yeh, i just mentioned it in the how ya feelin thread.

to summarize, i vote yes. and i participate. not for any cause, however. i just think i can make people smile a bit by giving them a hug. not to mention it breaks down social barriers and stuff. plus its fun.

I love how everyone thinks this is a new concept...

I first saw this in 2000 at the Royal Adelaide Show. Two teenage guys with a little cardboard sign.

My boyfriend wouldn't let me have one... :(

Am I the only one who finds the whole free hugs concept kind of creepy? Perhaps it started off from sincere feeling, but it comes across as the sort of thing that would attract perverts en masse. "Touching up strangers...for peace!" I dunno, I think it rings hollow.

I think this is the exact sort of line of thinking that the ideal behind Free Hugs is supposed to eliminate. As I said in another thread, we've grown so detatched from one another, being bred in a society based on fears and doubts, that we have to question the motives behind someone wanting to do good things for the world. That's a really sad state of affairs, IMO.

Oh, giving someone a hug is not feeling up a stranger.

Now, "FREE GROPES", that's a different story. ;)

No one's motives are above question at any time, no matter how noble their stated aims. When dealing with strangers a certain amount of skepticism is healthy. I think it's only a matter of time before pickpockets or frotteurists take advantage of this fad, if they aren't already doing so. Hug strangers if you want, but keep your wallet out of reach.

I'm seriously considering setting up a Free Hugs booth next semester outside. Who wouldn't want a free hug from me?

Everyone wants a piece of the Rammy.

Free Hugs is something I would get into if it wouldn't get me mugged. See, I lived in a space-age narrow minded society called Los Angeles. In these parts, if you walked around holding a sign that said "Free Hugs", people would kill you. I'm not saying Free Hugs is a bad thing, I am 110 percent for it, just the guy I am, but I'm in LA, and if anyone here can attest(right context?), feel free.

Better known as Syracuse, NY.

Wherevertheheckyouare NY is out past Albany. It's basic geography, man.

But is it considered "healthy" because evil tendencies are inherent in mankind, or because of the negative society in which we have been raised?

I'm going to say the former, but I wouldn't call it "evil" exactly. It's pretty much the same thing you see in the natural world. The Law of the Wild dictates that if you have to suffer - or be killed (by me) - so that I can eat, so be it. So there's no shortage of people who'd be willing to exploit weaklings in the herd........ and by "weaklings", I do include people who are too trusting for their own good. The negative society is simply the response to that, imo.

---

Anyway, I think this "free hugs" business is pretty stupid. Have we all become so emotionally needy that we need hugs from people we don't know and otherwise care nothing about? I'm saving my hugging for people I do care about.

That's a very good point, WHF. A person might give me a random hug on the street, but if I don't know them, it will probably feel somewhat creepy.

On the other hand, I'm always up for a hug from a friend. :)

I reject both notions. Skepticism is healthy because there is never a shortage of exploitive people who are willing to take advantage of anyone they can, and who will happily use an altruistic cause as a smokescreen to get what they want. The users and takers have always been among us; a casual glance at history will show you that. You usually can't tell who these people are just by looking at them, so a degree of caution is wise.

You may see this answer as supporting the "inherent evil" option, but individual psychology is far more complex than that. What makes some people exploitive? It appears to differ, sometimes substantially, in every case.

Again, I'm not questioning the overall spirit of the free hugs fad. I imagine most of the participants are in it for positive reasons. I really don't see it changing the world, however...I think it's much more likely to be shanghaied by people who are in it for the wrong reasons.

OUCH!!! I'm of a like opinion, friends for hugs. I don't like it when people I don't know give me a hug. Creeps me out.

Me, I'm all for Free Hugs. I think it's cool.
We saw a Free Hugger in Germany. I gave him a hug, of course.

This is sorta what happened as the West Coast Creation Fest. It might have been related, but you could by shirts that said "Free Hugs" and because everyone we're friendly Christians, I saw a lot of strangers hugging.

I did this during the last week of school. Got everyone in the class (except that one girl who I just know has a crush on me) and about 100 other people in random corridors.

Also, on the hugs topic:

...and the last time I checked, this isn't 4Chan. Here, hugs are more than allowed, provided they are consensual.

Hey, since I'm now an adult, is it considered statutory rape to hug a minor, even with consent? ;)
