If Bush said that, then I say "WTF, GEORGE!?!?".

Until now, I'd never actually seen the quote. I thought it was one of those things that people just posted.
There's always the possibility that it was something taken out of context or a misquote.
According to this, Mahmoud Abbas says that Bush didn't say it.

Still, if nobody in the Bush administration hasn't refuted it, then there has to be a good reason why. One reason: They don't care because, even though he might not have said that, they support the spirit of what it said or think (for reasons only known to them) that it's a positive soundbite to have attributed to Bush. The Other: He actually said it.
I don't know. I wasn't there.

Yes, but StrongRad, you have to understand that this "quote" so perfectly fits into the picture Europeans and others have of Bush being a Certified Nutjob Christian Wacko that they desperately want to believe it.

I won't deny that, but you gotta admit that it seems fishy that nobody, I'm aware of, in the administration has denied it. Seems like, if someone had, it'd be front page news and be a top google result if you search for the "mission from God" quote.

And what makes the BBC less reliable than C-SPAN? Other than the fact that it employs Europeans.

It's not about reliability.

It's that if he said it on CSPAN, we'd have video evidence.

As it is, we have hearsay.

(But one thing I'll say here is that I don't personally think it's a big deal. I didn't actually think that he was referring to an actual Sit-Down-And-Have-An-Actual-Conversation-With-God situation, but rather that it was a metaphor. I was just using it as an example that he is an evangelical. Anyway.)
