I was in 3rd grade, and I had turned on the TV to watch Spongebob. It just happened to be on the news channel, and right when the second plane crashed. I was one of them "destruction fanatics" at that age (along with many people in my class), and here's something I regret: I said "cool."

After I realized what actually happened, I was devestated. To this day, I still feel guilty for saying that one word.

We just watched a 9/11 video in class today. It was originally a documentary on a firemen, then turned into a documentary leading up to 9/11. It was very emotional.

This is a day we shall not forget.

Um, I was just commenting on my preluding third grade experience. If you'll notice, I put emphasis the fact that the Mets lost the subway series....

September 11 has become a day of sober reflection, but I'd like to remind folks that there are a few other days worthy of equal consideration. Just because the events that inspired Veteran's Day (November 11) and Pearl Harbor Day (December 7) happened long before most of us were born doesn't mean they are no longer relevant...and that's just to name two. Then there's Memorial Day, which is one of the single most undermined holidays we have in terms of its real meaning.

I know some of you observe these days -- largely those of you with veterans in the family -- but a reminder couldn't hurt.

this thread makes me feel guilty.
i mean, everybody all over your country were terrified. kids were sent home from school early, who lived at the opposite end of the country. people were fearing their lives, and all the way over here, some people didn't even know what happened.
a week later, some kids were saying the Sydney Opera House was bombed, and they're coming this way.

Personally, I didn't really care if everyone else cared so excessivley much....I remember our teacher read us some book these little kids who live in some southern state wrote. They were all happy because they got over 9/11 or whatever. It just didn't feel helpful or anything at all.....


I know other memorial days are important, it's 9/11 always feels very close to me, because I live in the city, and have for my whole life. The twin towers were something I knew were there, and just always had been there. They were really just a given for me. Change to my city or anything else can be pretty hard for me.

over here (new zealand) it happened in the middle of the night and by the time we heard it was the morning of the 12th. i remember getting up and everyone was watching tv in the kitchen which wass unusual, coz normally mum outlaws morning tv. i looked at the tv and the first clip i saw was one of the towers falling over. i was like "what the heck?" i'd never even heard of the world trade center, or even terrorists before, so it came as a complete suprise to me. at school we didnt do any work at all we just watched the news for the whole day. it certainly changed my perspective on the world. up til then i hadnt thought about other countries at all really, except in encyclopedias and stuff, but on that day i began to figure all the countries interact with each other and etc.

This is so sad.. watching this made me go the closest i have ever come to crying just from watching something

You know, it's something that happened fairly recently. Five years ago. I don't think ANYBODY is going to care anymore in fifty years, except the people who lost friends or relatives. I don't understand why we make such a big deal out of this anniversary, anyway- there are hundreds of tragic things that have happened in American history that most of us pay no mind to.

I am going to have to disagree with you there. There will be many long lasting effects of this that will be felt 50 years down the line. I'll give you am examples what I mean. Take the Attack on Pearl Harbor. After the attack on Pearl Harbor we went into WW2 and we won. WW2 turned us into a Superpower and allowed us to strtch our influence around the world. Pearl Harbor happened almost 65 years ago, and we are still feeling the effects to this day.

I can guarantee that in 65 years we will still be feeling the effects of 9/11.
