If you're Jewish and you know it, light a Menorah. :)

I share Sarge's sentiments.
Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends on the forum (and any non-Jewish person that might happen to celebrate Hanukkah).

Happy Hanukkah to Magna and Soce, and anyone else who celebrates it on this forum. I'm sure that there are a few more...

Personally, I'm not religious (in fact, I'm a bit of an atheist, really.) However, I do believe that traditions that promote peace, sharing, and community are important in order for society as a whole to function well. Societies that promote hatred, isolation and greed tend toward violent self-destruction, and we all need less of that. So, if you associate Hanukkah with peace, then by all means celebrate Hanukkah!

So, perhaps some of you who are Jewsish can answer something for me: Does your Menorah hold six candles or seven? I've read about ones that have six and ones that have seven, the seventh one supposedly used to light the other six. What's yours like?

Ah, I get it. So, the regular Menorah has seven candles (or fires of some kind), not six. Here I thought the seventh one was just there to light th other six. Guess I confused the ordinary Menorah with the Chanukkiyah Menorah (also known as just a Chanukkiyah.) Well, you learn something everyday, huh?

So, it's not a Menorah that is lit during hanukkah but rather a Chanukkiyah, and the Chanukkiyah has eight fires with an optional ninth fire used to light the other eight. Right? Have it got it this time?

it's not really about peace, actually -- it celebrates a military victory.

Actually, Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple after the successful Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy. According to the Talmud, the victorious Jews found only enough ritually pure olive oil to light the menorah for one day, but the supply miraculously lasted eight days until a new supply could be obtained.

that's why it's celebrated for 8 days, but the real miracle was the fact that the Maccabees managed to defeat the vastly more powerful Hellenist Greeks in a violent uprising, and regained their political autonomy.
