Okay, I know this happened a while ago but I'd still like to bring something up about our planet. While I was on the subway this dude wearing a yankees cap starts eating on the train, something from dunkin' donuts or some other chain. I happen to see some crumbs falling on the floor and to my shock does NOTHING about it, not picking it up and I didn't think that he was planning to pick up the debris later. Finally I can't stand it and since I don't want new york to become a landfill I get a piece of paper and start picking up the crumbs. That buphead says "what're you doing?" and I respond politely my reasons for why I am on the floor of the one train picking up crumbs with my caring hands. Then he says "that's just sugar." like it's some excuse if the mess is miniscule do not pick it up. "It's crumbs you're littering." Then he starts being all stupid with his friends making remarks at what I said laughing at me and thinking that I am a complete dingus. They say I'm a bleep-bleepin' idiot behind my back and leave the train as soon as it reaches their desired stop. The group leaves and I am really steamed at this moment, I start recalling all the gum that got stuck to my bookbag, butt, feet or hands, people littering everywhere like they can't just walk a few steps to the nearest trashcan. It's kind of like second-hand smoke, I suffer because of someone else's poor desicions, do they have any regard for the people around them? The people that will have to sit there next or stand there next? In trash? Could someone please answer me this one simple little question. Why do people feel if the trash is unrecgonizable or just small feel it's okay to litter, that no one will notice it? Is that like an excuse, you can start littering if no-one else cares. How can you make that judgement without knowing everybody? People might have to be their next and stand in the mess the previous person leaves behind. If everyone throws the trash in the trash receptical everything's peachy, let one little piece of garbage stick to the floor that's a problem. So please give your thoughts on this, don't be shy to oppose against, but only if yhou feel that way, not for the sake of someone getting angry and providing some sick entertainment for you. So in the words of the fad...tell what you think.

This is just like your smoking thread, buhubs. Chill.

The thing about trash is, it eventually does get thrown away. You're overreacting.

I despise littering, but the fact of the matter is that people who do it are too stubborn to change their ways. If they're going to stop littering, they're going to have to make up their own darn mind to do it. I think it's better to avoid a confrontation than to get into one that 1) you're not going to win, and 2) could even cause trouble.

That's not to say that anything's wrong with advocating not littering, but chances are if somebody is insensitive enough to litter right in front of you, they're also not sensitive enough to give a crap what you say about it. Sad fact of life.

buhubs should be upset! It's sometimes ridiculous how some people think that their trash is no big deal. No busboy is going to go sweep up those crumbs on the subway before the next person sits down. They'll just stay there, being a degradation of aesthetics if nothing else. If those crumbs were tiny, yeah, not too big a deal, but if he was a slob and there were big chunks on the floor, I wouldn't want to squish my shoes in that when I sit down.

Oh, buhubs certainly has the right to be upset about it. I just don't think there's any point in getting confrontational about it. I'd be more inclined to quietly clean up after somebody while they're not looking, if possible.

BTW, buhubs, I don't want to be rude, but I find it difficult to read a long paragraph like that. I tend to skim over posts that are one solid block of text. Nothing personal, I just find it hard enough to read that I don't want to bother expending the effort.

From what I hear, it sounds like your getting upset over a sprinkling of sugar on the ground. If I'm wrong, then disregard this part of the post, but that doesn't really seem like it would be a problem. Like Bazooka said, though, if they were big chunks of food, I could understand, but that's not what it sounds like to me. Of course, that doesn't give those guys the right to do what they did, but I still stand by what I said.

I stand somewhere between freaking out and ignoring it.

I mean, it IS horrible that people have no respect for others. Like Kef said, though, people who don't care enough to try to be semi-clean aren't going to react positively to a "clean that up".

When my fiance was here over Christmas, we took long walks. The first 10 minutes of the first walk reminded me why I don't take walks around here. The area around here could be so beautiful if people weren't so freaking inconsiderate. Most of the trash on the side of the roads here is from people that live within 5 miles of where the trash is. Would it hurt them to wait til they get home? Apparently so.

I suppose what bothers me most is the "it's someone else's problem" attitude that people seem to take with litter and messes in general. I used to see that at WalMart all the time (and it annoyed me to no end). Little hint folks: Just because someone might get paid to clean up for you, doesn't mean they enjoy it.

No offense man, but your example seemed a bit extreme. A little bit of salt sprinkling from a pretzel isn't bad, but dropping the wrapper from said pretzel is a no no. Littering is bad yeah, but sometimes that stuff is expected to happen.

You don't understand it wasn't sugar, it was just his blindsided view of sugar they were like crumbs and I'm upset not just because it makes new york look like a trash hole, it's just, aren't people considerate anymore?

We need to start speaking Greek or something, 'cause I'm still confused about what you mean by "crumbs".

Since nobody got it yet:

It's "Kai su, teknon?" ("You too, my son?"), what Julius Caesar is supposed to have said to Brutus upon being stabbed. In his play, Shakespeare translated the phrase as "Et tu, Brute?" ("You too, Brutus?"; pronounced "broo-tay"), because just as Greek was understood by the elite in Rome, Latin was understood by the elite in England. Wikipedia has more, of course.

Are you entirely sure? Do you know what it does, it attracts vermin, it grows ripe with disease, it pollutes our water supply, innocent animals get trapped and poisoned in the waste that is not thrown out. Open containers can provide a breeding place for mosquitoes which have been known to spread disease like west nile and it occasionaly contributes to car accidents. And if you think that the world is always filled with people who like picking up after the inconsiderate ones, well, I'd check twice my dear gecko.

But it's not just "people who like picking up after the inconsiderate ones"...it's people employed by the city or private company that owns the land where the litter is--people employed to clean up messes, who get their meager wage by doing such a remedial task.

All this over some simple freaking crumbs...

Seriously, man, you're really going off the deep end here.

A couple crumbs << a bag of garbage.

Granted, if EVERYONE on the planet dropped 10 crumbs, there'd be a lot of crumbs all over the place, but one dude on the train is not everyone on the planet.

If I was in your position buhubs, I would've just ignored it, I mean all you really did was embarass yourself by picking up those crumbs...
Besides I'd worry more about bigger trash like coke cans and Mcdonalds burger packets, because they are more of a threat.

There are millions upon millions of mosquitoes in the world and more than enough places already for them to breed. It's not gonna make them more populous by given them more. The process goes through too many steps to contribute to any diseases transfered by insects.

And I agree with Sree here, overall you're overreacting. It's a few crumbs, it's not going to do anything. What's he supposed to do, eat the sandwich over a trashcan? That's not gonna happen

Besides, humans (and all animals) have left crumbs places all their lives. When we were cavemen, say, we would've left a lot of crumbs on the ground.

This isn't all about crumbs, it's about just the trash that's all over the place, and you know what, sometimes people employed by the city, guess what? Sometimes, they don't do their job, more than just sometimes even.

Dude, you are getting way too worked up over a few crumbs.

I am willing to bet you are not the most perfect eater yourself. Do you always pick up every single crumb you drop after you eat? I'm willing to bet not, and if you do, then no offense but I suggest getting help. You might be obsessed with cleaning.

This was probably stated, but this is just like your smoking rant. People are far too set in their ways to change, especially from seeing a topic on a cartoon forum written by someone they don't know about changing.

Well, the thing is, even if the employees don't do their job, its not like the train is suddenly going to be infested with rats or something (if you live in NYC they probably already are :P). And the thing is, it was CRUMBS. If you're gonna worry, worry about picking up bigger crap like massive abandoned landfills or something, not crumbs.

I used to be a stickler about littering....but now I've come to the sad realization that everything else will end up in a landfill, taking up just as much space as the littered trash, for eternity. Granted, littering is still bad, but I'm more concerned about why I see trash cans on the corner but no recycle bins (they do it in Europe, the U.S. needs to shape up) or why I see water bottles or aluminum cans in said trash can. Or why I can't recycle gift wrap or ziplock bags.

Well, according to a certain program on Showtime hosted by Penn & Teller, our current methods of recycling use so much energy in the process that it's actually MORE harmful to the environment than just throwing stuff away...save for aluminum cans. Those are still good to recycle.

Well then I suppose we need to put more money into alternate energy. God....I hate it when everything's screwed up.
