I really would enjoy Mars, Ceres, Jupiter. Ancient gods rock. But wouldn't Ceres be destroyed if it collided with another asteroid? :-|

On a serious note, I think the asteroid field is far less dense than it is portrayed in the movies. I suspect that if you were on Ceres, you wouldn't see any asteroids in the sky at all.

You would be correct!

The asteroid belt is pretty sparse. Actually, it's not so much a "place where there are a lot of asteroids" as it is "a place where you're more likely to find asteroids than other place in the solar system."

Hmm... There's something wrong when my first thought on hearing about the Plutons idea is "Man, this is totally going to screw with the credibility of Star Wars novels..."

Seriously, though, this is pretty cool. I like to write science fiction, and even the thought of two planets orbiting each other - whether it's approved or not in this case - gives me tons of new ideas. Not to mention that it's just cool to be alive for this kind of major thing.

I say the more planets the better. They need to name 2003 UB313 "Persephone," though. Definitely. It'd be perfect.

I don't know what they'd call its moon, though. They should call it "Pomegranate" or something.

Well, til next Tuesday, I'm a hurricane researcher and graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. My work was funded by NASA, though, since it used satellite data as an input into an intensity forecast model I run. I work in a building that's owned by UAH, NASA, National Weather Service, and a couple other organizations.
Even though I'm not in the space program, I work around a lot of people who are.

"Persephone" was a popular name among the astronomer community for 2003 UB313.

One tiny problem: they already gave the name a long time ago to some boring old asteroid.

The center of mass is between the two planets, not on either one of them. Also they discovered 2 moons of Pluto/Charon

Looks like after all that big astronomer talk, the planet formerly known as Pluto will have its status pulled after all:

Yeah, this is just gonna anger him. Though it's interesting that the planet named after him is the one that's causing so much trouble... ;)

That's too bad. Having eight planets isn't as cool as having nine, and defenitely not as cool as havign twelve. And didn't they say Chron and Pluto orbited around each other? WHy have they taken it out of consideration for a dwarf planet?

I'm interested to see how this develops, though, and find out more about those dwarf planets.

I'm still curious about Sedna though... it had an odd orbit, but wasn't it similar to a planet?

Well, you see how much respect they give the god of the underworld. How much respect do you think they're going to give a mere boatman? ;)

Anyway, I'm actually in favor of Charon being upgraded to "dwarf planet." C'mon, astronomers: if you're gonna downgrade Pluto, at least give us a cool binary dwarf planet system.

Hmm. Well, I don't really care what the definition of a planet is, long as the word "planet" finally has a standard definition. Personally, I was in favor of the "3 new ones" definition, but all is well anyway. Now to one-up StrongRad.

...that is almost exactaly how my astronomy teacher explained it...I am so scared.
