I think this is my favorite quote from the FAQ. Quote: The stars are about as far as San Francisco is from Boston

![]() I firmly believe this is satire. I can't imagine someone actually believing this wacky theory. |

I can certainly believe that somebody does. Not everybody there, but somebody. The point I really wanted to establish was that it's possible to argue your way out of virtually anything if you really want to, and the site is very good at that whether or not it is satire. - Kef |

Anyone who's ever read Terry Pratchett's Discworld series would recognize that reference. |

Not quite. The concept of it being carried by elephants is, as is the concept of it being carried on a turtle; however, the concept of it being carried by elephants who are, in turn, being carried by a turtle is, as far as I know, unique to Discworld. |

Reliance on unfalsifiable "evidence," refusal to accept scientific fact, gross displays of ignorance... Man, am I the only one reminded of New Earth Creationism? On the plus side, on of their lackeys managed to make a pretty cool picture |

Hey now Backwards, let's keep the finger pointing to a minimum/not at all. Fair debate isn't immediately shooting down someone just because you disagree with them. |

Almost. Debate is arguing with someone of differing opinions with the hopes to convince them that your stance is correct. What he did was "Haha, these guys sound like young earth creationists: they're both idiots!" and in our book, this falls under bigotry (with respect to the creationists). Even so, it's not furthering the conversation at all. |

If my post was bigoted with respect to creationists, I fail to see how all these previous posts have not been bigoted with respect the Flat Earth Society. Seeing as how this entire thread ultimately exists only to mock the society, I really don't think your accusation is justified. Furrykef brought up the site to demonstrate how bizarre beliefs can survive despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I merely pointed out a rather glaring similarity between the two ideologies. |

No, the thread exists to-- well, wait, you answered yourself here:Quote: Furrykef brought up the site to demonstrate how bizarre beliefs can survive despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Quote: I merely pointed out a rather glaring similarity between the two ideologies. Well, there isn't. The Flat Earth idea can be quite easily disproved, but Creationism, the belief that God created the universe, can't. Even if you can prove that Evolution is possible, you still don't do much to disprove Creationism.

Note that I specified Young/New Earth Creationism. I agree that the Creationist debate is largely irresolvable; however, the belief that the Earth is less that 10,000 years old is unequivocally false, much like the notion that the Earth is flat. My original point stands that these both these beliefs exist despite concrete evidence that proves them wrong. |

Take it up in the Creationism vs Evolution thread, seriously. It's a topic that is under serious debate, unlike this one. But really, can you talk about nothing except for "Creationism is so dumb and stupid" in every single post you make? |

Actually, there is an Indian creation myth that has the elephants standing on a turtle. I just read a passage from John Locke that referenced it. |
