that I'm doing it until it's over. I don't know what that would be called though.) |

Well, I hear my own voice in my head when I read text... that's not norma? I associate colors with what I see and hear, but I think that's pretty normal. It's usually not automatic, either. Same here, though I agree that that's probably a common thing. It might not be possible to only think one thoguht at a time, since your brain has to be built to deal with more than one thing at a time. Otherwise you couldn't move more than one muscle at a time, or breathe while thinking. |

Oh, here's something. It doesn't happen anymore, but when I was in elementary school my brain assigned colors and genders to numbers. I remember one time some boy in my class told me his favorite number was 7, and I wondered why his favorite was not only a female number but also a purple one. I did assume that everyone thought the same things about numbers as I did, too. |

The weird thing about that is, I can do that, but I can control it. For example, if I'm reading a Simpsons or Futurama comic, while I read, I can make all the voices in my head. But if I don't want to do this I don't. It's fun to do. The strange thing is, I can't replicate the sounds outloud. |

Wow, you all have the coolest brain disorders. Is there ever a downside? |

We got tested for it at my old school as part of this survey, but I don't have it. My friend Arisa does, though. Part of me wishes I did, though. It sounds kinda cool. I DO have Asperger's, but...that makes me share ANOTHER thing with Clan. Sad, no? |

I'm afraid I don't have any of those conditions. Though I do create images in my mind when I listen to music, I don't think that's a special condition. |

Sometimes I kind of combine colors and numbers, shapes and numbers, and colors and sounds. Like, a buzzard noize reminds me of a lightish brownish gray color, a ringing noise reminds me of gold, a high pitched noise reminds me of pink, and a lower pitched humming noise reminds me of red. And as for numbers, I think of the number line as an actual path with a shape, and whenever I think of a number I think of where it is on this 'path'. I thought I would be over that by 2nd grade, but I'm not... I can even draw the shape. That's about all I can think of. Oh, and I taste dead people |

I don't think I have synaesthesia. At least, I don't taste music or anything. Hey, Snailmail, I wanna know something: What does the Float Castle theme from Yoshi's Safari taste like? I've become addicted to that song lately. (Download it here and listen to track 13, or, if you don't have an SPC player, go here and download a MIDI. I don't think VGMusic allows direct linking to files, so you'll just have to search the page for it.) I'd ask what my music tastes like, but I don't want to be the self-promoting [bleep] of HRWiki. Not today, anyway. Nope.

Anyway, I have the same problem as Noidy here. Whenever I read a book and then listen to the movie/book on tape/cartoon, I always think the characters sound wrong.XD |

Huh. I've been trying to find a word that describes the ability to think two thoughts at the same time (^^^^refer to my and Ju Ju's posts above^^^^), but I couldn't find any on Wiki or anywhere else. Does anyone have any clue? |

I always figured synaesthesia was more commonly associated with LSD use. Speaking of LSD... |
