No, I'm not anti-religion. I'm just not very impressed with the Catholic Church's track record in Ireland, and I DO NOT want to see them regain their former power.

The reasons are many, but the main two reasons would be their *ahem* "care" of orphans and other vulnerable children, and their enslavement(*) of unmarried mothers in the Magdalen Laundries.

And then there's their stifling of Irish intellectual life with their literary censorship campaign, and their overwhelming influence on policies on family planning, education, and the treatment of Protestants in the Republic.(**)

* Nope, that's not too strong a word.

** They ensured that a law was passed that if a Protestant and a Catholic married, their children would have to be raised Catholic.

But toastpaint.

I agree that it's more cost-efficient and a lot more reliable to work than contreceptives, but what I DON'T believe in is the uber-zealous types who refuse to allow their children to be taught about how the body works. I believe in education and learning the truth instead of covering it up (like Sally Field's character on that one episode of King of the Hill who said that people who have sex just up and die from it automatically). Children should learn to respect the natural body and the profound emotional and psychological effects of sexual intercourse as well as the physical effects...but instead, I see parents more willing to just leave their children ignorant and afraid of sex, which is wrong.

In the Irish Government they have written legislation that keep matters of Church and State separate. They use secular based thoughts, not religious.
You know, sometimes we can use that here too....

And WHF, I can see what you mean about the Catholic Church's power still residing in Ireland. The kids would have to be Catholic? Even if both parents decide to raise them Prostestant?

As far as I know, it's the same here in the US. It's not a "law" but for some reason I want to think that if you marry in a Catholic church, you have to raise your kids Catholic.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. If anything, America's more Protestant, rather than Catholic. This has got me wondering though, since my oldest brother is Catholic, and his wife is Protestant.

But now we're getting off subject, so I'ma go pull out an old time classic....Image

Whatever, Magna. I've seen you're so-called "information," and it's all bull.

The biggest proof that you're wrong, Magna, is that you're actually alive and able to type on the computer. Without sex, believe me, things would be quite a bit different.

Those of us who know you from Gabbly are already sick of your anti-sexual rantings, so I'm going to suggest you stuff it now and stick with the primary topic.

Please, by all means, present this information.. Better yet, clarify what you said here. I'm kinda confused, and, if I'm reading it correctly, it seems that you are, too.

Well I'm not going to detail, as I was asked not to by Didymus, and I will respect what the moderators and admins tell me. However, I was asking for those who had insisted that sexual activity was a healthy practise and a physical bonding between two people to prove their point with some information.

Ok, I'll bite.

Well, sexual activity is necessary to the continuation of the species. Without it, we would not be here. Any activity that contributes to the continuation of a species is more than likely healthy for that species, no?

As for the "physical bond" thing, well, sexual activity requires physical contact (to some degree), that seems to be pretty physical.
My guess is that you meant "emotional" instead of "physical". In that case, sometimes, you WOULD be right. There are people who are able to abstract the physical effects of sex from the emotional effects, but to be completely honest, I never understood how that was possible.

OK... but since I'm lazy I'll let someone else do it for me:

- Improved sense of smell
- Reduced risk of heart disease
- Weight loss, overall fitness
- Reduced depression
- Pain-relief
- Less-frequent colds and flu
- Better bladder control
- Better teeth
- A happier prostate

What about STDs, HIV, and unwanted pregnancy? Let's not forget committed relationships.

Yes, those are side effects, but to say that sexual activity is unhealthy and not needed as Magna Carta was putting it is completely wrong. It'd be like saying that driving someone to the hospital because they're having a heart attack is a bad idea because you might get into a car accident.

Good point.

I do think there is a right time and place for sex, though. It's not something you should just do willy-nilly, whenever you want. God made sex special.
