The word "cacodemon" just sounds cool. Those are in doom right? κακοδαίμων. It had some cathartic guns to fire too.

Doom was cool. Quake was superior to me, though.

I finished Doom 2 on Saturday and started playing the Evilution mission pack.

Oh, and if you know of a good mod, post a link! :)

I've played Doom3, and a bit of doom 1 at a freinds house.

...It seems to me like it's just a generic FPS shooter that doesn't really do anything interesting.

Doom (1 and 2) practically defined the FPS genre. They may be boring nowadays, but they were the height of cool in their time.

Kids these days don't understand what an important game Doom is in the history of FPS and gaming in general. Yes, there was Wolfenstein 3d (and a few others, actually) before it, but it was Doom that kicked life in to the genre and started the boom. Later on, more FPS games started to appear rapidly - games like Duke Nukem 3d, Quake (also made by id Software), Heretic, Hexen, System Shock etc.

If you compare today's Unreal Tournament, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metroid: Prime or anything to Doom, of course it looks mediocre; you just run, shoot, pick keycards, push buttons and enter the next level. But, Doom is a milestone in FPS games and the genre would look very different - maybe even worse - today, had there not been Doom.

It has an important place in the history of mods too:
Wikipedia article on Doom wrote:
The ability to create custom levels and otherwise modify the game, in the form of custom WAD files, turned out to be a particularly popular aspect of Doom. Gaining the first large mod-making community, Doom affected the culture surrounding first-person shooters, and also the industry. Several to-be professional game designers started their careers making Doom WADs as a hobby, among them Tim Willits, who later became the lead designer at id Software.

Doom 3, on the other hand, failed in several aspects. While it had state-of-the-art graphics, the gameplay hadn't really changed since the mid-90's: Run, shoot, keycard, buttons, next level.

heres a Utility to use to make your own Doom Wads, it takes a while to learn, but when you do you can make as complicated and intricate maps as i and many others from the 90's.

Doom Builder
The best Wads of the last Ten Years.
one of my Favorite Wads.
and zDoom, the best Doom Source port.

Yes, but Wolfenstein3D wasnt as big as doom, because Wolfenstein lacked several things that doom had, such as Ambiant lighting, better sound, and was alot easier to understand.

Wolfenstein lacked those things because the technology didn't exist. Still, Wolfenstein is probably the game that kicked off the FPS genre. I remember thinking that, the first time I played Doom, I felt like it didn't match up to Spear of Destiny.

You could try Google or Home of the Underdogs, I'm sure you can find something there.
Basically, it's like Doom, only you're fighting Nazis and various supernatural monster type things. It contains a really good (for its time) 3-D engine.

Not really. Like I said, it's not a complex game gameplay-wise compared to today's FPS games. But saying Doom sucks because of it's nature is like saying Space Invaders sucks because it's just a pointless shoot 'em up or Pac-Man sucks because all you do is eat a bunch of pills while trying to avoid some colorful ghosts.

I never said that Doom sucks, I said it was generic.

And Pac-man Rules, Although Ms.Pac-man and Pac-Jr. are better.

As far as I know, that's still copyrighted material and hasn't been freely released.

Me. And other enthusiasts, I'm sure.

I've actually lost my original Ultimate Doom CD (and the box). :( Must've borrowed it a long time ago to some dumbwad who never returns stuff...

Hey, we should all make a WAD together! Maybe even with additional music and graphics.

The easiest way to play a custom WAD in Win XP is to use a source port like ZDoom. But then again, you do need either DOOM.WAD or DOOM2.WAD (or one of the Final Doom WADs), depending on which one is used (DOOM2.WAD seems to be more popular).

I usually just drag and drop a WAD on zdoom.exe.

All the data ("Where's All the Data?"). :)

So yes, pretty much anything from custom levels to custom graphics, sounds, music etc.
Doom Builder is an excellent level editor, while I find XWE (Extendable WAD Editor) a great tool for just generally editing WADs.

There seems to be a lot of musicians and graphicians on this board and some of us have even made levels before. Anyone interested?

I know what WAD stands for. How would the WAD be unique to us, if possible?

Author:  J-Man [ Fri Sep 22, 2006 5:54 pm ]
Post subject:

I'm talking about putting together our own levels, plus adding some new music, sounds and maybe even new graphics. It could use Doom 2's WAD as the core for all the stuff that already exists.

It's actually basically just about replacing some of the existing stuff with our own stuff -> our own WAD.
