Well, he did forge the prescriptions, which right there is a crime. But to have that many pills? I mean, look at the bottom.

Quote:
But Andringa says Paey couldn’t possibly have taken all of the pills he obtained — an amount that would require him to consume 25 pills a day.

"One pill every hour, every day, for two years, with assuming he didn't sleep. If he slept for any period of time during that two-year period, he'd have to take more," he says.

And if he was taking that many pills a day, he needs to be in a rehab clinic.

I smell a pusher.

but he's a victim of the evil conservatives and their crackdown on addicts!! The article said so!!!

Please.. He broke the law, and his excuse of wanting to make sure he had enough is laughable at best.

If the man is breaking the law and selling these meds, then he needs to be harshly punished for feeding addicts. If he's the addict, then his crimes need to be punished AND he needs to be treated.

This reminds me of a story I saw in the Rocky Mountain News today. A man terminally ill with lymphoma has to take lots of painkillers, including morphine, marijuana, and OxyContin. He has a license for the medical marijuana, but he was arrested for having an expired license--then the police wouldn't allow him to take his meds in jail. As a result, he suffered from seizures and immense pain. Now he's suing the City of Denver.

In that case, Ian, I do feel that the city was in the right. He had and expired license. If you drive on an expired license, you face severe charges. In all fairness it should apply here, too.
They did not allow him to bring his medication into prison because there are laws against possession of controlled substances in prisons. The prisons have horrible drug problems, so allowing someone to bring in drugs would be counterproductive to stopping those problems. My guess is that they were afraid that he would either sell his medications OR someone would extort them from him with threats of violence or offers of protection.
They did go overboard, yes, but I can see their logic.

At least he was only in prison for 24 hours. But after the judge let him go, a deputy sheriff ended up detaining him for another eight hours, but still without his medications.

I still think cancer patients should be able to keep their medications in jail as long as they're not in contact with anyone else; Thomason was in a cell with two other inmates.

Maybe if people didn't break the law, they wouldn't have these problems.

I dunno, just some crazy idea of mine.

Why is it that everyone here has somewhat of a vendetta against Smokers and addicts?

Maybe it's because of this.

I got nothing against smokers. I only have a problem with smokers who portray themselves as victims and expect special treatment. Most smokers don't, and I have no problem with them.

As for addicts, I have nothing against them. I DO have a vendetta against crimes committed by addicts. As I said above, he should be punished for his crimes AND get treatment to free him from his addiction.
