Hey does anyone want to share their favorite Edgar Martinez story on this board?
Because this is Edgar's last weekend in the big leagues, and boy I'm gonna miss that guy.
No question, the best Designated Hitter ever in baseball, and one of the most classiest individuals ever.
I for one feel so privleged that I live in Seattle, I get to watch my favorite team play in one of the best ballparks on earth, and see Edgar play for 10-15 years.
My 2 favorite Edgar moments, pretty easy, and I was in the upper deck in right field at the Kingdome with my dad for both moments.
My second favorite was in Game 4 of the 1995 American League Division Series against the New York Yankees, October 7, 1995. The Mariners were down 5-0 in the game, and in this best of five series they were done 2 games to 1 when Edgar hit a 3 run homer to bring them back in the game. Then in the bottom of the 8th with the game tied at 6, bases loaded, Edgar hit the grandest of all grand slams. He hit it over the center field wall, and hit the middle of the blue certain below the bleachers at the Kingdome. The place erupted in noise and fireworks, and Edgar pumped his right fist up in the air.
Then my all-time favorite Edgar moment had to be in Game 5 the next night. I remember it like it was yesterday. October 8, 1995. In the Top of the 11th Inning in a 4-4 game, which had gone back and forth all evening, Randy Velarde hit a single for the Yankees to put them up by 1, and maybe seal the M's fate. Cause remember, that was a do-or-die game. So they got to the Bottom of the 11th and Joey Cora led off with a perfect drag bunt down the 1st base line, Don Mattingly the Yankee first baseman dove and tried to tag Cora but MISSED him! Then Ken Griffey Jr. hits this hard ground ball up the middle for a single, and Cora advances to third.
Then Edgar comes up, I'll admit, I can still hear those chants of "ED-GAR!" ringing in my head sometimes. They chanted that and "MVP!"
He was facing Jack McDowell whom he struck out against in the 9th. Edgar took a first pitch strike, and then hits a solid line drive down the left field line. Everyone is on their feet now and going nuts. Cora scored easily, and Griffey was running faster than an Olympic sprinter, and the relay from left field to home plate came in late. Baseball was saved in Seattle as the M's won 3 do-or-die games in 72 hours that weekend, and the spirit of the celebration was in the air in and out of the Kingdome that night.
Fireworks went off, music blared over the loud speakers, everyone cheered, some had confetti, and as you got outside that building, everyone was still cheering, cars were honking their horns, and if not for the police, everyone would've ran out on the street and killed themselves.
We never got to the World Series that year, or any with Edgar Martinez in a Mariners uniform, but I'll never forget that moment, let alone October 1995, as long as I live. I'll never forget what happened, where I was, what I was doing, and what it eventually brought to myself, Seattle, and the Mariners themselves.
Thank you Edgar for the memories from all of us Mariners and baseball fans at the Homestar Wiki board, and "ROCK, ROCK ON!" in retirement.
