PATRIOT ACT BAAAAAAWWW

I could care less about all this wiretapping stuff. I don't deal drugs, I'm not a murderer or a terrorist.

Which is probably the view of the lot of the people voting on it, but at the same time then why should we have it in the first place? Seriously, what value does it provide that can't be taken out of context?

I guess I don't mind it so much when it's used for covert operations, but sometimes I just think it does more harm then good. True masterminds speak in code anyway, and could just lead tappers to the wrong locations if they think they're being tapped. Seems like a waste of resources to have us chasing our tails.

And then there's the slippery slope of the thought that it then should be legal to do it in other situations, too.

The "I don't have anything to worry about so ok take all my civil liberties away to protect me from witches mr. government" mentality is exactly what leads to Orwellian society.

No, they'll tell you they're taking the potato to preserve your safety, or maybe say that anyone with a potato is a terrorist suspect and rendition you to some secret torture prison.

THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING FOR YOUR TUBER

I'll tell you the truth, Ninti. Everytime I read the subject line of this thread, I thought the exact same thing.

Exactly what civil liberties are "they" taking from us? The right to talk about planting bombs and killing civilians?
Seriously, what do you lose?
This is NOT the government telling us we can't talk bad about them. This is not losing the first or second amendment, not anywhere close. We could be approaching "unlawful search and seizure", but I doubt it. You have to be pretty far over the line to be monitored (or a Straight, White, Christian Male, aged 18-35... The one time affirmative action actually pulls us into something).

The Constitution guarantees your right to privacy, though. It's a necessary and important principle, at the most fundamental level.

Amendments 4 and 5 of The United States Bill Of Rights protect the right to be free of unwarranted and unwanted government intrusion into one's personal and private affairs, papers, and possessions. Article 12 of The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks."

That's for things like "unreasonable searches and seizures." I don't want the government spying on its people, but I don't think the Constitution specifically provides for a situation like this.

A situation like what?

We're not in a state of emergency like Faux News would like to have you believe.
