This reminds me of The Barney Fun Page (um, disturbing pixelated violence warning?), which I remember as one of the very first web sites I bookmarked back in 1996 or 1997.

Gah! That's creepy, out of date and a fun waste of time! What's it with all the "Barney is Evil" stuff? Educational TV may seem stupid to smart people, but to them babies, it's like going to highschool! What's really bad is educational TV without the education. Like this:

I think Modestly Hot Dude came up with this topic, thinking that it would be more controversial than it ended up being. There's a few ultra-right Fundamentalist groups that make that claim, but I'm not an ultra-right fundamentalist, so I fail to see why it's important. Plus I'm a big fan of mythology and fantasy fiction, so I can't exactly call the kettle black, anyway.

It ain't satanic, but it's comin' closer than it should for a "kids" book. Rowling does site real people that practiced witchcraft, alchamy, etc. Such as Nicolas Flamel (Prof. Dubles' alchamy buddy). Nicholas Flamel was a French alchemist that lived during the 1300s. He allegedly created the philosepher's stone(not a typo), as is recorded in historical documents and Wiccan lore. The stone allegedly created the Elixer of Life, which allowed him not to die. In the book he is 665 years old. This subtracted by 1991/1992(when it was being written by Rowling) is 1326/1327 for Flamel's birth. In real life he was born in 1330 give or take. Also in the book, his wife's name is Perenelle (also Petronelle), the same in real life. Coincedince? I think not. (by the way I can site all of these claims)

I was going to post a comment about the age of Nicholas Flamel. I also think that the books are not satanic but have their moments such as this that could hint otherwise.

But then he would have been the same age as Barney. And we ALL know the deal with him! (remember: CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR = 666).

Well, you could always wait a year for his next birthday.

According to Wikipedia: "Flamel was mentioned as being six-hundred and sixty-five at the time of the first book, but Nicolas Flamel was a real historical figure and wouldn't have reached that age until 1996."

I THOUGHT THAT DEVIL-DINO WAS HIDING SOMETHING! Anyway, it's give-and-take within a few years,(the guy's about six-and-a-half cent. old so give old flamey a break for not being able to remember his exact b-day will ya? :) ) the date is basically right. It's still erie if its only off by 4 years. It' s doubtfull that it wasn't on purpose.

That site is just looking for things that are clearly not there. I'm a Christian and I don't think that if a writer uses say: a unicorn in their story, that they are necessarily using it to encourage readers into the new-age or pagan religions, they may just want to use the unicorn in their story because it's an interesting creature. I don't think authors think that deeply about these things...

It all comes down to teaching kids/readers the difference between FICTION and NON-FICTION. It's the same problem that's plagueing (sp?) The DaVinci Code. A few people have misrepresented these books and now there are many who think that it's all for evil purposes, when the authors simply wanted to tell a story. I love the Harry Potter series AND I am a Christian. I am going to be one of those nerds who waits in line on July 16th for my copy of the next book (I am not putting down nerds - I openly admit that I am one)!

I don't think Harry Potter is a bad read, but there a number of places that make me uncomfortable as a Christian. Overall though I don't see why everyone is making such a fuss! Can't they see Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is a far greater threat to spreading God's Word?

The thing is, that I have a friend who believed the Harry Potter books were Satanic, but he loved the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Go figure.

Assuming you're asking mods to lock this topic, that's enough of that.

Sorry, gotta jump in here. I read that hunk of crap for kicks and this sentence literally made me laugh.

Quote:
The little girl writes Potter a poem: His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad, He is truly divine, the hero who conquered the dark(sic) lord.

That little (sic) kills me. As if suggesting that the author made a mistake in calling this lord dark. Anyway, I read Harry Potter. I like them. I'm not a witch nor do I believe such magical powers are real. I started reading these when I was 11 so I'm completely against the thought that only a teen could "be kept from swaying to the dark side." I do happen to know TONS of people who are deathly afraid of Harry Potter and its horrible occult undertones. *snicker*

I am currently reading the Harry Potter series. I think they're cute. Not quite on par with The Lord of the Rings, but decent.

Yes, there is some occultic imagery there. But hey, they're supposed to be traditional Halloween style witches, like on Bewitched. I do not think the books glorify pagan gods or anything like that, which is what the Bible refers to when it speaks of witchcraft. Nor does the author seem to propagate a pagan worldview. It's just something fun to read.

But if people are upset about Harry Potter, they should consider The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, both of which contain occultic and pagan imagery, and both of them written by devout Christian men.

Welcome back Diddy.

I didn't know that J.R.R Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were devout Christians. It kind of wierd, a devout Christian writing a book that is set in a pagan world.
