Yeah, but the point is they fight evil with magic. Which is evil. Get it?

Stupid, I know. But not everyone is blessed with two brain halves.

yeah... Mary Poppins used magic. I'm yet to hear a complaint about her, or even the fact that Hansel and Gretl were going to be cooked in ovens. Hansel and Gretl is a children's tale, too, and JK Rowling has even specified Harry Potter is not for young children...

These people are selectively insane. At least be consistently closed-minded.

Depends on what you mean by "catholic." Time was when the term meant something like "universal" or "all Christians everywhere." But at some point in history, the Greek and the Roman Christians split up, and each adapted the term to mean their own sect. Nowadays, it means mostly "Roman Catholic," but the ancient creeds still use the term to mean "all Christians everywhere." So remember that the next time you recite the Nicene or Apostle's Creed.

Back on topic: if Harry Potter is evil, then so is "Bewitched" and "The Flintstones" (cause of that little green dude who had magic powers). I haven't read the HP series, so I can't really comment. But I love Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS and Lewis' THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. And I play D&D (well, when I can find a game, anyway, which isn't too often these days). AND I happen to be a Christian minister, as well.

Personally, I think the LEFT BEHIND series is just as bad: mediocre fiction filled with poor theology passing itself off to be prophetic literature.

I've never seen an episode of the Flintstones with the little green guy, but isn't he meant to be an alien?

First off, the Harry Potter books are better written than a LOT of other stuff I've read. I'm somewhat irked by the dismissive "it's filled with fluff" statement made by some here, if just because it implies that the books are no good... harmless, but no good. Yes, they're entertainment, but the farther you go, the deeper the writing gets. I wouldn't classify book 5 a kids book, myself.

Next, Harry Potter in no way promotes satan worship. Just because something discusses "dark magic" does not mean it endorses it. J.K. Rowling doesn't, however, go to extremes to vilify the Malfoys (or others involved in dark magic)... she just portrays them as they are: those who chose another path.

The article posted earlier is a ridiculous example of the extreme Christian right demonizing something through creating symbolism that does not exist. Most people who have opposed HP haven't ever even read one of the books. Sad.

Ah, the Potter debates.

I really really really disagreed with some of the leadership at a church I attended at one time.

They said "Harry Potter is bad, it has to do with witchcraft and sorcery, therefore it's EVIL." or something like that.

At this point, I bring up the fact that the Lord of the Rings is heavily steeped in Magic, yet it was written by a man who was C.S. Lewis' protege. (C.S. Lewis was a revolutionary Christian theologian who also wrote the Chronicles of Narnia). I also asked them if they had even read the book? They hadn't of course. So I did. All of 'em. Good books, by the by.

Here's my opinion:

Harry Pooter = Not Evil.

It's fiction. Fiction is not fact...ion. Or luncheon.

I don't know if I'd let my 5 year old kids read it (not that I have any kids), but for someone who's old enough to really believe what they believe, and someone who realized the difference between fantasy and reality should be just fine reading a nice piece of youth-directed fiction.

Now is MAGIC itself necessarily evil? That's something we're working on right now.

:P

{EDIT}Lahimitoa, I'd like to point out the fact that not all Christians are monkey butted right wingists who want to take over the world. They're just the ones you see because the bad ones tend to stand out a little more.{/EDIT}

Knowing lahimatoa's background (seeing as I went to high school with him), I would assume that he knows that... :)

Edit... Sheesh I am sure getting on you today... sorry about that seethrough :eekdance:

Meh, don't worry about it.

I just get sick of hearing about the "Christian Right Takeover" crap.

I need to think before I type, I suppose.

I think that Harry Potter should be banned, along with any story or book that in any way insinuates the "m" word (magic).... j/k

Jeez, the stupid behavior that people are driven to by religion sometimes... it's not as though children are being forced to read this stuff, and well, if your kids are old enought to understand the freakin' books and actually believe it's real, well, they need to be smacked. Hard.

Obviously there is nothing wrong with Harry Potter.

It's just a harmless fantasy book.

Interesting story, though. I have a friend whose cousins aren't allowed to visit her anymore because she has Harry Potter and Star Wars posters on her bedroom door.

I'd like to know what's wrong with Star Wars.

The prequels aren't nearly as good as the originals. AND the remastered versions of the originals aren't as good as the original originals. Jar-Jar Binks is like a total nerve pinch in the posterior region. Shall I continue?

Well, I was kinda thinking more along the lines of, what possible religious objections they could have to Star Wars, of all things.

who doesn't like Yoda?

Harry Potter is not sataninc its a freaking child's story. This came from the same bible-thumping nut-jobs that said Tinky-winky and SpongeBob were gay.

I have to send this thread to my aunt. Look, every aspect in life needs to have problems in it, even in books. Otherwise, we'd be reading "Dick and Jane" all day. Opposition in all things people... And anyway, the good triumphs over evil! WHAT'S SATANIC ABOUT THAT?!?

Why? Does she think HP is evil? Or would she find it hilarious?

But HP is evil. I mean, first they create the most reliable ink jet printers on the market, but then they make very unreliable PC's. I mean, HP may not be quite as evil as MS (nothing is as evil as MS), but it is certainly much more evil than Dell or Gateway. Moral of the Story: buy HP ink jet printers, but not HP PC's.

Oh, come on. Everyone knows Tinky Winky's gay. And I wouldn't be surprised if Spongebob came out of the closet...

Vaguely on-topic, what about the His Dark Materials trilogy? Are they banned in libraries throughout America? Because if they're not, it's another clear example of hypocrisy. I mean, not only are the books written for children, they also endorse a much more traditional form of witchcraft (they do a pagan spell at one point) and make the claim that God is a senile old codger who was defeated and replaced by one of his evil angels.

Meanwhile, in Harry Potter... they drink pumpkin juice and play Quidditch. These are the books that are attracting controversy.

Seriously... On neither of those shows does anyone either have sex or date or anything... So how exactly are they gay?

Besides... How the heck does anyone even know that Tinky-Winky's a guy?

And Sponges reproduce by budding... Spongebob even did that once in a an episode, so I don't think that he's gay. Maybe meterosexual, but not gay.
