So after watching movies like "What the Bleep Do We Know?!" and "Mindwalk," I wanted to know what people here thought, if anything, about how the developments in physics (namely quantum physics, quantum mechanics, string theory, systems theory, and the like) over the past 60 years or so has affected people's perception of spirituality and living. Films such as the ones I listed and related books such as "The Tao of Physics" by Fritjof Capra (also author of the book from which "Mindwalk" was derived) essentially try to tie together the revelations of higher dimensions (string theory) and interdepency among units (systems theory) into defining the way we live, not only secularly, but sometimes spiritually. I'm not sure what to think of all this, honestly--it's intriguing, and the physics is definately interesting to study, but I sometimes feel that a lot of the messages contained in pieces like "What the Bleep Do We Know?!" can essentially be boiled down to little greater than those self-help books that spout over-simplified "answers" dressed in simple optimism. Now of course, I'm not saying optimism itself is necessarily bad...but is there any truth to the social and spiritual claims made by people involved in these films and books?

I don't know those books or films you've mentioned, but I think I know the kind you mean. I do think that this is the era of empirical thinking as opposed to introspective spirituality, and science is certainly part of that. But it's not the whole reason, imo. A lack of spirituality could just as easily be attributed to disillusionment with the process, the obsession with material attainment that's pushed the need for spirituality aside, or just a realisation (rightly or wrongly) that spirituality isn't important and doesn't offer any real benefits.

Me - I'd be the first to admit that I'm not spiritual at all. And yeah, it's probably because I'm an empiricist to a large extent...... but I also don't really care about having any kind of spiritual growth. It's just not something that I'd call important.
