We weren't in Vietnam and Korea forever. We pulled out because what we were doing to "help" wasn't working.

Actually, with Korea, we didn't pull out, North and South Korea reached a ceasefire. Besides, it was an UN operation, while Vietnam wasn't.

But we went in there and didn't help much. Same with 'Nam.

You're thinking of bin Laden.

No, I'm not. I'm thinking of someone we caught. I just can't remember who it was.

Maybe that there Al-Zarqawi (prolly spelled that wrong) that got bomb'd.

Man, I bet there's going to be so much retaliation after he's hung...

Actually, he's going to be HANGED, not HUNG. For some reason, when referring to hanging as a form of execution/murder/suicide/whatever, the correct past-tense term is "hanged". However, you wouldn't say, for example, that you "hanged" an ornament on the Christmas tree--you'd say you "HUNG" it. Confusing, no?

...Sorry, I'm just nitpicky. Like, we saw this play on a field trip and they REPEATEDLY said "hung" instead of "hanged" when referring to someone being killed by hanging. And I kept saying "HANGED!" when they said it.

Now, toastpaint.

Actually, the people who're causing most of the troubles over there, the Shiites, will more than likely celebrate. The Shiites hate him because of the horrible things he did to them when he was in power.

Personally, I'm beginning to think it'd be better to just put him back into power and make sure we keep him on a tight leash.

Wait - it's the Sunnis who are causing mayhem, isn't it? At least, I can only think of al-Sadr's crowd as being any problem on the Shiite side - but definately not as bad as al-Qaeda. I may be missing something.

I might be wrong, but I've often heard that Al-Sadr's crowd is the biggest threat to a free and democratic Iraq (unless we let Iran help them rebuild, then I see Ahmadinejad making Al-Sadr look like the freaking pope).

From the things I've heard (sound bites from Fox, CNN, CBS, BBC, and the local news), it seems like there's a general feeling that, if Al-Sadr can be talked into not being such a jerk, the rest of the insurgency will die off pretty quickly.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to put this, but...

Is there a Democrat plan for Iraq that isn't "Oppose what Bush wants to do"?

I really want to know.

Thank you.

Yeah, and I can some it up in four letter, GTFO.

Cut and run? Leave the Iraqis to suffer the same fate they were in under Saddam? Condemn thousands of Sunnis to death?

Sounds good to me. Why won't the Democrats cut the funding for the war then? They have the power to, and that would end our involvement over there.

I'm gonna pee on this fire before it burns down the forest.

Lahi was right in asking this (but seriously needs to word it in a less flamebait way).
"GTFO" is seriously dramatic for someone who wanted to close R&P because of the drama it causes.

Now, you've got something to agree with. You both hate me. Work from there.

I don't hate you, StrongRad. I fail to see how my question was flamebait in any way. The Democrats have not proposed any plan of their own, and prefer instead to merely oppose anything Bush wants to do. Stay the course? NO. Troop surge? NO.

This is accurate and not even the most hardcore Democrats refute the facts. I'd just like to be notified when they come up with a strategy of their own.

Yeah, but that place is heading for a civil war, if it isn't already there, and our presence isn't helping anything. This is something that we cannot stop. All I am seeing over there is Vietnam: Desert Edition. We need to save face and get out.

Again, sounds good to me, BTG.

Why won't the Democrats head in that direction, then? Cutting funding for the war entirely will ensure our withdrawal within the month.

I do see what you're saying and agree. Politicians should take stands on issues and work for them. "Not-that-guy's-position" is not a real position, but because of disagreements in the Democratic party, congressional leadership can't muster anything except "NO" on anything. That's as sad a failure as the war has been.
