Displace Me

Is anybody else attending their local Discplace me event?

If you haven't heard about it, here's the text from the site:

What is a displaced camp?

The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has abducted thousands of children, subjected them to torture or sexual violence and forced them to fight in a violent guerilla army for 21 years—making it the longest running war in Africa. In hopes of providing protection from this rebel militia, the Ugandan government forcibly evicted its Northern citizens from their homes—giving them 48 hours to relocate into camps. Today, more than 1.5 million Northern Ugandans remain far from secure, suffering nearly 1,000 deaths per week due to inhumane living conditions in the camps.

Alcoholism, sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS, inadequate sanitation and lack of education have caused immeasurable damage to two generations and the near-total destruction of Acholi culture. Water is scarce and people are reliant on food to be delivered by foreign aid. If the food isn’t delivered, the people starve. This April, the already meager rations delivered by the World Food Program to the camps will be cut in half due to lack of funding—with school feeding programs and support for HIV/aids victims soon to follow. This will indisputably increase the number of deaths among those already suffering from severe malnutrition—mostly among women, children and the elderly. That is why the timing of this event, and your participation are so crucial.

“Displace Me” is the nationwide event giving Americans the chance to respond.

By traveling to one of our 15 camps and gathering together, the strength of our size will make a visible statement to our government and media that the citizens of the U.S. demand action in ending the war in Northern Uganda, in order to send the Acholi people suffering in the camps and the abducted children back home. The point is to travel; the point is to become displaced yourself.

Saturday, April 28, 2007 say “Displace Me” and leave your homes to bring them home.

Basically: a bunch of people make cardboard tents and eat only saltines and 1.5 lit. of water at designated times for a night to raise awareness for the suffering in Uganda.

I saw that video a week ago in school. Loved it. I wish I could do that Displace me thing, but I'd get really far behind in schoolwork. I'm a senior in high school. :(

But major props to ANYONE who does it.

NYC is just a bit too far for me to make. alas. it really seems like Portland would get in on something like this, too.

The point is to travel. There's only 15 cities where the event is taking place. The point is to be displaced; just leave everything behind and go there with some water and saltines. That's why they don't have it in every city; they want people to travel.

I would if I could. :(

We saw the movie at my school, too...I got a T-shirt...

It really is terrible, how they're doing this to innocent kids. I can't imagine how much it must suck to be them.

That's a HUGE understatement. This goes beyond "sucking".

Okay, so then...To prove point to our government, the people doing this have to sleep in a cardboard tent, eat crackers, and drink very little water to live like those people in Uganda...For one night?

I don't think that's going to prove a point to anyone other than the people doing it. Its a good cause, none the less, but from what it seems like,(I clicked and read the website), its just a bunch of Hippies gathering together to eat less than they allready do, and drink less water. Hippies, and a bunch of kids from Churches or parents who forced them to do it to teach them a lesson.

The cause is good, but it seems like it could/would be poorly executed.

I mean, if the government does listen to this, (Which I highly doubt), all they can say is "Hey, give those people more food and water, and set them free", without getting involved in the war going on over there.

It can go two ways: 1) The government doesn't listen/care, and a bunch of hippies and kids just starved themselves for a day.
2)The government listens, tries to intervene, and gets involved in the war, like 'Nam and Korea. In before "omg, ur so kruel n <3less" and standard Pointing-out-of-the-flaws-of-my-statements.

That was very rude of you, Cola. Especially your use of the word "hippies" in spite of the fact that it's a good cause.

Yeah, we did too. A bunch of people I know are going to the one in Chicago, but I'm not. I have to be home that weekend.

Now, see, if they were to do this for a week or two, then it would send a message. If they do it for just one day, then its basically an overpriced camping trip.Overpriced as in paying for plane tickets/Gas/food/cardboard boxes, etc, etc.

So get off your high-horse, put on an old t-shirt and pants, and go eat less for a day!

And afterwards, indulge in food, you will gain back the weight and more.

I would get really far behind in my schoolwork if I did. I'm trying to graduate on time. But at least I don't call the people who do choose to do it "Hippies".

The more people that attend, the larger impact it will make. If they did a whole-week thing, they would hardly get anyone. If it's on a weekend, people don't even need to take off work/school.

The last time they did this, they actually did spread out into more cities, but they figured it would be better to have fewer, much larger ones. This one is going to be a ton bigger and hopefully will have a much bigger impact.

I call everyone who acts out and protests Hippies. You aren't going to make a difference with Peaceful Gatherings and Civil-Disobedience, you gotta go in with Guns and a banner that screams "HEY! Pay attention to me, I have guns and I have a cause!"

So, then, by your logic, Louis Farrakhan is a hippie. The Million Mom March participants were hippies. The Sons of Liberty were hippies.

Wow.

You do know that protest is a basic American right, correct? Then are all Americans hippies?

Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King would like to have a word with you.

It's quite unfortunate that this is going to make zero difference in the world.

Well, geez, what prompted you guys to poop in the punch bowl?

While you're probably right that this won't make much difference, surely you could, at least, acknowledge that there's no harm in trying. Even the largest avalanche starts with a single snowflake.

I'm guessing it'll at least affect the thousands participating, and maybe it'll make the national news for a day.
