PMG is NOT a jerk - he's right. This is technically no more sad than the millions of people who die every day. At least Steve led a full, allbeit short, life. The real tragedy is that he was FAR too young to die (yes, 44 is young, especially in terms of death), and that he left a wife and two kids to mourn him. As for his exaggerated Aussie accent, it wouldn't shock me at all if he did that on purpose at the request of American producers who wanted to play up his foreign background and the stereotypes that accompany it. All in all, I'll have a cold one tonight in the Croc Hunter's honour. And to be fair, also for the millions who died today that went unnoticed. |

I think I was a bit callous with my earlier post. Like PMG said, we shouldn't get to emotional about this, millions die everyday, but I do feel sad for his family, and that he was too young to die. But I was getting sick of him messing with animals, but whatever. Sometimes I have narrow views. |

Thinking back, he probably did as least as much for wildlife as Jacques Cousteau and Jane Goodall. While other wildlife documentaries observed animals 500 yards away through a telefoto lens, he always got up-close and personal. Fierce snakes (the fierce snake being the most venomous snake on earth) couldn't get him, saltwater crocs couldn't get him, and in the end it was an incredibly unlikely freak accident that killed him. He shouldn't have died like that. Sure, just about everybody made fun of him, but I seriously doubt most of us would even know the fierce snake existed if Steve-o hadn't grabbed one by the tail and thrust in front of a camera lens. Few other TV personalities have the kind of enthusiasm Steve did, and I will miss him greatly. A memorial fund is being set up to donate money towards wildlife causes in Steve's memory, and it's being called the Crikey Fund. I think the man who made that word a household phrase would be honored. |

Just a quick note to StrongCanada and duecex2: Millions of people aren't dying every day--by my calculations of 3 deaths per second, that equates to only 259,200 deaths a day...just a little more than a quarter of a million people. It's still a large number, yes, but it's only roughly 0.00004% of the world's population (which is increasing with an approximate 5 births every second, meaning the population actually increases by 2 people per second...). Anyways, enough math: gouache that heated bread! |

Man, I keep wishing that I'd hear the news that Steve somehow survived the freak accident. I miss him so much.

Aw man, I loved that guy as a kid. He made me want to be an environmentalist. Rock on man, I hope you wrestle Crocs in heaven. (Or maybe he's in Hell wrestling the devil, and now he's the ruler of the underworld) The thing is, he could wrestle crocs, pick up the world's most deadliest snakes, and other dangerous stuff, and yet he was killed by an almost harmless creature. Tragic. |

Geez. In recorded history only 17 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED BY STINGRAYS. 17!!! Now what are the odds of this happening to him? Like...one in a bagazillion. It seems almost.....unreal, ya know? I wasn't sure if it was even POSSIBLE for Steve Irwin died. |

Gidley: I apologize for calling you a jerk, as I understand your argument now. However, as for those 3 people per second that die, you don't know who they are, and most of them haven't accomplished much for science/literature/conservation/whatever, so your condolences aren't expected or needed. Since you know about it, though, you should at least, even if you hated the guy, feel sorry for the family. (I'm saying the family because, try as you might, nobody's going to care about your condolences if they're corpses.) And as for the chances of Steve dying at that particular moment in time, taking the statistics into hand as well as what else he did for a living, the chances were probably significantly less that he would die than if he were, say, taking a shower. I suppose that if you're superstitious, you could say that the extraordinarily good luck he had had was, in effect, bad karma. But I choose to say that it was just very improbable, oh well. |

I don't think his death has still fully registered to me. One of the saddest things I think was something he said on one of the reruns they're showing right now... that he one day be able to retire by passing his job onto his children like his father did, and that that would be the proudest moment of his life... he never got to reach that. I guess he never expected to die early either, even with his dangerous job. 
I am curious what will the children grow up to be, expecially 2-year-old Robert. |

Steve was making a documantary at the time, and the stingray stabbed him in the chest and pulled his heart out. That's why you can't see the footage. Steve Irwin was a great man, especially off screen. he visited schools and didn't shun people just because he was famous. He treated everyone equally and always listened to what everyone had to say. He was like that friend we all have who's just fun to hang around with and talk to. He was an idol, and we will all miss him. |

Yeah, I was saying that Steve pulled the barb out. Any way, a poll in a newspaper asked if "you think the death video should go public." 50% said yes. I feel really bad about saying this, but I would. I know about it "being someone dying" but it would be interesting to see a visual perspective. It is, though, a video I would feel HORRIBLE about watching. |

Steve Irwin was a great man! He may look foolish and stupid at times (like when he dangled his son by a croc) but he knew what he was doing! All he took were caculated risks, and this was just a freak accident. I'm gonna miss Steve.. |
