I hope they don't charge this kid with anything. It's bad enough for him knowing how much damage he caused.

He should've known enough to play with matches with older kids. They know how and when to play with matches.

The "BIG" fire wasn't started by this kid, though.
Still it's bad enough.

I never got "playing with matches" anyway. I always knew what I was doing.

Perhaps his parents should be charged with crappy parenting. I distinctly remember getting the "If you start a forest fire, I will kill you" talk.

I don't think his parents should be charged for bad parenting. Everyone knows not to play with matches, but breaking the rules is half the fun. It's not like this kids parents handed him a couple boxs and told him to go find somewhere nice and dry.

Yeah. I believe that parents should be held accountable at times, but from what I've seen so far, this isnt one of those cases.

My parents always told me not to fool around with matches when I was young, but I was just fooling around with road flares yesterday. And those are basically uber-matches.

If I started a fire that killed/destroyed stuff, I wouldnt want my parents to held accountable.

The parents shouldn't be held accountable for his actions on this one. Telling a kid to do something is easy, having them actually do it isn't.

Then either one of two things needs to start taking place:

1. Parents need to exercise more control over their children, and actually make them do what is right (and the government needs to support them and encourage them in that).

2. The kids themselves need to be held responsible for their actions.

Otherwise, we end up with a society where anything goes, and no one is held accountable for anything.

People keep going "the parents should be punished because they are terrible", but, you know, parents can't watch a kid 24/7, especially as he gets older. Sure, they probably told him not to play with matches, but when you get older you start to get into that "rebellious" phase and want to do whatever they tell you not to.

I agree. If they should charge anyone, they might want to charge the kid. It's not really the parent's faults that he was playing with matches unless they let him. He could have snuck them out in his pocket or found them outside. Still.

Of course they should charge the kid! Even if he's not an adult, he's still at an age at which he should know not to play with matches.

Exactly. If he's younger than preteen, maybe they could let him off, but he's apparently preteen, and when you're the age he is, you've gotten the "if you play with matches I will freaking KILL YOU ON THE SPOT" lecture more than twice. More than thrice.

Toastpaint was a term coined by older admin AgentSeethroo. It might have actually been InterruptorJones but thid information was presented to Noid when he was a n00b and Noid thought they were the same people so his memory is foggy.

It's a tough question... I believe the kid should be held responsible for what he did, accident or not. Parents can't be punished for everything their kids do... unless there is strong evidence the parents taught their kids wrong values (like that arson is cool).
